Clasico San Cristobal
Welcome to the 2017 Continental season! As has been traditional these last few years, the division kicks off in tropical Cuba and 187km of beautiful sunshine, which should draw large crowds out to enjoy a festive day. Unfortunately for the riders they’ll have no chance to enjoy the weather, as they fight to be the first race winner in the Continental Division this year!
Only one of the four previous winners will race today, that being 2015 winner Gaimon, who rides as an outsider chance but no favourite, however his team that season, In-n-Out will try to take a second victory, as they impressively lead the list of favourites:
Favourites: | HL | ACC | | HL | ACC | van der Hugenhaben | 80 | 66 | Rodriguez Galindo | 76 | 67 | Chaves | 79 | 72 | Haavardsholm | 75 | 80 | Roux | 78 | 75 | Anderson | 75 | 75 | Boily | 78 | 74 | Wyss | 75 | 75 | Pellaud | 77 | 70 | Besada | 75 | 75 | Diggle | 77 | 70 | Gaimon | 75 | 74 | Grippo | 77 | 69 | Costa | 75 | 73 | Kratochvila | 77 | 64 | Hollenstein | 75 | 73 | Vichot | 76 | 80 | Chérel | 75 | 72 | Hugentobler | 76 | 76 | Schurter | 75 | 71 | Othman | 76 | 76 | Wallays | 75 | 69 | Rybakov | 76 | 72 | Khripta | 75 | 69 | Lietaer | 76 | 71 | Godoy | 75 | 63 | Cunego | 76 | 70 | Becerra | 75 | 62 | Gilbert | 76 | 69 | Durasek | 75 | 59 | Nzeke | 76 | 68 | Chaoufi | 75 | 58 | Wahyudi | 76 | 67 |
There are a lot of strong puncheurs in the CT this year and none want to miss the first opportunity to score. van der Hugenhaben is at the top of the list and for good reason, after a slightly disapointing PCT season he’ll hope to be better in the CT but he still has a big question mark over his ability to accelerate.
The next name in mind is of course Chaves, who also rode in the Pro Continental Division last season, however he is more consistant than the former rider. He’s also very effective in the mountains in case some of the climbs turn out to require more long term strength.
Biting right at their heels are Roux and Boily, both are very capable riders all-round which is something important for puncheurs and the distance should pose no challenge for Roux who will get very strong support from Diggle and Nzeke.
Of course, with such a packed startlist it’s hard to quite pick out names past the obvious best 4 riders. Vichot stands out for his acceleration, the Sauber trio of Hugentobler and Othman and Wahyudi allows for three very capable riders who can collaborate.
Cunego and Gilbert present an interesting duo for Repsol as the former can benefit if the climbing proves tougher than expected while the latter can escape on the flats. Grippo and Pellaud are also present strong hill options.
Overall many men and some we don’t even have space to mention have the capability to be the first winner this year, so certainly an exciting opener in store for us tomorrow!

Can't wait! Hopefully Vichot can bring home the goods from Cuba
Love your reporting style trek, by the way...

The season start is getting very close now, the triple threat is gearing up and have a nice supporting cast there to help them get into position to follow any attacks late on.
If either Forcellini or Schurter are allowed to get in the break they will be tough to catch and give us another chance to score, so I'm hoping the team can do something even if we don't have a CT Superstar Scorer on the hills.

DEBUT!!!!
Hopefully the team just goes out there and has some fun. I can make this one-off exception
On a serious note, a top 15 would probably be the best case scenario.

Clasico San Cristobal is one of the most anticipated races of the season because the CT division is often more unknown than the other season opener. How dominant can vd Hugenhaben be? Who are the other top puncheurs? Chavez? Vichot? Roux? Questions over questions. Good luck to all new teams

Nice little preview here. Hopefully a top 5 should be possible. Obviously hoped to dodge Chaves and Hugen but I doubt that is gonna be possible for most of our races this season.

My money is on Roux! Should be an interesting opener, as knockout said.

Beginning to get a bit excited.
Have no faith in Khirpata or Haavardsholm to actually win the thing, but I think they’ll both do well.

As i said in the preview on my HQ, something around 20 points will be very welcomed.
I think the chances are good for at least a top10 with Cunego or Gilbert

Excited to get the season underway. Obviously looking for a great start from Chaves, but we don't have a full squad or our best support here for him. Will have to see what he can do without everything available backing him, and we won't take long to see the duals between van der Hug...whatever and Chaves.

So excited!! Hopefully we can achieve a strong result however, with some way stronger riders I feel the win is far out of reach...
