The race report will be brought to you by AbhishekLFC!
It's late spring, and that means it's time for another PT flat classic. This time it's Rund um Köln, a 200 km trek around the German city of Cologne. It's got some bumps along the way that can wear out the field, but it almost always goes to a sprinter or a flat beast attacker. That was the case last season, when Soren Kragh Andersen soared to victory from a late flyer.
| FL | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | Coquard | 73 | 67 | 71 | 74 | 84 | 83 | Gaviria | 76 | 72 | 74 | 76 | 83 | 84 | Ewan | 75 | 71 | 73 | 71 | 83 | 81 | Grosu | 73 | 73 | 74 | 70 | 83 | 80 | Demare | 73 | 80 | 75 | 72 | 82 | 81 | Groenewegen | 73 | 67 | 74 | 71 | 82 | 81 | Van der Lijke | 73 | 76 | 73 | 71 | 82 | 79 | Lo Cicero | 70 | 62 | 68 | 60 | 82 | 75 | Manninen | 74 | 66 | 71 | 75 | 81 | 80 | Samolenkov | 74 | 64 | 75 | 71 | 81 | 79 | Vesely | 73 | 68 | 74 | 68 | 81 | 80 | Van Stayen | 73 | 76 | 71 | 66 | 81 | 73 | Cullaigh | 74 | 66 | 73 | 70 | 80 | 81 | Hsu | 75 | 67 | 75 | 70 | 80 | 79 |
It's a PT classic with no clashes, so almost every PT sprinter is here. That means the startlist is insanely deep, with competitive riders stretching well beyond the above table. Invariably, not every team leader will actually be able to make it into the final sprint.
On paper, this should be a showdown between Bryan Coquard and Fernando Gaviria, who are the strongest pure sprinters of the bunch. Gaviria is the stronger rider overall and shouldn't care too much about the earlier bumps, but Coquard has the better top speed and an actual leadout man in Bouglas, which is something Gaviria lacks. Isostar never fail to have tricks up their sleeve though.
Caleb Ewan has unsurprisingly had a nice resurgence so far at sprinter haven ISA-Hexacta. He's as fast as Gaviria, and has several great leadout riders, including Contreras. Grosu has a similar makeup, but not as much firepower with him. That hasn't stopped him from winning earlier this year.
Arnaud Demare is a stud, but he'll be wishing the route was a little heavier on hills. He'll be a bit fresher than the pure sprinters, but probably not much. Thus, a guy like Groenewegen, who's by far a weaker rider overall, may be the Frenchman's equal in a full mass sprint.
We should never forget Manninen when talking about top favorites. In a pure speed trial, he can't match the best. But he has a real knack for putting himself in the perfect position and outlasting his rivals with great resistance, so he manages to overperform time and time again.
A million sprinters could win this race, so it will likely be a matter of positioning above all.
| FL | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | FG | Andersen | 81 | 65 | 77 | 78 | 76 | 74 | 72 | Manamalage | 81 | 59 | 71 | 64 | 57 | 56 | 64 | Cherkasov | 80 | 71 | 72 | 74 | 70 | 75 | 65 | Konychev | 80 | 66 | 76 | 76 | 74 | 73 | 76 | Brockhoff | 79 | 70 | 74 | 76 | 62 | 73 | 64 | Mundle | 79 | 65 | 69 | 73 | 59 | 69 | 80 | Peak | 78 | 69 | 72 | 75 | 76 | 76 | 64 | Nych | 78 | 67 | 75 | 72 | 65 | 76 | 84 | Antonijevic | 78 | 66 | 67 | 74 | 71 | 74 | 80 | Rickaert | 78 | 69 | 75 | 75 | 75 | 73 | 67 | Hansen | 77 | 65 | 74 | 73 | 73 | 80 | 72 | Summerhill | 77 | 72 | 75 | 71 | 69 | 72 | 80 |
It's hard to say exactly what makes a rider a favorite to win from a late attack. Generally, power on the flats is most important. Also important are energy reserves, acceleration strength, and a decent enough sprint to win from a small group. Over the past few seasons Soren Kragh Andersen has been the epitome of that kind of attacker, as he showed in his win here last year. He's back again for more.
Ultimately though, who attacks, and whether they succeed, will depend entirely on the particulars of the day. There are plenty of candidates for an attack victory if they have good legs and pick their spot correctly. There are also plenty of reasons the peloton may be able to shut them down. We'll have to see how it plays out.

We won't score, but it won't stop us from participating in the sprint or attacking late

A flat classic without Pedersen ... We decided to send him to Arenberg, so hopefully some of the others can grab the chance in his absence. Thanks for the preview, bbl!

A rare chance in a flat classic for Kragh to be the clear leader, usually he has Wisniowski for company, but not here due to the clash with Arenberg. Kragh has indeed made dangerous attacks in such races his trademark, fingers crossed he goes for it again, and is strong enough to stay away and not be caught! |

Not looking forward to races where Van Stayen is our leader really. Interested to know which sprinter gets the better of his rivals though.

Quickly sliding into the relegation zone with bad results, so hopefully today's the day where Manninen gives us another boost. If somebody is able to do it, it's him. Thanks for the preview bbl

It feels like a win just to see Grosu getting involved. Hopefully there will be more of this in what's left of his races.

Weird race. Why we drop Peak as our only rider is beyond anything understandable, he should've been our last leadout man. Still we have 6 fit riders at the end, and could've prepared a very effective train with f.e. Cherkasov and Rickaert. Instead we position ourselves not smart enough and fail to contest for the win. SotD this time unlucky going very high risk with his train and going bust late, a shame to see. Congrats though to the podium 2, Puma really pushing it these days.

Very good try from Konychev! Just a pity Kragh wasn’t able to profit from it and give himself a good position for the sprint, and launching when Konychev was caught.
Coquard moving very early obviously didn’t help Konychev, but maybe he felt forced to due to his gap. A pity for SotD, who obviously lost out on a good result after solid work from his team.
Congratulations to the winner, and thank you for the report. |

Oh man, that was a bad one. Thanks for the commiserations though. When having such a great chance to have his best ever season, it does hurt to see him mess up like that. Especially when Koretzky is having a very bad season.
Let's hope the Vuelta can be better than the other races this month, otherwise we are looking at 2 consequtive bad months - on months that wasn't supposed to be that bad.

Very good final few meters from Vesely, might have been a huge result with better positioning but it's a good omen for races to come.
Thanks for the report Abhi and congrats Scorchio!

You are absolutely right AbhishekLFC, very unhappy with this result. Samolenkov being dropped with 30 kilometers to go killed our chances on a good result, better luck next time.

Seems like the Matti Magic has worn off a bit. Being in the second group for a while couldn't have been good news for his chances. Great win for ISA - Hexacta.
Thank you for the great report, Abhi!
