The Vuelta a Colombia is a huge climbing event on the PT calendar for several seasons already. 2 sprint stages and then 4 mountain stages, all finish on top of the last long climb. Nothing for puncheurs or time trialists. It`s a pure climber fest.
Both of the last two GC winners are here again and belong to the very best in  Spilak and  Alarcon but the competition is huge. Better than any season before maybe even though it`s a vey similar start list to last year with some additions here and there.
Sprinter wise Maksimov is here to repeat his win from last season but is challenged by Tzortzakis, Van Poppel, Groenewegen, Guardini and others.
By the look of the startlist it could actually be a huge race for I-Gen and a title deciding event clearly as Becherovka, Vesuvio, Aker or Puma will all struggle to challenge the Spilak/Tzortzakis combination.

The depth in the climber's department is crazy here, which was to be expected. Just like roturn writes in the preview, this could well be the title deciding event, as Spilak comes here as the favourite with neither Schleck nor Pluchkin to be seen. Should also be interesting to see what Dombrowski can do after his great Tour de France.
Judging by pure climbing ability, I must be satisfied with a top 15 from Guldhammer, which is probably the lowest goal I've ever had for him in mountainous stage races.

I think the best we can hope for here is a few breakaway results due to the ridiculous depth. Should be an interesting race at the very front. |

Don't think it was the worst idea here to target the sprint stages here as the depth in climbers show it would be hard in the GC so go Boivon |

Huge mistake not to send my leadout riders here. Tzortzakis as a pre-stage favorite is likely to fuck us up badly here. Gotta hope for Spilak to lead him out, otherwise it's going to be a missed opportunity. Obviously hoping to win here but I expect it to be between Alarcon an Dombrowski. Main goal must be to outscore Becherovka if we are to win. My hope is that they have a better race than me, though, as I still think it's Roman's turn to take the crown.

Not much to expect here, unsurprisingly.
I decided to go for an all-climbers team, omitting the first stage in order to maybe have Arndt give it a shot on stage 4 and take advantage of the possibly already tired sprinters. Furthermore, that hopefully gives us a couple of breakaway appearances to maybe challenge for the KoM.
GC-wise, the trio Nerz/Arndt/Bongiorno should be unable to get into the Top 10, but if they share leadership, they might all be in the Top 25 and give us some depth points as well as a good place in the team classification.
Festina really have a prime opportunity here and I hope they will live up to that, for personal as well as rankings reasons. In that regard, it does look like the teams right below us don't have the biggest scoring potential here either. I hope that will become reality too.

Spilak certainly most likely winner, would be nice to give Madrazo a spanking again at least

Big points for Metinvest and eBuddy, but since Pluchkin and Gesink are done with their seasons, that's fine. Good positioning over that last bump seemed crucial.

The missing train clearly costed a stagewin here, but that falls directly back to myself. 3rd is good taking everything into consideration. Congrats on the nice Guardini win :-)

Good to see us safe through that stage, and very cool to see Bazhkou join the breakaway fun, hopefully a sign of what's to come on the mountain stages. Galta could be a great rider for such adventures.
