Étape Douze | Montpellier - Mont Ventoux | 184km | Mountainous (____/) | Deux Cat. 4, un HC, et le un sprint intermédiaire (duh)
And bang! Straight back into it with the Bald Mountain testing the mettle of every rider in the race once more on Bastille Day. Like 2014 we may well see a brief stint of a Frenchman in yellow after a likely French majority break on stage 10, depending on beforehand GC. Expect an assault from Rolland, Barguil, Bardet and Pinot for French pride and the usual majority french break for Bastille Day.
Chris Froome dominated last time out, back in his first TDF victory in 2013. It's a _____/ stage, but on Ventoux, it has to be, and you won't find anyone complaining about that. GC men should be fresh after two easier days and we should see a straight shoot-out between them, provided Team Sky aren't just trying to make friends like last year and the break battles it out.
I'm sure you've all seen this picture a lot but I need it in the preview, and we all should take in the brutality of what every rider, from Froome to Kittel, will have to take on. 16km at a relentless 9%. Keep tuned to your TV for another real sign of who's hot and who's not, ahead of tomorrow's bumpy ITT. This will also be a test of the recuperation heading into the Alps later of the two BMC men in particular with doubts over them, but everyone really. Nibali and Valverde may start to fatigue, being the only GC men to finish the Giro, and in first and second respectively. Lucky for them, they're just super-domestiques here.

So as most of you know because of wind the finish cannot be on top of Ventoux. instead the stage'll finish at Chalet Reynard about 6kms from the top.
After French pride was dented l by les bleus Sunday surely the French cyclists will take revanche on Bastille day. French champion Vichot will already be wearing the red numbers tomorrow but will surely try to get in the break again.
Pinot surely is the main hope for the French tomorrow or will Barguil or Bardet be given some leeway by other GC contenders. Last French rider to win on Bastille day remains David Moncoutie back in 2005.
Also worth mentioning is that the last three stage winners on Quatorze Juillet have all gone on to win the Maillot Jaune.

Tour de France finished on top of Ventoux 9 times.It also crossed the summit 6 times.The first rider to cross the summit was Lucien Lazarides,in the 18th stage of the 1951 Tour.(Ventoux was climbed from Malaucene side in 1951)
The first time a stage finished at the top of Ventoux was the 18th stage of 1958 Tour although it was a MTT.Charly Gaul beated Bahamontes that day to win the stage.

The 11th stage in 1955 was a special one.That day Geminiani,Kübler and Bauvin’s teammate Scodeller attacked before Ventoux.Bobet attacked several times on Ventoux and Gaul couldn’t follow him and cracked.Gaul was so new to the highest level of racing and his weaknesses werne’t known.His achilles heel was heat.Bobet caught the break.Geminiani told Bobet to go alone because he was cooked.Kübler and Scodeller cracked and finished more than 20 minutes down.Bobet pressed on to win the stage.Gaul came 6 minutes later.This was the stage that Bobet used to win his 3rd Tour.
In the 13th stage of 1967 Tour Tom Simpson died.Near the summit of Mont Ventoux, Simpson started to zig-zag.He fell off of his bike with 1 km to go but was able to get back on it. After riding a short distance further, he collapsed. He was pronounced dead after being airlifted to a hospital. The post-mortem examination found that he had taken amphetamine and alcohol, a diuretic combination which proved fatal when combined with the heat, the hard climb of the Ventoux and the stomach complaint.Jacques Anquetil even said that Simpson died because lack of a dope as far as I remember.
In 2000 Armstrong let Pantani to win which he indicated in a series of press conferences Pantani was enraged and humiliated. He lashed back saying that he was the better rider and had fairly won the sprint. The dispute hit its nadir when Armstrong called Pantani "Elefantino", a nickname that Pantani detested because it made fun of his prominent ears.
Mont Ventoux was also a finishing location frquently for the Dauphine.The winners in Dauphine are:

Also in 2008 the stage finished in Mont Serein after approaching from the Malaucene side and the stage winner was Cadel Evans who betaed Robert Gesink in a 2-man sprint.
Also this year Chalet Reynard(where we will finish today) was used in Paris-Nice more than 120 kms to the line

Can there be a single important stage that doesn't get nerfed by the day of the race? It's not that I don't understand why they're changing them now with the terrible conditions. The questions is how they can never predict things like this in the first place year after year.

Well whole finish installation has to be setup this night so early decsision is for safety and organisation of all that.

You can not predict winds at Ventoux the time when tour routes will announced.
Also impossible to predict Giro hilltop snow depth and weather. |

I understand that this case was unavoidable, but disagree that this is a fine alternative. They deleted part of the race, and there was nothing done to make up for any of it. Are there not other small climbs they could have added in along the way?

Changing the stage means that prior recon done by teams could be discredited--unfairly favouring teams that didn't bother with this stage, given it now "doesn't exist". Teams that DID recon here are still given the same advantage. Difference is, this decision should have been made a day in advance, if they've been "watching the wind" for so long.

Should be a harder wind leading up to Ventoux, coupled with the shortened climb, not really great for Quintana. I think he might have used as much as Froome did today honestly, very much in his favour, the wind that is. |

I think they should race with winds like in that video.
Gives the big guys like Cancellara, Sagan, Greipel a chance to drop those flimsy climbers!

Not going to be able to catch this live, which is pretty disappointing, and indeed so is the cancellation of the top third of the climb. Nevertheless going by the profile the climb to Chalet Reynard is 10km @ 9% which is still really really difficult. Nairo said before the race that he will try and attack from far out on Ventoux, so let's hope he keeps his word
