Milano – San Remo
ProTour Monument

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/pt/pt_srm.png

The first MG ProTour Monument of the season, and we head to northern Italy for the Primavera – the Milano-San Remo. Just under 300km in length, it is one of, if not maybe it is, the longest race on the calendar.

The Favourite – Sprinters

Usually seen as a Sprinter’s Classic, many teams have brought their big named fast men here to contest the finish. Sam Bewley, John Degenkolb and Alexander Kristoff will all be present on the start list, along with Intercontinental Champion Ben Swift, Romanian Champion Eduard Grosu and Michael Van Stayen. Local hopes will fall to Jacopo Guarnieri and Davide Appollonio, who will be hoping to emulate the likes of Ricco and Pozzato by taking an Italian victory on the finish in San Remo.

So who else should we not rule out contesting the sprint at the finish? Jurgen Roelandts is currently one, and so is Jens Keukeleire. Both can sprint with the big names, but both have the ability to get themselves over the Cipressa and Poggio with enough in the legs to challenge. Arnaud Demare and Marko Kump also easily fall into this category.

I have just mentioned the Cipressa and the Poggio, and they are for good reason. Either of these can be the perfect Launchpad for a puncheur who doesn’t want to take Bewley, Degenkolb et al. to the line. Edvald Boasson Hagen, Simon Ponzi and Jan Bakelandts are the clear names who might be able to do such a thing, but I wouldn’t count out Yuri Trofimov, Francesco Ginanni and Jack Bobridge. All are top riders in the Ardennes Classics, and also capable of looking after themselves in a small bunch sprint.

Recent Tour de San Luis winner Rui Costa showed good form to take a stage win, in addition to the GC, so will be a threat, whilst Peter Sagan is a very nice back up for Becherovka – Petrof to have, should Bewley struggle over the final climbs. Sean De Bie will be leading the line for Aegon, with Davide Villella as a Super Domestique / Plan B for the team. This seems to be a similar tactic for Vesuvio, who have Frank Schleck to back up Plan A in Ben Gastauer and Nick Van der Lijke.

Nice preview, thanks the_hoyle!
Marcel Wyss enjoyed racing here until 2013 and had good results. So we'll watch out for the Swiss champions jersey.
Route may be a little too long for Appollonio, though we expect him to invest a lot to stay in touch with the favourites.

Difficult race to predict although it could suit Lutsenko. Still, got to be Bewley, doesn't it?

cio93
Our best lineup of the season.
We have Ciolek for an easy race, obviously Demare and also Felline for a somewhat tough race, Kelderman for a really tough race and Blythe for the traditional mid-stage cobbler attacks.

Which probably means we'll fail. Frown This could be everything from a win to a big disappointment.

Heine
This is prolly the race you have the best odds for "another rider", so many riders that can win it

I hope for a strong flat rider doing a Ballan style win

roturn
Swift if it`s an easy race. Normally he should at least get a top10 here even if some hill sprinters make it harder in the end.

De Bie for a big selection could deliver here with an attack.

Villella and Sbaragli as wildcards depending on the race itself.

So I hope for a decent race. Winning will be hard seeing the list of winners being the Demare, Van Staeyen, Van Avermaet kind of riders. But 1 in top5-10 and 1-2 in top20-30 would be nice.

I must rely on easy race only Smile

After terrible showing in both T-A and P-N I lost my faith and don't expect anything big from my team. Especially with such incredibly strong field here. Let's hope AI won't fucked up first monument and we can watch exciting race (tbh I doubt Pfft)

Race of the year for me and I sent everything I have. Huge expectations with guys like Van Stayen and Greg and terrific support so basically, I can only get disappointed Pfft
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

It will be interesting to see if stamina comes into play with the one race that it really should do. Bewley is favourite in this sort of race but as we see often the hills can break things up in PCM.

Dan Holloway did creditably last year but I worry that the improved field here this time will put him toward the back of the AI possibles - MvS, Swift and Bewbastard all will look to podium.

Newton to win from the breakaway to ruin all your dreams.

No expectations here, just one of those races that I don't have the right type of leader to do well in. Will be cheering on former cyclist Costa. Smile

Another one of those where my team only scores for finishing the race.

This is one hell of a stacked peleton, going to be interesting to see what way the AI wants to take the race today. I have always loved racing it in PCM myself since it can be such a diverse race.

Will be happy if Costa or Kump tries something in the finale here. Cool

My guess is Bewley starts sprinting too early and a rider like MVS wins this. Pfft

Great preview.

Last year Ginanni was part of the Pokerstars machine working to control this race, now he's free to attack. Sure hope he does! The AI putting Furdi at the top of my lineup instead of Ginanni is a bit worrying.

I have to be realistic; the chance of us scoring well here is not very big.

Wouldn't be surprised if it gets too tough for Guarnieri and Rowe, but not tough enough that Trentin and Meyer can shine. Hope that somebody can get a top 10, but not really expecting it.

Have a strange feeling that Ignatiev will win this.

The previous seasons it has worked well to have EBH together with a sprinter here, with both getting nice placings. I really hope that continues, or at least that they cover different scenarios. It would after all be great to see EBH try his luck with an attack, admitedly it's unlikely having Kristoff as a teammate, but hopefully he'll at least follow attacks from others.

Eventhough the startlist is amazing, I hope we can pull through and grab a top 5 with either Kristoff or EBH, depending on the race.

In my book Bewley is the favourite, and he must fancy his chances to become the first ever rider to win it twice in a row.

Very nice preview, the_hoyle!

Can't really see us being involved in the end here unless Houle manages a top result but he would need to be on a good day possible Boivon may go top 15 if he is lucky
