Rund um Koln - Preview
The Pro Tour comes out of the Ardennes and heads to Germany before hitting Spain for La Vuelta. Here in Cologne, there is a 204.5km circuit through the town and over the hills which should favour the Sprinters.
The last 2 editions of this race have come down to a Sprint between the best of the Pro Tour. The winners of 2020 and 2019 are not here in 2021 but all of our other 4 riders who have been on the Podium here in the last 2 years are here to go one step further and end this one on the Top Step.
| 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 2020 | Kennaugh | Coquard | Degenkolb | 2019 | Kristoff | Groenewegen | Grosu |
The top favourite tag here is probably shared between Degenkolb and Coquard who were on the podium in 2020 and both have strong lead-outs who should be able to deliver them into a winning position.
There is then a trio of riders who will be nipping on the heels. These riders are Grosu, who was 3rd in 2019, Ahlstrand and then one of the next generation in Gaviria. All 3 of these riders also have strong lead-outs.
The final 2 riders we will highlight are Puma rider, Demare, who is best suited to the hilly nature of the first part of this one, and Groenewegen who was 2nd here in 2019 and will be looking to go one better tomorrow.
| | FLA | SPR | ACC | | Lead-Out | SPR | ACC | | Degenkolb | 76 | 84 | 81 | | Contreras | 78 | 80 | | Coquard | 73 | 84 | 83 | | Farantakis | 78 | 78 | | Grosu | 73 | 83 | 80 | | Van Poppel | 81 | 78 | | Gaviria | 76 | 83 | 84 | | Riabushenko | 77 | 75 | | Ahlstrand | 74 | 83 | 82 | | Cisse | 78 | 77 | | Lo Cicero | 71 | 83 | 77 | | Lovassy | 76 | 75 | | Demare | 73 | 82 | 81 | | Aregger | 78 | 77 | | Van der Lijke | 73 | 82 | 79 | | Holloway | 78 | 79 | | Groenewegen | 73 | 82 | 81 | | Minali | 77 | 77 | | Eislers | 79 | 82 | 78 | | Hofstetter | 77 | 78 | | Swift | 72 | 82 | 79 | | Cavendish | 79 | 75 | | Enger | 73 | 81 | 78 | | Schreurs | 72 | 71 | | Vesely | 73 | 81 | 80 | | Hodeg | 79 | 78 | | Samolenkov | 74 | 81 | 79 | | Banaszek | 77 | 79 | | Hsu | 75 | 80 | 79 | | Darbinyan | 76 | 74 | | Van der Sande | 75 | 79 | 79 | | Havik | 79 | 76 | | Kamberaj | 75 | 79 | 78 | | Bol | 77 | 75 | | Rowe | 78 | 79 | 80 | | Mudgway | 74 | 76 |
We have seen some success this season already from late attacks so we will highlight a few riders that the Peloton will need to keep an eye out for as we reach the finishing line.
Standing out at the top is the Grieg duo of Andersen and Wisniowski. Both riders are very strong on the Flats, don't mind an attack, and have a good finishing sprint as well.
A 2nd deadly duo here is present in the form of Evonik's Stoltz and Dzamastagic. Both are strong on the flats but bring a slightly different skill set. Stoltz loves an attack more than anyone while Dzamastagic has a great sprint on him.
We won't go further into the others listed here but they will be worth watching to see if they try their luck tomorrow.
| | FLA | SPR | ACC | FTR | | Andersen | 81 | 76 | 74 | 72 | | Wisniowski | 80 | 73 | 76 | 74 | | Culey | 79 | 66 | 70 | 74 | | Stoltz | 79 | 61 | 72 | 84 | | Dzamastagic | 78 | 76 | 78 | 78 | | Christensen | 78 | 68 | 65 | 71 | | Kurianov | 77 | 73 | 70 | 72 | | Mraouni | 77 | 71 | 74 | 71 | | Wohler | 77 | 71 | 72 | 80 | | van den Berg | 77 | 71 | 70 | 75 | | Kortsidakis | 77 | 68 | 72 | 76 |

Normally a race Groenewegen can fight for the podium. Let`s see how this works out.
Doubt that any of Sergent or Vermeersch are using their high flat for an attack as having Groenewegen in the same races might take their chances to do so. |

Would love a Rowe late attack or one of those sneaky top 10s he sometimes pulls. Break might be nice too. Thanks for a comprehensive preview LLS

Insane startlist. But wherever Gaviria is I expect him to fight for the win, and that is what I hope for (also for a good train). Nice preview

All in on a late attack from one of our top three guys. Hopefully they can manage to at least create some excitment in the final.

Home race, Demare time!
Last season's botched sprint preparation still hurts, Kennaugh took the win from the position Demare was in just moments earlier. I hope we gained enough experience from that to do better.

Damn it.
That was bad.
Seeing the results there basically is no reason why no single rider of my team was in the first group of 40...
Groenewegen +1'40 in 42nd is basically same as a 0 pointer.
If he was that weak, other riders should have jumped in such as the cobbled guys around Vermeersch or a flat rider like Sergent as others did. But none of them were around.
One of the worst performances all year for my team I guess and not ideal that Groenewegen, who always was reliable in any classics he entered, is taking a downtime at the moment.
At least Vanhoucke was in the break. Good moment of the race.
Thanks for the report and congrats tastasol. Expert of those late attacks. |

Interesting race. If it wasn’t for the fact that I had a pre race favorite it’s always nice to see something like this happen, as it is quite realistic.
I can live with 4th given the circumstances, and also 4 riders in top 50 gives a decent depth score.

Too bad the attackers held on when Grosu actually won a sprint. But, I guess without the chase behind the attackers the sprint would have been quite different so I'm happy with a podium place here.

A stunning race for us. Really happy with how we played it out in the final, and great to see Kragh holding all the way to the line. Thanks for the congrats!
That takes Pedersen over the 500 points line for the season as well. Not an amazing season by him, but really a big step up from last season. That's encouraging considering the takeover in leadership that's not far away.
Thanks for the report, LLS!

Meh, too messy yet again. Looks like Arnaud needed a bit more road to make it past a bunch of guys for a solid Top 5, but it keeps our points income steady.
SKA is gonna demand another raise! Congrats tastasol. And thank you LLS for the report.

Not a great result for Evonik but i really enjoyed the race / AI here. The late attacks by exactly those riders that should want to do so were great to watch and i enjoyed the winner a lot. Congrats!
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Up until this race Samolenkov was doing pretty good, but this 17th place is bad really bad.
