Welcome to the 15th edition of the Deutschland Tour. Over the last few years this has become a stage race for time-trial specialists. There is a 26.5 km flat TT on stage 3 that decides the race. Either side of that are two sprint stages. So apart from the time-trial specialists we have some of the best sprinters here.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | TT | RS | AC | PR | | FL | TT | RS | AC | PR | Zmorka | 74 | 82 | 75 | 70 | 82 | Fiedler | 76 | 80 | 71 | 58 | 79 | Würtz | 77 | 82 | 78 | 70 | 79 | Mullen | 75 | 80 | 74 | 70 | 78 | Durbridge | 73 | 81 | 74 | 64 | 81 | Viviani | 78 | 79 | 77 | 70 | 79 | Vlatos | 72 | 81 | 71 | 66 | 81 | Fraile | 69 | 79 | 76 | 66 | 79 | Howson | 71 | 80 | 74 | 68 | 80 | Tanfield | 73 | 79 | 75 | 72 | 79 | Wirtgen | 73 | 80 | 75 | 72 | 80 | Coppel | 73 | 79 | 72 | 68 | 79 | Kittel | 74 | 80 | 69 | 72 | 80 | Zakarin | 74 | 79 | 70 | 70 | 79 | Viennet | 72 | 80 | 75 | 64 | 80 | Goldstein | 74 | 79 | 72 | 61 | 79 | Sütterlin | 71 | 80 | 77 | 60 | 80 | Dal Col | 71 | 79 | 72 | 70 | 78 | Yatsevich | 70 | 80 | 81 | 63 | 80 | Vorobev | 75 | 79 | 71 | 72 | 78 |
No Taylor Phinney here this year, but defending champion Mads Würtz will still have his work cut out for him. Zmorka is the best PCT has to offer and has all the capabilities of winning this race. Durbridge and Vlatos are also by no means outsiders and will be looking to win this race. Following them is a long list of 80 TT riders that could fight for a podium spot on a good day. Given the depth of the field it can't be helped that a few will come away disappointed.
| Sprinter | FL | RS | SP | AC | Lead out | FL | RS | SP | AC | Coquard | 73 | 74 | 84 | 83 | Farantakis | 72 | 70 | 78 | 78 | Kennaugh | 77 | 71 | 82 | 81 | Venturini | 75 | 74 | 75 | 77 | Manninen | 74 | 75 | 81 | 80 | Ruiz | 74 | 68 | 71 | 72 | Silvestre | 78 | 71 | 80 | 81 | El Sabbahi | 73 | 72 | 73 | 73 | Cullaigh | 73 | 70 | 80 | 81 | Hennessy | 69 | 68 | 73 | 73 | Demare | 73 | 72 | 82 | 81 | Aregger | 73 | 71 | 78 | 77 | Bonifazio | 79 | 75 | 80 | 80 | Mareczko | 74 | 73 | 78 | 77 | Samolenkov | 74 | 71 | 81 | 79 | Banaszek | 72 | 72 | 77 | 79 | Vesely | 73 | 68 | 81 | 80 | Hodeg | 72 | 74 | 79 | 78 | Zabel | 74 | 70 | 81 | 79 | Haller | 72 | 71 | 80 | 79 | Van der Sande | 75 | 73 | 79 | 79 | Havik | 73 | 68 | 79 | 76 | Itami | 74 | 66 | 79 | 81 | Nizzolo | 73 | 67 | 80 | 79 |
The sprinting field offers similar depth of quality. Coquard stands out, but can they finally get his train together and win like they should. Kennaugh has found a rich vein of form in the recent classics, can he carry that over here? Manninen is always a threat to beat the best sprinters. Silvestre has cooled off a bit from his blazing start, but is still a danger. Add in great sprinters like Cullaigh, Demare, Bonifazio the list goes on and on. The finishes of flat stages should be very competitive.

This is a big one for us. Fiedler has been really inconsistent, so anything from Top 5-10 to outside of the Top 25 is in play. And of course Silvestre has to step up again after a string of unconvincing performances. With his decent 73 TT, he may even have a shot at climbing the GC a bit if he collects a decent amount of bonus seconds - 26km is not that long of a TT after all. But I might be completely off here. We'll see. Thanks for the preview red, looking forward to the reports!

This good be a good race for our team, but both sprint and time trial stages are hard to predict this season; fingers crossed!

Vesely seems to be in the sweetspot regarding sprints, so I expect great things from him. Not from the others in terms of the GC.

Kraftwerk's home race and we are hoping Kittel can get the fans cheering with a good day on the pan flat TT course.
This is the only race to feature Zabel, Haller and Willwohl in the sprints but given a good leadout is the kiss of death I have zero expectations of success.
Thanks for the preview red.

The absence of Phinney probably makes Würtz the bookies favourite, and if he can deliver as he did in Herbiers, he should have very good chances. That being said, we have a shorter TT now and Zmorka is also showing some flying form. This should be a fun one!

Hope Manninen performs better in the sprints here than in the HC/C1 stage races. Top-3 for Zmorka should be doable and is our goal.
Thanks for the preview, red. Looking forward to the reports.

Yeah we're not back to defend our title due to race day constraints. Still wish you lot a great race!

Good sprint by Manninen. Nice start for us with a second place, no shame in losing to Coquard. Congratulations SotD. I might be more thrilled to see Ruiz in second U25 though, scoring one point. Happier about that point from our self-developed youngster than the Manninen result, so maybe that tells me something about the direction I will have to take the team next year. Goodbye Matti, goodbye Marlen?
Thanks for the report, red!

That came as a pleasant surprise to say the least. Coquards only 3rd stagewin of the year in his 32nd attempt. Most stages in his calender suits him very well, so to win 10% is extremely low. Fortunately the ones he does win amount to a rather large points haul. Stage 1 in both Tasmania and Deutschland to pick up bonus points from GC and points, and the final stage in Qatar to win the GC.
If the theory is correct this means that he won't participate on stage 2 though, which hopefully doesn't mean that Vlatos drops from the pack. Ideally Vlatos will help Coquard find his position, so he himself stay with the peloton.
Thanks for the congrats Nemo, and thanks for the preview and report!

Mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, Mugisha is in the polkadots and 4th is a solid sprint result for Silvestre. On the other hand, had Mugisha not fallen behind the pack, he would have taken white as well, with a good chance to keep it at least another day. And 4th does not give bonus seconds. But I'm probably getting greedy here. Ideally, Mugisha goes into the break again to defend his jersey, and maybe Silvestre can do one better tomorrow. Thanks for preview and report, and congrats SotD for the stage win!

If it isn't a botched leadout it's a puncture which ruins Vesely...

Another very pleasant surprise. This one even bigger than the first… Farantakis is on fire. First a stagewin in Slovenie and then two perfect leadouts. And Coquard for once living up to the favorite role.
I wonder how I Can be 2nd to last in the Team GC though with 2/2 stagewins and good Stage results from Farantakis and Vlatos too, but I guess it will be the TT that determines that in the end.
I always hate to see a Stage favorite drop, but also some very interesting TT depth potential aswell as the team GC was thrown away which seems a bit silly AI wise. I mean, Demare can live with losing 1/4 chances for a stagewin, but the GC can’t be recovered… Atleast Ganna and Sütterlin wasn’t affected. That would have been devastating.

At least in PCM18, team classifications were never calculated correctly with s.t. teams, and I guess this still wasn't fixed. They are right after the first stage, but after this no-one knows what logic PCM applies. The points calculation tool calculates the correct outcome based on stage ranks, though. But as there are no points for intermediate standings in the team classification, reporters mostly don't compute it after every stage.
By the way, congrats on those two great Coquard wins! He's definitely on track for his target season points now - and probably more! According to the "yellow jersey curse theory", he just isn't considered to be a GC favorite, so he did sprint - which is definitely great news for you And nice to see your leadout working, too!

Fantastic to see a favourite sprinter with a leadout winning stages, all is not lost
Zabel not inspired by being on home soil and no sign of my leadout men, only favourites are given that "privilege" I guess.
Thanks for the reports red.

Beautiful stuff by Moise Mugisha to solidify the mountain jersey and, looking at the remaining stages, perhaps clutch it already! Would be the second mountain jersey after Samuel Mugisha's at the Tour de Vineyards, absolutely lovely to see our Rwandan youngsters prove their value already.
Silvestre is just a bit too far behind in the build-up to the sprints recently. He just needs to be closer to make use of his motor. Still two more stages for him to at least get a podium, which would be nice. Now onto the TT, hopefully Fiedler has a good day. If he manages a Top 10 finish, the race will already be a success for us and the pressure would be off of Silvestre.
Congrats SotD, looks like the team is really eager to compensate for the lack of stage wins at the Tour And this is indeed another indication that a stage that makes sprinters not the GC favorites lifts the "curse".
Thank you for the nice reports red as always
