Clasico San Cristobal Preview
The first race of the season for the Continental Tour and like it has become customary, we head to Cuba for the San Cristobal Classic. The course remains a difficult one to call, and while it mainly favours the punchers, there are steep climbs which the versatile climbers will not be too shy on. The Top 2 from last year do not make an appearance this time, but third placed Edmondson is back and should be among the favourites for a top result.
Name | MON | HIL | RES | ACC | Chaves | 76 | 79 | 73 | 72 | Edmondson | 69 | 79 | 72 | 76 | Siskevicius | 73 | 78 | 72 | 75 | Bystrom | 68 | 79 | 72 | 76 | Hoelgaard | 74 | 77 | 72 | 74 | Costa | 70 | 79 | 70 | 70 | Squire | 77 | 77 | 70 | 71 | Laas | 74 | 76 | 73 | 76 | Villella | 65 | 77 | 74 | 80 | Teklit | 70 | 77 | 72 | 70 | Bugge | 74 | 75 | 74 | 72 | Masnada | 75 | 75 | 73 | 72 | De Vos | 75 | 75 | 73 | 69 | Besada | 63 | 77 | 74 | 77 | Brandao | 73 | 76 | 71 | 69 | Ivanov | 76 | 74 | 75 | 68 | Bravo | 70 | 76 | 73 | 70 | Afonso | 66 | 77 | 73 | 70 | Zingle | 69 | 77 | 69 | 76 | Hategeka | 72 | 77 | 69 | 66 |
Esteban Chaves is the top favourite for this race, and he is as good on the hills as he is versatile. He would be looking to get his team's touted promotion push off to a great start. Azteca have another interesting candidate for this race in Squire, who could shine if the climbs play out as being hard. Whether the latter is allowed to race for his own purpose remains to be seen.
Running them close should be Siskevicius and last year's podium finisher, Edmondson, with the latter having improved in the off-season as well.
Leading Equinor's hills charge is their leader for this season, Bystrom, who should be another podium contender in this race. His backups should provide him a boost over the competition.
Hoelgaard and Laas are similar riders, with the former holding an edge in climbing while the latter has better backup stats.
Euskaltel's new puncher leader Costa should challenge for a Top 5 at least, and remains a great contender for the CT despite his off-season decline.
Villella, Teklit and Besada are the pure punchers who find themselves lower down the favourites list, because of weakness in one or more of their other useful stats.
Interesting names like Masnada, Bugge and De Vos make the list of Top 10 contenders, mainly because this race has proved to be difficult to predict in past seasons.
Name | MON | HIL | RES | ACC | Gaspar | 75 | 75 | 72 | 67 | Molard | 71 | 75 | 73 | 75 | Mehr-Wenige | 66 | 78 | 69 | 67 | Roche | 74 | 76 | 69 | 66 | Mudarra | 68 | 77 | 70 | 68 | Selander | 68 | 76 | 71 | 76 | Tanovitchii | 68 | 76 | 72 | 71 | Agostini | 69 | 74 | 76 | 72 | Diggle | 65 | 77 | 70 | 70 | Fernandez | 75 | 75 | 69 | 66 |
Mehr-Wenige sticks out as an entry into the outsiders list but his role might be limited to one of helping Bystrom only. Most of the others in this list will be chief domestiques to the leaders in their respective teams. An exception to this could be Tanovitchii, who might switch or share leadership duties with Laas in the race.

Shame to not see Roux here at the site of his first victory in Xero colours and the groundwork for his beastly 2017 season. But fair enough to let the others have a chance Going to be a really interesting face in an open field, cheering for Diggle to win but would like to see Siskevicius, Edmondson or Chaves too. Mostly hoping for a great race and excited for the CT managers getting into it. Thanks for the preview Abhi and the upcoming report.

Oh here we go! New season is upon us and time to get excited!
Some big named puncheurs in the division now, so I'll be happy just to be named in the report and maybe a Top 15 finish

Big race for Azteca, starting off on a terrain that fits us perfectly allowing our versatile puncheurs a shot at an early victory and setting up the team at the top, where we could remain all season.
Chaves and Squire certainly look the part for this race, and have good help from Besada and Bravo who will both fill in that support role just fine. Not going to be a fun race for our cobbles trio (Orue/Richardson/Corwin) but they just need to get us through the first half of the race in good shape, and do it all utility man from our home Mexico, Uri Martins Sandoval, will debut for us and take care until it is time for the peloton to really get reduced.

Hoping the team is active here as we ideally need to get off to a good start.
Costa should be up there with the favourites and I rate McEvoy if it isn't raced too hard until the end. I do need both to score well throughout the season so this is the first opportunity to see if that'll be the case.
Great to see the season starting and looks like it could be a thriller!

Excited to be starting the season! Hopes are Laas, Tanovitchii and Budyak can get themselves in the mix to steal some points from this C2 race we were more or less forced to race...

I hope Martin Weiss can pull off a surprise here. Statwise he is not that far off some of the outsiders, so with a fair bit of luck, we might gain some points.

A huge amount of pretty decent puncheurs in the CT this year, which makes races like this very open and hard to predict. Hopefully Stuyven can get a nice start to the season and get a decent result!

Our classic season opener, with PCT restrictions a top twenty would be a good result. Great to see the racing getting started again!!!

Very interesting profile to set the tone of what we can expect from this season, with a different engine.
Last year we did not see Mountain skill matter at all, Dylan Teuns the best climber among the puncher losing 1'07". I don't know but that might be a bit different this time, that said my guess would be that ACC still will be more important playing into the hands of Edmondson Bystrom and especially Villella.
Let's see, anyway thanks Abhishek for the great preview.

Wohoow, we're starting!
EDIT: cheering for Umerbekov of course, he should've got a mention in the preview
