Tour of the Battenkill - Preview
Welcome to New York!
Well, kinda...
We have 175 riders representing 23 different teams on the start line in Schuylerville, a rather small place just north of Albany which lies about 3 hours drive north of The Big Apple.
Although the finish line is actually only 10 miles away from the start, race organisers have taken a slightly long-winded route which takes the riders a total of 218.6km over a number of tough cobblestone sections and hills which will test the pavé specialists.
We've had 3 different winners of this race in the last 3 years and it would have been 3 completely different podiums if not for Wisniowski who won last year and took 3rd in 2019. We see a mixture here of pure cobblestone specialists and those strong over the hills such as Theuns or Gerts so it's risky to pick a favourite.
| Winner | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | | 2021 | Wisniowski | Debesay | Kasperkiewicz | Gerts | Per | | 2020 | Summerhill | Altur | Blythe | David | Debesay | | 2019 | Bewley | Theuns | Wisniowski | Gerts | Vanspeybrouck |
But pick a favourite we must! It's hard to look past last year's winner, Lukasz Wisniowski. He's the strongest pure cobblestone rider, he can navigate a hill and he's got a punchy finish also.
The previously mentioned Floris Gerts will also be one to watch. He's taken 4th here twice in the last 3 years but will be hoping he can at least make it onto the podium this time around.
Edward Theuns is another who will be hoping to go 1 better than he did in 2019 when he finished 2nd to the legendary Sam Bewley.
Another key rider to watch, who doesn't have history here, is Matteo Trentin. He's more than capable over a hill and in a reduced sprint so we'll see whether he can mix it with the best.
Other riders to keep a special eye on include the aggressive yet fast finishing Pedersen, former podium man Blythe as well as the Tinkoff duo of Senechal and Kamyshev.
But, with such a variation of skill sets across many strong riders, we're just as likely to see a surprise so here are the riders we think you should look out for.

A podium must be the minimum here, seeing the startlist. We shall hope for his first win this season!
Obviously looking forward to the race. Pedersen is probably the favourite, seeing his season, but we shall try! |

Praying for a top 10 from Daniel. Expecting Wisni to win it all. Thanks for the preview!

The recent races lifted a lot of pressure of our team so Polanc can race without expectations now

Trentin's last hoorah. PTHC field insane as always. We'll Do what we can. A good result here would be huge for us. I'm always skeptical at how much Trentin's hill helps him in these races though, given his low mtn. We shall see.
Thanks for the preview!

Benoot just about making it into the preview but we hope that the hills help him out and we can have a repeat of Cheshire or get close. We have a Top 10 goal in this race, so will be happy with a 10th place tbh.
Thanks for the preview LLS

We only have done this race 3 times, 2018 Senechal 10th, 2019 Sulimov 10th and last year Senechal rode a really aggressive race (attacking twice), but again a disappointing 8th place. Hopefully we can do better this year, good luck to all!

This one will probably be hard for Teunissen, but we'll see.

Well that was a disappointment. The race that could send us down.
Gerts getting worst results with 82 cobbles than with 81.

Looked very good for a while there for Daniel, cannot be unhappy about placing three riders in the top 20. Expected win for Wisni, thanks for a great report LLS!

Fantastic race for us. Trentin seemed to be missing all the moves, but he never faltered energy wise and had plenty in the tank to overtake others in the final stretch. 4th place and best of the PCT teams is huge for us given the precarious nature of our standings position. Aside from a couple of notable duds, Trentin has been Mr. Consistent this year when it comes to these 3rd-5th place finishes. Doing it at the PTHC level is even more crucial. We also got a decent bunch of depth points due to Mestric, Girmay, and Lander staying near the front with him most of the day. Very happy to score over 100 here.
Thanks for the report and congrats to ember!

There it is! Wisniowski's first win for us
Really thought it wasn't to be, first when the Pedersen group got away relatively early in the final, and then when they caught him with 1,5 kilometers left. Super impressive by him to still have something left and claim the victory! Very happy with that
Thank you for the report, LLS! |

Four points from the final two possible positions, guess that was the maximum to achieve. Thanks for the report LLS and congrats ember!

Benoot didn't have the legs today and that's our first goal missed this season. On to the next one then.
Congrats to ember and thanks for the report
