Tour of Tasmania Discussion
Tour of Tasmania

Hello and welcome from Down Under to the start of the 2022 PT ManGame season. After some eventful months, we’re finally back to racing and just like last year, we’re kicking things off with a neat little stage race, the Tour of Tasmania.

The race is about as varied as you can manage to fit into just three days: one for the sprinters, one for the puncheurs, one for the time trialists, with the GC going to the man who can combine the latter two aspects the best. Let’s see who that could be:

Top Favorites
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Phinney738577837475
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen737875817572
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio678375797566
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Mano717275797366
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier718575788074

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Phinney has won both of the previous editions, which have been ridden on the same course as this year’s. He’s the runaway favorite, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen were just 16 and 22 seconds away last year, respectively. And the Luxembourgian has been training hard in the offseason.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Mano is at least a podium contender in his first maxed year, and you can pencil him in as white jersey winner already. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier finished 7th here last year, but like Wirtgen, he’s hit the wind tunnel since then and even if he’s the worst time trialist of this quintet, he’s a force to be reckoned with.

A whole lot of very strong time trialists come to contend the final stage, and some of the decent uphill riders might feel slighted to not be included in the top favorites list. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Ganna has perhaps the strongest case, given he’s the best puncheur in the group and an elite time trialist. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Würtz won the time trial here last year, but having lost a good chunk of time in the hills, it was only enough for 13th in the GC. He’s coming back even stronger though and has a chance to improve, for sure.

Other time trialists who somewhat know their way up a hill include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Mullen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Lammertink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Oliveira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Fraile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Razumov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/fpc.png Cataford, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Keizer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Pelikan, but they’ll have to have a really good day to not lose too much on stage 2, still.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Zmorka and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Vlatos, meanwhile, are probably looking at stage 3 only, but they’re definitely among the absolute top favorites for it, next to the already mentioned Phinney, Würtz and perhaps Mullen and Wirtgen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png De Bie718472767275
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Sagan748368747376
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko738368737281
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Mohoric718364726777
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Skujins708359776876
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Bobridge688276736879
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Gidich768273776275
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Vakoc718169717174

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Prevar718062706773
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda757775737073

Some of the best puncheurs of the division are here to fight for the win on day 2, and in select cases perhaps look at the GC as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png De Bie is the top favorite for the stage, perhaps alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko, and if that stage ends up being highly selective, he could be one of those to end up well-placed in the GC with his okay-ish TT.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Bobridge - 4th two years ago - and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Izagirre are the strongest time trialists of this group, and the most likely GC contenders as a result. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Gidich might fancy his chances as well - he already finished 5th here last year.

In contrast, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Mohoric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Skujins and the rest of the guys on the list are here for the stage and the stage only. Finally, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda is not necessarily a top puncheur, but given he finished 4th in the GC last year, he deserves a mention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard7384837174
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Grosu7383807470

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov7481797571
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Moser7280797369
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Appollonio7380766964
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/fpc.png Kamberaj7579787373
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Riabushenko7679777174
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas7278787267
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Groves7378777372
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van der Kooij7378777574
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski7478777473
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann7277807571
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Thijssen7377797269

We should not forget that the race starts with a sprint stage, which means a sprinter will get a day in yellow, likely a very high rank in the points classification and a good points haul as a result. Not enough to entice a whole lot of elite sprinters to come, though, so we have a pretty clear favorite: ELCO - ABEA’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard, who won the opening stage here twice before, last year and in 2019, and could provide the rebranded project a flying start. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas, he has a very nice leadout.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Grosu - who brings pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van der Kooij as support - and the aging pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb are very firmly the French’s main challengers. Then it’s a significant drop to the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Moser, and we’ll have to see how much pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Appollonio can do with their significantly regressed acceleration and resistances.

Then we have guys like multiple Tour de France stage winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/fpc.png Kamberaj, Popo4Ever duo pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Riabushenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Aniolkowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Groves, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Thijssen, and finally pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann, who could play a role in the points classification given that he’s potentially in the mix on both of the first stages.

Hopefully, some fun racing is ahead of us in this first PT stage race of the year. For a full startlist, look below.

While De Bie needs a really selective stage 2 , Goos could perform decent here in case of smaller time gaps there. Surprised he got no mention at all when hopefully be able to beat the low 70s time trialists sure to enough selection on the hill.
I don't really know what to hope for here. We have a long list of riders with a decent MO/HI/TT combination, but neither are top 20 favorites (Chiarello, Giannoutsos, Ioannidis, Kiriakidis and Spanopoulos). I guess we can hope that 1-2 of them just punches above their weight to offer us some GC points. Ideally ofcourse Giannoutsos and Kiriakidis who are both U25 riders.

Coquard as the main favorite usually turns out bad, but we have to keep our hopes and expectations up. If he can't perform a good result in a race like this we are likely in a very bad position at the end of the season. I don't expect him to just beat the likes of Grosu and Degenkolb, but there will be no excuse for not making the top 3.
Go Phinney! Very important race for us right from the start.

Great to get things started, and nice to already see a Phinney - PHL clash right from the gun Grin
But it would be great to have the top puncheurs gain some time on stage 2, to have an actual shot at top GC positions. Would be nice if the race wasn't decided already by the end of day 2.

Good luck to all you PT managers for this race and the entire season - may the games begin Smile
And obviously thanks to cunego for the PT kickoff Smile
Every Lecuisinier race day will be super important for us this year so i want him to start on a high here. Phinney will be hard to beat but I'm hoping for a podium.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Looking forward to the season kicking off. Always an interesting race with the mixed parcour across the varied 3 stages. Last season ISA - Hexacta secured a good points haul at this event - a repeat would be more than welcome, but there was quite a bit of good fortune involved that is unlikely to align quite as well again. Very strong start list with so many GC heavy-weight riders in attendance as well as the elite puncheurs.

Best of luck to all the PT managers for the season ahead. May the PCM AI gods bestow us with high quality racing and not too many duds!

Thanks for the great preview! Looking forward to the start of our PT campaign. Feels weird not having a sprinter in a race for the first time in for ever, but at least we have a small chance of finishing high in the time trial stage. Also no Kelderman here, so hoping Keizer holds on as long as possible on the second stage for a possible top-10 GC in the end. Good luck to everyone, and I must say it feels a bit weird seeing that yellow microjersey in front of Lecuisinier's name Pfft

Think we have a strong team here. Will be a quite new team, with six riders making their debut for the team. Hopefully they will contribute to some depth scoring. The big goal will of course be the TT. Would have liked it to be longer, but fingers crossed for Mads!

Thanks for the preview, looking forward to the start!
These 3 stage PT startlists sure do hit different

Got some expectations for this race. It suits Bobridge very well and we have a few aussies in the squad so they should be motivated as well!

0 expectations here in our first wildcard race for the season. Riabushenko may show himself, and with some luck Pluchkin may be in for a half decent GC.

First race of the year! Coming in with low expectations, we only got 10th last time we were here due to a breakaway. Start list is really tough as well so we are relying on Fraile to survive stage 2 and hope for the best really and we still have the likes of Hayter, Oliveira and Pidcock to provide depth points and breaks as well.

Hard to bet against Phinney as per usual but good luck to the others!

Excited for the first PHL days for Evonik Grin And also Pidcock's PT debut, will be following him closely this season obviously and as ryant says hope he can do some scoring and attacking!

Very excited to be part of the PT again! Curious to see how Mohoric makes use of his race days, fingers crossed he can fight for the stage win. Regarding the GC, we can’t hope for much. If Foss doesn’t loose much on the hills, he could challenge for the podium regarding the white jersey.

Looking forward to this! Cool to have both PHL and Phinney here, maybe their only clash for the white season?
Nice start by Lo Cicero, thats are the places (and the points) what we expect from him Smile Congrats to the winner and thanks for the report.
Happy with the stage. Havik tried to get in the break and Thijssen competed in the sprint finish. Thats what i want to see. Getting white for a day is a nice bonus.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

My team was pretty anonymous here in the opener when they probably could have joined the break.
But De Bie and Goos not losing time was most important even though the late finish position of De Bie is a bit worrying. Definitely needs to be in a better position tomorrow in the final.

Weird stage here with some puncheurs going for the break. And a surprising winner in Moser, congrats SN, while Coquard as often has to settle with 2nd.
Onto the next race
Had a slight hope of seeing Kragh attack late, but also cool to see him do that well in the sprint.

Also nice to see Bravo try for the breakaway. Please try again on the next stage!Pfft
