Well, these aren't huge things. In a lot of cases military organizations already had these.
Wearable tech, like glasses with a HUD?
Sure - this exists.
Facial recognition? Yep
Some might argue some militaries already had this technology in 1989 to some extent.
3D Films are a big thing? Yep
This is not really a knew thing at all and has gotten trendy at times since the 50's, in fact some might argue the trend is currently dying.
Ridiculous sequals? Yep
I'm not sure this is a new thing either, but maybe.
Microwave meals? Yep (this was a big predicition people don't realise)
If you consider a frozen dish you heat up the same as a cookie sized thing turning into a pizza in seconds, ok.
Cosmetic surgery becoming mainstream and available to all? Yep
Mainstream maybe - available to all and insanely widespread, not really
Multi channel TV screens? Yep
Sure
Smart Homes? Yep
Yes but still not common.
Everyday fingerprint locks? Yep
Yes, but that's been in the works for a while.
Video calls? Yep
IDK about other countries but the US military has had that for decades. It's recently hit mainstream but the basic tech isn't new.
The basis of Back to the Future and most depictions of future in media is that they show advancements and ideas that already exist, in more advanced or "futuristic" forms. Sometimes these things already exist, just not to the consumer market. But of course the people at the time the movie is made cannot comprehend an idea that is completely new in the future, let alone come up with it.

Ok, Facial recognition thats available to the public and is integrated into wearable tech? Yep
3D Films are a big thing? Yep

3D existed in the 50's but it was not a big thing nor as well developed as it is now. Only in the last 6-7 years has 3D really exploded and become a mainstay of the film industry. Whether it's dying or not is irrelevant, it's a big deal right now, so B2TF 2 got that one right.
Ridiculous sequals? Yep
I'm not sure this is a new thing either, but maybe.
Ok the Jaws 19 was a direct pop at the way the Jaws Franchise went with Jaws 3-D and Jaws The Revenge. But it's no less true that the film industry is infatuated with the idea of making franchises and churning out endless sequals regardless of quality. I'll give theis one the film purely because the idea has grown a lot more recently
Microwave meals? Yep (this was a big predicition people don't realise)
If you consider a frozen dish you heat up the same as a cookie sized thing turning into a pizza in seconds, ok.
Ok the Pizza was rehyradtion and not Microwaving. I won't give credit to rehydrating but the development and expanions of Ready Meals/TV Meals through the 90's and up to now has been extreme in comparision to the time.
Cosmetic surgery becoming mainstream and available to all? Yep
Mainstream maybe - available to all and insanely widespread, not really
And water isn't available to all either, it's all relative. But in the UK with our reasonable and sensible healthcare system you can get plastic surgery subsidised (can be 100% covered) by the government. I'd say that is a big deal, and just the other day i saw the first Plastic Surgery commercial on TV in the UK. Certainly it's pretty much at the level it was portrayed in the film.
Video calls? Yep
IDK about other countries but the US military has had that for decades. It's recently hit mainstream but the basic tech isn't new.
Skype came to being in 2003 and really that is what was portrayed in the film.
The Military had working jetpacks in the early 1960's, certain sectors always have things decades ahead of the public but we're talking about a depiction in a film of everyday life. So whilst some tech would have been in use in 1989 the jump from then to now is pretty goddamn significant and a lot of what was predicted has become reality.
Hoverboards do exist, sort of. But only in an early experimental phase and far from being widely available, hence why i wont say B2TF 2 predicted hoverboards correctly for 2015.
And for a film that wasn't billed as a hyper realistic sci-fi, it's a family comedy-adventure, the level of accuracy is actually really impressive.

There's actually an Aussie rapper who made a whole song about this, and it became pretty popular too. Interestingly, he then got the chance to ask one of the country's most respected "celebrity" scientists (yes I use that term loosely) if it was possible. The short answer IIRC was yes, but it's not really possible to get a proper hoverboard to work without either 1) a lot of magnetic fields/anti-gravity technology buried undergorund or 2) harnessing the force equivalent to a high-powered machine gun to keep the board off the ground.
Just thought I'd add that to the discussion

Ok, Facial recognition thats available to the public and is integrated into wearable tech? Yep
Alright.
3D existed in the 50's but it was not a big thing nor as well developed as it is now. Only in the last 6-7 years has 3D really exploded and become a mainstay of the film industry. Whether it's dying or not is irrelevant, it's a big deal right now, so B2TF 2 got that one right.
If it's dying or not is entirely relevant to whether something is a "mainstay," and the fact that this same technology has repeatedly gotten popular and died out is also relevant. So this isn't much of a prediction.
Ok the Jaws 19 was a direct pop at the way the Jaws Franchise went with Jaws 3-D and Jaws The Revenge. But it's no less true that the film industry is infatuated with the idea of making franchises and churning out endless sequals regardless of quality. Absolutely true of course that the film industry is this way. Maybe they saw it was starting to happen in 1989 and thought it would get worse?
Ok the Pizza was rehyradtion and not Microwaving. I won't give credit to rehydrating but the development and expanions of Ready Meals/TV Meals through the 90's and up to now has been extreme in comparision to the time.
While that is true, I still think it's a stretch to compare that to the rehydration scene in the movie.
But in the UK with our reasonable and sensible healthcare system you can get plastic surgery subsidised (can be 100% covered) by the government.
In my opinion, paying taxes to the government so other people can have usually petty cosmetic surgeries is not reasonable and sensible
Skype came to being in 2003 and really that is what was portrayed in the film.
Which is just a smaller scale, mainstream version of old technology.
My point is that the existence of this tech in military sectors is entirely relevant. It has happened time and time again that these things get developed in military type sectors and eventually make it to the mainstream. It isn't a bold or crazy thing to predict that they will in fact eventually be streamlined for the general public, as it's just an advancement of what already exists, while thinking of new things that could possibly exist is almost impossible, as you can see by the fact that BTTF barely got any of these things right and a lot wrong. But as you said, why would anyone expect them to? It's a family comedy, not a research study,

@bbl: Not quoting everything here, but about cosmetic surgerys. Do you know that the majority of theese surgerys is for people, who get burn damage on their skin or for people who look pretty damaged after an accident.

I absolutely understand that sometimes plastic surgeries are pretty much necessary. But that doesn't make the other cases not matter.

But I guess the other cases, don't get paid by the country. Normally the people who want a surgery for beauty and/or fun have to pay them themselves.

That's not how TMM made it sound. Also isn't it possible Britain and Germany have different laws?

You do raise a point there BBL. B2TF 2 is set in the US, so comparisions should be based on the USA Today (cheap plug for the newspaper) so you could discount the plastic surgery, it just depends on what your personal interpretation is.

Dear PCMdaily members,
Here’s a speech for you.
As you probably noticed, I haven’t been around for a while. From about the start of August I decided to take a break from PCMdaily. There were multiple causes for that, but the main one was simply a lack of motivation. That has been lingering for a long time, perhaps actually from Summer 2014.
Perhaps you noticed that my activity decreased in 2015 anyway. It never really reached late-2013 or 2014 levels, that’s because my motivation simply was lower than ever.
Often I found my motivation back, but at some point it was really over. To add on that, I started university around the time I took a break from PCMdaily. Despite not even having moved out (yet), my life kind of changed around. As a result, my free time is limited and I was not motivated to spend any of the limited time on PCMdaily related stuff.
So does this speech mean that I’m back? I’m afraid it doesn’t. I actually only planned to take a break of a few weeks, but well, it got much longer than that. The motivation never came back, and I only got busier and busier time wise as well.
I didn’t want to just slowly disappear without telling anyone about it, like some other members have done, so that’s why I’m writing this sort-of-speech.
It is not a final goodbye, but it is at least an indication that you will not likely see the ‘’old Jesleyh’’ back any time soon. I gave up my admin position today(regardless of what you might think, I have actually been somewhat useful as an admin ) and will give up my MG team as well. Obviously with the current amount of activity it cannot be justified to keep my MG team alive(and they sucked anyway ) . I had already left the DB team for a while, although I made a quick return when my help was needed. The DB motivation has been low for a while though.
All this doesn’t mean I love the site less though. It is simply a great site and I made a lot of friends here and had a lot of nice discussions and all. Obviously there have been a few downsides as well, (most notably probably the ‘’privacy issues’’I had at some point here,) which also impacted some of the motivation, but well, it is absolutely not the reason I’m leaving. As said I really enjoyed my stay on this site. I’d not only say it helped me with my English, I’d even say it helped me develop as a person.
Anyway, I’m moving to the next phase in life. Studying(some international economics/management programme if you wondered), moving out(near future), working more, those sort of things. PCMdaily does just not fit in currently, and probably will not for a while.
My motivation has been shifting back to football rather than cycling anyway. Actually, I think it has always been football above cycling, but for a couple years it was very close to each other. Right now I mostly just feel a Feyenoord fan. They are going to win the Eredivisie this year btw
(I’m not really a Dutch national team fan atm, with the current coach, his player selections and the boring style it’s like I’m watching some Amsterdam club play…)
My PCM motivation has also decreased a lot. Not really due to changes to the game actually, I really think the game got better in the years I played it, nah, it’s just me. I think I actually enjoyed PCM 12 the most, at the time I wasn’t so busy with databases and stuff.
Anyway I do rarely even play PCM 15, haven’t put a lot of playing hours into it, even though I actually contributed a lot to developing the game with loads of testing. Or at least I feel like I contributed
I do still watch cycling though, cheered on Tom Dumoulin like a madman during the Vuelta and obviously keeping a close eye on the performances of Wilco. Just think of me when you see Kelderman turning out to be a star, which I still believe he will.
I could make a list of people I want to ‘’thank’’ for my great time on PCM.daily, but I feel like I’d only forget names. It’d involve most active members of the past years anyway. There are a few members in particular that I value the most, and I still regularly talk outside of Daily with most of those. They know who they are anyway.
If for some reason you need me or want to talk with me, I’m still available at Skype. Username is jesleyh, of course.
Just don’t try to force me back to Daily, I already feel guilty enough for leaving you , although I doubt I’m irreplaceable, haha.
See you later lads,
Jesleyh
Feyenoord(football) and Kelderman fanboy

How do you fill out the end of Pedro, call Jesleyh!
Our little Kelderman fanboy is growing up into a slightly older Kelderman fanboy, brings a tear to the eye.
I'll always remember the numerous times i helped prevent his beloved Wilco from joining him in a Story Game, the numerous times. Becoming Admins at the same time (last man standing of that induction, mwahaha). Hours of pointless jokes and chat in Skype, mostly about how Feyenoord sucks.
Adios me amigo. You'll finally win an award but can never claim it

Thanks for all you've done on the site, I think I only even found the site because of a post by you. But yeah, I remember all the contributions you would make to the site.
Thanks and see you soon I hope.
Now we just need to find a way to name the next Café Pedro after Kelderman.
