Tour de Suisse - Preview
The World Tour Peloton was most recently seen last month at la Vuelta a Espana and they have only 2 races prior to the start of le Tour de France in July. The first of these is the Tour de Suisse. 9 days of some very testing riding which offers a bit for everyone.
The Prologue specialists will have the chance to claim the first leaders jersey on Stage 1.
Stages 2, 4 and 5 are the best opportunities available to the sprinters who have made the journey here.
Stages 3 and 6 favour the Puncheurs who will need to gain time on these 2 stages if they want a chance of a good GC result.
And of course, we have 2 Mountain heavy stages late in the Tour which will provide a very physical challenge. These stages are likely to be 2 of the most decisive.
Our 9 days in Switzerland come to an end with an unforgiving Time Trial. It is difficult to know at this stage whether the more punchy climbers will prevail rather than the pure climbers but there is no doubt that having a strong ability against the clock will help propel the riders up the GC standings.
There is definitely one man to beat here and that is Rein Taaramäe. High off of an historic success at the Vuelta for Evonik, the Estonian will be hoping to keep the good form coming.
Another man who had a good Vuelta, finishing 5th, is Jack Haig who will be hoping he comes out on top here.
Cattaneo is as strong a climber and TT rider as the two already mentioned but he has a noticeable weakness in the hills so he'll need to limit his losses there.
Choi is a strong all-round rider and will be hoping to go for a Top 5 or better here. Roglic is a similar rider but not as strong all around.
Finally, the trio of Carthy, Godoy and Berhane are all strong climbers and capable enough in the hills but they are all equally as bad as each other against the clock so they will need to gain serious time as their GC hopes will suffer on the final day.
| | | MO | HIL | TT | PRO | | Rein | Taaramäe | 83 | 76 | 79 | 77 | | Jack | Haig | 82 | 74 | 77 | 77 | | Mattia | Cattaneo | 82 | 70 | 79 | 79 | | Ki Ho | Choi | 81 | 74 | 75 | 74 | | Primoz | Roglic | 80 | 76 | 72 | 70 | | Hugh | Carthy | 81 | 75 | 67 | 65 | | Caio | Godoy | 81 | 76 | 67 | 67 | | Natnael | Berhane | 81 | 75 | 66 | 65 |
We do have a number of riders here or will be hoping for a stage win on one of the stages which suits them. The top guys here are the likes of Moscon and Van Niekerk who was a stage winner here last year.
Sepulveda will have hopes of holding the Leaders jersey at some point early on but, given his team has a GC Leader, I wouldn't expect to see him too high up after 9 days.
| | | MO | HIL | TT | ACC | PRO | | Gianni | Moscon | 73 | 79 | 66 | 73 | 70 | | Joni | Kanerva | 64 | 79 | 70 | 76 | 70 | | Aidan | Van Niekerk | 74 | 78 | 65 | 74 | 65 | | Martins | Blums | 77 | 77 | 68 | 70 | 71 | | Ruben | Guerreiro | 76 | 77 | 62 | 72 | 62 | | Eduardo | Sepulveda | 75 | 77 | 75 | 73 | 76 | | Jan | Tratnik | 73 | 77 | 62 | 70 | 62 | | Sarawut | Sirironnachai | 66 | 77 | 65 | 73 | 65 | | Roman | Senyenov | 62 | 77 | 63 | 73 | 63 |
Given there are a few chances here for them, we do have a few decent sprinters here. Maye of them will be hoping to be in the GC lead after the first sprint stage as they have strong enough ability against the clock over a short distance. Those riders include Enger, Boudat and Aregger.
| | | HIL | SPR | ACC | PRO | | Sondre Holst | Enger | 69 | 81 | 78 | 77 | | Danny | Van Poppel | 64 | 81 | 78 | 72 | | Gabriel | Cullaigh | 66 | 80 | 81 | 67 | | Hugo | Houle | 75 | 79 | 78 | 69 | | Thomas | Boudat | 68 | 79 | 78 | 78 | | Grzegorz | Stepniak | 67 | 79 | 79 | 73 | | Mark | Cavendish | 61 | 79 | 75 | 72 | | Marcel | Aregger | 71 | 78 | 77 | 78 | | Emerson | Santos | 64 | 78 | 78 | 74 |
The opener here in Switzerland will most definitely be hotly contested, that is for sure! It seems that the best prologue riders in the World are here to have the opportunity to claim the GC leaders jersey for at least 1 stage, if not more.

Can`t ask for any more than a top20 and active riding really.
Carboni has proven to be a decent GT rider due to the length and KoM hunts. Not so much a 1-week performer.
De Kleijn might surprise here and there in the hillier sprints but other than that can`t really see me scoring a lot. |

Oh wow, what an outstandingly perfect startlist for me
Was hoping for the clashes with Java and Dauphine to lure most contenders elsewhere but this startlist is just the best case scenario.
Taaramäe must be considered the top favourite here for the GC and each of the final three stages so plenty of points might be possible. Haig and Cattaneo the other big contenders.
Rest of the team consists of my two prologue specialists Chavanne and Stoltz plus all the climbers who cant do any TTing which means his Vuelta lieutenants are with him once again. One less climber in the lineup than in Spain but 78-77-76-75-75 should still be strong enough to set him up for the finishes and on first glance it looks better than what Haig/Cattaneo have so chances are we might be able to isolate our rivals as Vosekalns / Blums did at times at the Vuelta.
But since all TTers will be in France, Taaramae is the only 70+ TT guy in our lineup so we likely won't have any shot at the team classification.
Thanks for the preview!

Now I really relly miss Roglic and Novak. This is an insanely weak startlist. And an awesome preview!

I hope to see David de la Cruz inside the top 10 here, but there's a lot of riders fighting for those spots of 8-15...
Vlatos is my hope for the opener, but he's not the top favorite. Would be nice to see Kopfauf taking a good result ideally a day in the U25 jersey.
van Niekerk is hopefully free to attack a lot and he need to show himself soon. It has been one big dissapointment all season long.

Would love some hard racing on the bumpy stages to favour Houle but otherwise hoping from decent stage results from him, breakaway activity from Higuita and a good prologue from Schomber.
Love this startlist for Rein! I guess every startlist here is dissapointing since that ridiculous Pluchkin-Taaramae-Madrazo-Schleck-Amador-Dombrowski-Kritskiy-Herklotz-Morton (four 85s, five 84s, one 83 and also five 81s) one a few years ago

Quite a weak startlist. Hope Roglic can make use of that!
Other than that fingers crossed for Leung to get a favorable dice roll at the prologue and also Dion Smith can be a factor. |

Congrats tasta, always love a good SKA victory
I'm happy with the performance of Taaramae. 3s behind Haig and 6s ahead of Cattaneo is a perfectly fine result.

Close-ish but no cigar. Can’t really complain about losing to a better rider though, and 33 points is still a very good start towards reaching the goal for the race.
Congrats on the SKA win!

Decent ride from De Bod in the prologue, but he's some training away from being able to compete for more than top 10s in this kind of field.
Now to see whether we go for the break or put faith in Bol to compete in the sprint. His support stats should make him relatively competitive looking at the field here, but as with Cort Nielsen for the GC (where a top 10 may possible) the worry is the AI sees him as too weak to properly compete. |

Thanks guys! SKA really smashed that prologue! Cool to see him do so well in a bit longer prologue as well. And Larsen also very well up there.
Both Suisse and Dauphiné will be races with anonymous GC results for us, so this stage was really the chance to get a good amount of points in the bank. Hopefully we can defend the jersey for a stage or two!

Brought out the big guns for one of if the last race of the season here for us in the Pro Tour. Obviously not favourites but some stage results would be nice!

Absolutely no expectations for the flat stages so its nice to see Chavanne trying to contest the sprint. Unfortunately this ended being one of those weird sprints where one meter is the difference between a podium and a no score. But i'm fine and am waiting for the Taaramania to properly restart again

Kragh was coming fast there at the end! Good result and another day in the jersey(s). A hilly rated stage today, but think it's possible for Kragh to stay with the peloton. Fingers crossed.

After a disastrous season by Aidan he pulls something like thus from up his sleeve. Absolutely amazing win.
And also nice to finally get a stagewin again. We haven’t won one since Lecuisinier took the first mountainstage in Colombia.
And on a day where Lecuisinier explicitly proves to be a worse rider than Herklotz and Phinney, that atleast is a soothing take.
