Giro di Lombardia

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/pt/pt_ilb.png

The 2016 PT season comes to an end in traditional fashion with the Giro di Lombardia. One of the longest races on the calendar and equally one of the most historic, it should prove a fitting ending to the season. While the title seems to wrapped up, the battle for the next few places in the rankings remains very much alive - and the relegation picture could still potentially change here.

Really intrigued to see how this one plays out looking at the mountainous hills, but also the downhill finish. Makes me think Spilak is the favourite, but anything can happen, really.

Fingers crossed for a podium by Boasson Hagen, which would be a great end to the season for us. Though, a top 10 is the most important goal, as that's a sponsor goal. Completing it could be promising considering the budget for 2017, as it would give us 4/5 this year.

Our last in the PT for a while, hopefully we can do something here. Some mid-race attacks would be wonderful.

Hope that our Norwegian friend, Edvald Boasson Hagen can take the win, but fear the MO/Hill ratio for him. Guys like Spilak and Trofimov should be hard to beat here.

Not expecting too much from Bobridge, but of course I hope he will grab some valuable points with a solid finish. Just repeat Tasmania.. and not something bad like LBL..

Not sure about the newest rankings and how relaxed we can be Smile

Last season we had a very very hard time going into this race, but a true miracle made us overperform to take the throne. This season, there's no possible way for us to lose the battle - if I'm not mistaken we are close to 2000 points ahead of number 2. (1800 points or so). So this time we can sit back and enjoy whatever comes our way.

On paper we have a strong setup for both possible solutions, whether it be a punchy stage with a long rage attack (Koretzky) or a top top favorite stage (Spilak). Also with riders like Le Gac, David, Campero, Kastrantas, Gougeard and Eibegger we are as strong as we can possibly get deducting Coppel who would be a waste of racedays.

What I will look for is the top 5 battle and the relegation battle. Nothing is certain, but for me the relegation battle is between Movistar and Pokerstars. Pokerstars will need to be lucky to fight for more points than Gazelle, and the gap to RBC is too big. Movistar have Tejay van Garderen who could potentially score anywhere between 50-280 points. He will need to get atleast 4th if my math isn't totally off, to get enough points for Movistar to realistically stay up.

On the other end of the table it is a battle between Becherovka, Aegon, Aker, Vesuvio, Puma and potentially (if scoring a huge result) Tinkoff or Evonik. I can't remember a season where the top fight (behind the winner) have been this close. Between 2nd and 11th is just 550 points, and among the top 8 is only 350. My bet here is that either Aker, Vesuvio or Evonik will surpass Becherovka, but only one of them will. So podium seems secure for our czech friends, but 2nd will need either Sagan to perform very very well, or for those three top top riders to all perform slightly below top level.

Hoping for the perfect conclusion to a disappointing season. On home turf Ponzi has to be the favourite, especially after his exploits last year so fingers crossed.

The big showdown. We're extremely close to relegation, but a good performance by Ginnani will most likely guarantee we stay up. Absolute thriller.

I really need a miracle this time. Every point is going to to count in the battle for top 3, my major goal of the season. Go Sagan!

One more half decent race please and we are there!!

One last effort, one last opportunity.
We're well-equipped for any race situation, with the pure puncheurs Kelderman, Felline, Bol and Mager as well as the climbers Nerz, Arndt, Bongiorno and Herklotz. I really hope we position well so everyone of them can perform according to their abilities and contribute valuable points.

Places 2-4 are gone, congratulations to Becherovka, Aegon and Aker for that impressive feat.

69 points behind Vesuvio. If Kelderman finishes at least two places ahead of Gastauer, that could be doable if the rest of the team scores well too.

47 points ahead of Evonik. We clearly have the upper hand on them depth-wise, so I hope that suffices more or less regardless of how Kelderman vs Skujins goes.

116 points up on Tinkoff. If Trofimov finishes first or second, they'll surely pass. If he doesn't, I again believe in our depth, especially since their team will probably have to work.

It'll end up being somewhere between 5th and 8th. I can't complain about any of those positions, but I'd surely like one last good race that lives up to our hopes. Even more so because most in the last few months didn't.

Additionally, I'll also keep track of the relegation fight, which certainly won't be very enjoyable considering what's at stake and how likeable all the teams down there are.

Good luck to everyone!

Tasmania disappointing result really hurt our changes to be in the Top-5/Top-3 at the end of the season, everything is so close this season. Also we have a sponsorgoal here (Top-3).

Sadly, I see no way how we can surpass Becherovka. The point scoring options for Skujins are kinda limited due to the importance of the MO stat and my hill support didnt score well so far in hilly races so I cannot really expect a change in that anyway. Becherovka is gone for me. Aker and Aegon are basically gone as well.

Vesuvio is 116 points ahead which will be very difficult for us to crack. As Gastauer is also a decent option for this Skujins will have to finish on the first two places to have a realistic shot to overtake them which is unlikely.

47 points behind Puma is the most interesting battle for me. This can go eitherway as Skujins > Kelderman but Evonik depth < Puma depth. We're underdog though.

Tinkoff is 69 points behind and they have the top favourite here so they have good chances to overtake me. If he finishes outside of the top two then Skujins might save us though.

eBuddy also within reach but i hardly see them getting enough points without Gesink.

So yeah - 8th place in PT ranking is expected with chances to climb all the way to 5th with a great race. This will still be a great season regardless of how well we do here considering where we stood a season ago, the presesaon expectations and the performance of my leaders.

My favourites are (in order) Trofimov, Spilak and Bakelandts with EBH and Ponzi as obvious contenders. A final highlight from Cunego would be so sweet though.

I'm still hoping for a podium though. Skujins must only be considered an underdog with all the mountains but continuing the streak (so far 5 podiums in 5 attended monuments) would be so damn awesome.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Terrible last race for us though I suspect we stay up as I can't see any Pokerstars riders ahead of mine which will be a celebration all the same!

Well done AI, you kinda messed up... Cunego and Ricco both legends finishing close, would've liked Cunego in the top 10 though, rather than Ricco...

Nepomnyachsniy also in the first group, however that's basically saying nothing with a group that big.

Strong finish by Hofland. Picked him up as a level 1 rider in my very first season, so cool to see him finish 7th in a monument. I also have a top 10 goal here, so he saved the day after Ginanni kinda dropped the ball finishing 13th.

Congrats to Kenya! And thanks for the report jph!

Simon Spilak will be shot after this season. His team have served the perfect season for him, but again and again he pisses away great opportunities. This time missing an obvious (and easy one would think) goal of making a top 10. Dear god that was dreadful!
