GP Liechtenstein
We at Ivaneurope Sports Network apologize for the sloppy production of this preview. We're terribly sorry and we can assure you that the people that brought you this preview will not receive Christmas bonuses. Nah, just kidding. Onwards with the Preview, which was indeed combed together at the final possible moment, but a preview notheless. Enjoy.
The 11th edition of the Liechtenstein GP brings back the WorldTour riders to one of Europe's smallest countries. Clashing with the Giro d'Italia, GP Liechtenstein will feature riders who were not selected to race in Italy, but that does not mean that the quality of the start list for this one-day rave would be of lesser quality compared to its 21-day Italian counterpart and will feature some of the top climbers the WT teams has to offer.
The route is pretty straight-forward and has not been changed during its entire history - nearly 240 km of climbing and downhilling with the final climb being the most gruelling of them all. One mistake or overspending energy early on and your chances might go to dust, so your position is quite important.
Unfortunately none of the recent winners here is returning once again, but that doesn't mean that the quality of the startlist is low - not by a long shot. There are riders who are still looking to win this race and now the opportunity for them is higher than ever before. So, who are the favorites then:
Name | MO | HI | ST | RS | AC | Phinney | 85 | 77 | 77 | 74 | 75 | Herklotz | 84 | 81 | 79 | 80 | 76 | Kudus | 84 | 77 | 79 | 77 | 70 | Tenorio | 83 | 75 | 77 | 75 | 66 | Wellens | 82 | 75 | 79 | 80 | 68 | Latour | 81 | 75 | 80 | 78 | 74 | Olivier | 81 | 76 | 76 | 80 | 71 | Carthy | 81 | 75 | 77 | 76 | 69 | Godoy | 81 | 76 | 75 | 76 | 75 | Pinot | 80 | 74 | 76 | 79 | 69 |
While the most recent back-to-back winner Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier was not sent to compete there, Phinney appears as the bookmakers' top pick for the win based on his climbing skills alone. He has competed there in the past, finishing 6th last year. Tenorio, the runner-up from the same race also returns with the hopes to win it all. Herklotz, who was 5th in 2020 is also returning with the same goal and compared to Phinney and others on this list his Hill stat is by far one of the most superior. Kudus has better Stamina and Resistance stats, compared to others, but his acceleration is not that great and could be decisive if others decide to attack. Other riders that have been placed as one of the Top 10 favorites are the likes of Wellens, Latour, Olivier, Carthy, Godoy and Pinot. Of course there are other riders like Schelling, Yates, Lopez, Formolo, Higuita and Sosa who didn't make the list, but they could be considered a hidden favorites who if they stay at the front an opportunity can open.
And here are the full list of riders ready to tackle the Alps
And we're ending this preview by handing the reporting duties to Imladrik. Thank you and Happy Holidays from IESN.

Wellens plus Oliver.
Obviously a bit of hope.
Top 5+ another high finisher is what I would like. First did well so far, hopefully has a good day. |

One of the few times this year we get to see Phinney vs. Herklotz, I am just going to sit back and enjoy the fireworks.

Indeed, we are hoping from a good understanding between our two mountain goats, as this is the race where we will get to see whether Zepuntke's mountain training will pay off. Thanks for the preview Ivan.

I don't really know what to expect from Chiarello here. Apparently atleast 10 guys on paper stronger, but it wouldn't be out of the question to beat Pinot, and maybe Olivier if he's on helping duties. So an outside shot for a top 10 I guess - but probably more realistic somewhere in the region of top 15.
We need a good day from him to start clawing back some of the lost from previous bad racing, and a very uneventful (for us) Giro so far. But Chiarello not even making the "hidden favorite list" is ill warning I suppose.
I'll be interested in seeing how Spanopoulos does here also, as this could well be a decider in terms of wanting or not wanting to further train him in the next off season. 77/75 should be a decent top 25-30 stat, but he won't claw anything back in the descents unfortunately.

I hope Sosa can fight for a top 10/15 other than that the team I have here is really not suited for this kind of race. Thanks for the preview! |

Lopez here as our leader, not really sure how much i can expect from him. Sth like a 6th or 7th place would be great to get but it's gonna be challenging to get there...
Behind him my lineup is looking quite empty. One classics specialist, one prologue specialist who cant climb and then its a bunch of lvl1 and lvl 2 riders to fill the lineup hopefully finishing the race.
Very happy to see the epic duel of Phinney vs Herklotz here (though it was kinda assured 1,5 weeks ago...)
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Strong team with Higuita for Phinney here, but we have a bad track record at the race so almost skipped it. Normally I expect a win when Phinney is on the start, this time we might take advantage of the weak startlist and Higuita as the wingman to get 2nd behind allmighty Herklotz (possibly ICL-biased prediction, but still)

As always very low expectations in this race. First race for APP after a little break. Hope he at least can show our colors a bit.
Should be a great fight for the win. My money is on Herklotz!

What a brutal race! Watching people get dropped on the first of 12/13 climbs is just unimaginable. Over 8 hours in the saddle must also be an absolute grind, no matter how much is decent recovery.
Really didn't think that we'd see a group head to the finish line together, but very strong results from all the top 4. Congrats to the winners and those teams who earned much needed points! |

We did what we could here, representet in the breakaway and getting just a top 20 with Preidler.
I will struggle to be active this Christmas period, but will of course try to be as updated as possible on the races and the results. |

Wild to see Latour hanging with the Top 3 and even beating Kudus. Really impressive. In general it was cool to see riders being distanced but coming back again with changing racing situations, not just simply one rider being dropped then the next. And Imladrik captured that well with the report! Lastly, congrats to Phinney and croatia, of course!

Guess the bookies were correct to put Phinney and Herkoltz as the two favorites.

Wasn't expecting Formolo to do any miracles here, but I also wasn't expecting him to be outside the top 20.

I enjoyed reading the race report this year. Proper two way battle between Phinney and Herklotz while especially Lopez played the jester and animated the race in not exactly the smartest way possible. Still, got the solid result i was hoping for so i'm perfectly fine with this race.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Carthy coming home in 30th was certainly not what I was expecting in one of his few chances of true leadership this year, massively disappointing considering the start list. :/

Another dissapointing race. Spanopoulos was fine, but the difference between him and Chiarello shouldn’t be negligable.
Strong win for Isostar. Again ;-)
