Coppa Placci
History
Year | Winner | Team | 2018 | Filippo Rocchetti | Campari - Super Dry | 2017* | Federico Rocchetti | Campari - Super Dry | 2016* | Moris Possoni | Team Ticos Air Costa Rica |
* = as San Marino Hill Classic
The fourth edition of the Coppa Placci, the second under its current name as it was previously and very generically called San Marino Hill Classic. An interesting fact here is that all three former winners are Italian, and all of them won from the breakaway. Special mention for the Rocchettis, who won the two previous editions for Campari, both are back and for the same team. The race remained in its C2 category but we have a nice mix of Continental, Pro Continental and amateur teams at the start in San Marino. Will we see another breakaway victory or can the pre-race favorites finally leave here with the trophy?
Profile
We revert to the route in the first two editions. A grand total of 13 climbs, six laps containing two tough climbs and a final climb which is an extension of the first. While rated as hilly, the mountainous character should not be underestimated, it's not just about the punch but also the endurance to cover all climbs. Luckily the scenery is beautiful.
Startlist
Favorites | MO | HL | RES | ACC | Outsiders | MO | HL | RES | ACC | Chaves | 76 | 79 | 73 | 72 | Villella | 65 | 77 | 74 | 80 | Costa | 70 | 79 | 70 | 70 | Diggle | 65 | 77 | 70 | 70 | Edmondson | 69 | 79 | 72 | 76 | Pellaud | 65 | 77 | 68 | 70 | Bystrom | 68 | 79 | 72 | 76 | Besada | 63 | 77 | 74 | 77 | Siskevicius | 73 | 78 | 72 | 75 | Fernandez | 75 | 75 | 69 | 66 | Roux | 65 | 78 | 71 | 75 | Gaspar | 75 | 75 | 72 | 67 | Hoelgaard | 74 | 77 | 72 | 74 | Masnada | 75 | 75 | 73 | 72 | Skjerping | 70 | 77 | 67 | 65 | Climbers | MO | HL | RES | ACC | Teklit | 70 | 77 | 72 | 70 | Seboka | 80 | 62 | 70 | 67 | Zingle | 69 | 77 | 69 | 76 | Valls | 79 | 75 | 77 | 72 | Hugentobler | 68 | 77 | 69 | 76 | Stetina | 78 | 67 | 74 | 65 | Mudarra | 68 | 77 | 70 | 68 | Rodrigues | 77 | 72 | 73 | 71 | Afonso | 66 | 77 | 73 | 70 | Hirschlein | 77 | 71 | 71 | 59 | Kebede | 76 | 76 | 70 | 72 | Solis | 77 | 58 | 75 | 64 |
The rider who combines climbing and punching skills is Chaves, and is thus billed as prime favorite, a title worth nothing in this race. His support is very good as well, Besada and Bravo on the puncheur side, Stetina and Solis on the climbing side.
Bystrom, Costa and Edmondson are equal to Chaves when it comes to hills ability, but don't have amazing climbing capabilities. That doesn't mean they won't survive, they have shown they can, and if they are still with Chaves at the bottom of the last climb they can easily challenge him for the victory.
Siskevicius is a terrific puncheur, and good on the climbing side. Roux is a terrific puncheur, but not so good on the climbing side. The former is definitely a contender, the latter might be one as well.
Looking down the field of people who possess both of the alleged qualities necessary: Hoelgaard, Kebede, Fernandez, Gaspar and Masnada.
Seboka is the best climber but that skill doesn't translate to the hills. One could wonder if that is the winning combination on this route.
If there is a pure climber we could name as favorite it would be Valls. Good climber, decent puncheur, nice acceleration, very experienced, and a known winner.
With the history of the race, chances are none of the previously mentioned riders will win and a lucky member of the breakaway receives the kisses from the podium girls. By that logic, any of the 170 riders could win and this list has been rather useless.

Obviously hoping for a good ride from Costa but I'm weary of the MO influence... If he has a shocker then hopefully Fernandez manages something to write home about.

Well, since the MO/HL ratio is f*cking us hard this season. I won't hope for anything here.

With this profile I am sure we can forget anyone with a MO > 75.
So my guess would be Valls with such strong supporting alibitys, Chaves as the only puncher able to break top 5 on a good day.
On by own team Estifanos Kebede should be able to finish around top 10-12 or something like that.
But would be too cool to see Federico Rocchetti do what he does best - again, but will no climber skill it is more than unlikely.
If we get a hard race might see a lot of riders not able to finish this one.

Our last C2 race, it should be too hard for Pibernik, but maybe Petrovski can do something. We'll take any point we can get

Can't imagine this going anywhere but to the climbers, that is a boatload of climbing to do, and I don't think even Chaves will handle it well. I got Valls taking this fairly easily.

Will be interesting to see how it goes, I have high expectations as my squad (albeit smaller) is almost the stronger (minus Intxausti) that I could've sent.

Now, the climbing will help my all-climber team, I brought it on purpose Seboka obvs won't do anything, but the likes of Hirschlein or Baltazar might, but also thinking on a successful breakaway like some years back.

So we've got a team full of Youngsters here, plus Greggy and hoe town boy Maccagli.
A full squad of riders that we signed at level 1, with Greggy being from our first season. Hopefully he can get a decent result and we are expecting to see Marc Hirschi in the break again, something he has made a bit of a habit of so far in his fledgling career.

Awesome attacking from Hojgaard. Always cool to get an unexpected top 5 thanks to aggressive racing.
Great report Marcovdw!

Despite the hard profile, it apparently still was a puncheur race.
Though once again in San Marino the breakaway steals it from them.
Big race for the amateurs. |

Rodrigues a true legend in c2 races
This race went much better than expected for the team. It was a shame that Rodrigues did not win but it was still a great victory.
Thanks for the report

Another shit race, it was obvious that the breakaway was gonna do it but it was Ropero in the break, nothing gained here when there were 4-5 stronger riders that could've attacked. But oh well, thanks for the report Marco and gratz Bianchi

Abelouache! Awesome ride from the breakaway and great result, even though in that group he really could have won it. Can't complain too much with such a shock result to be there at all

Painful to win a race, yet not win as Chaves only won against the peloton, and forgot about the breakaway. I think the split in the breakaway early really did some damage as that meant teams that should have been working may not have been, including my own.

Congratz to Bianchi and thanks for a detailed the report.
8th from Estifanos Kebede fantastic considering this was won by the breakaway (as it always is). Nice bonus points we could not expect.
Surprise but glad this turn out to be a puncher race.
