The Tour of Southland has 5 previous editions with 2012 being the first edition and obviously some gap years in between. The profile changed quite a bit from being a puncheur event towards a climber event and later a time trial heavy race. This resulted in lots of different winners while 2019 goes back to the roots by being a puncheur event again.
Other than that it was always a good race for the sprinters as it had plenty of opportunities for the fast men to get a stage win or two and it`s not surprising to see PCT known sprinters such as Cavendish, Maksimov, Nelson, Guillen, Serebriakov on the winner lists. Only Maksimov of those is back here in 2019 though and so he might become the lone most successful stage hunter of the race.
GC wise some of the very best top puncheurs of the PCT are in Southland to perform well on those two untypical ______/ hill finishes.
Claeys, Di Maggio and Schreurs are the top riders and surely hope for stage wins and GC.
The group of challengers is big though and Gautier, Borges or Vakoc in especially already have shown their class this season while Jensen and Betancourt also aren`t far from the best.
Lots of outside riders then as well, such as Bellis, Bilbao or the strongest CT rider in Edmondson, who had a good start to the season.
| Hi | Sp | Acc | | Hi | Sp | Acc | Claeys | 83 | 67 | 73 | Bilbao | 79 | 71 | 75 | Di Maggio | 82 | 65 | 75 | Edmondson | 79 | 70 | 76 | Schreurs | 81 | 71 | 74 | Paulinho | 79 | 68 | 75 | Borges | 80 | 71 | 81 | Gebrezgabihier | 79 | 67 | 69 | Vakoc | 80 | 71 | 74 | Bellis | 78 | 74 | 75 | Gautier | 80 | 68 | 77 | Barbin | 78 | 71 | 76 | Betancourt | 80 | 67 | 74 | Boily | 78 | 68 | 74 | Jensen | 80 | 66 | 76 | Quevedo | 78 | 65 | 75 | Vogt | 80 | 62 | 63 | Pichon | 78 | 62 | 74 |
Sprinter wise TdU stage winner Ciolek might be the best followed by Vanderbiest. Almost as fast though record hunting Maksimov, Enger, Saber or several others making the 3 sprints very open.
And with such easy looking hills, you never know, if one of them on a good day could find some unknown climbing legs to contest the puncheurs.
| Hi | Sp | Acc | | Hi | Sp | Acc | Ciolek | 65 | 82 | 78 | Drapac | 53 | 80 | 79 | Vanderbiest | 64 | 82 | 77 | Pelucchi | 68 | 79 | 77 | Enger | 69 | 81 | 78 | Mezgec | 67 | 79 | 77 | Saber | 68 | 81 | 79 | Stallaert | 67 | 79 | 76 | Maksimov | 60 | 81 | 84 | Von Hoff | 66 | 79 | 77 | Thorsen | 53 | 81 | 83 | Selig | 65 | 79 | 81 | Moser | 67 | 80 | 79 | Havik | 64 | 79 | 76 | Manninen | 66 | 80 | 80 | Bennett | 63 | 79 | 79 | Kupfernagel | 64 | 80 | 80 | Suryadi | 62 | 79 | 76 | Lavoine | 60 | 80 | 78 | Peeters | 62 | 79 | 77 |
Interesting riders to mention are Feng, Stallaert, Van der Haar, Hermans, Mraouni, Aaltio or Bellis due to their great roleur skills combined with decent hill or sprint skills, which could be handy on such profiles.

This looks like a sprinters race to me. No van Asbroeck?

Yeah! Debut for KHJ as a 80 rated hill rider, will be fun to see what he can do now Stallaert fighting for decent stage result as well?! |

Maybe I made a mistake there, but I thought those hill finishes would be too hard for him.
I'm relying on Cerny instead, but so far the AI hasn't treated him well. Pelucchi would be great to have a decent finish somewhere.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Hopeless in all important terrains, so we need to repeat our breakaway festival from TDU! Aaron Gate should be the one to try so, riding on home soil should definitely make for the motivation, I guess.

Looking at that startlist this might be the first and only time we manage to pull together a train for Ciolek
Bilbao also has some making up to do for his blunders in Slovenia. This is a big race in our battle to survive!

First real race for Claeys, Grand Duche was decent so I'm expecting more of the same here.
Drapac for the sprints, hoping for a few points.

Interesting race here, if I had any hope in Enger then a couple of podiums would be good here. Bellis is also a good underdog as well so a top 10 GC is very much in grasp here as well.
Good luck everyone!

Campari clearly the underdog in this race, no matter what any points will be welcome , best option i would guess is Kadri going for the KoM / breakaway win.
Then again Rocchetti have done it before. hope he will turn out to be crazy again.

No high hopes for this race as Vogt is there to spoil any team strategy

High expectations for Borges here. On paper he should be a strong contender, but we'll see.
Thanks for the preview roturn!

Took a risk not bringing Kelderman here and instead having Saber as the leader hoping for the hills to not be decisive. If not a great GC placing, hoping for three good sprint stages from Saber, who also has decent flat and leadout support.
Thanks for the preview

Good sprint from Drapac. He seems to be performing consistently on this game.

Nothing to see here breakaways, guys. Don't want to see the first Jayco mention on position 100+ in the results list!
