GP Liechtenstein
4th edition for the PT Liechtenstein GP. 8000 meters of climbing are waiting for the riders, which imply at least 8 hours in the saddle, and also, they will have to face one of the most technical descents in the world for 13 times: that’s why it’s often considered the toughest event in the MG calendar. Every rider who’ll manage to even finish this will be rightfully called a hero.
The startlist is even stronger, compared to last year’s. No Pluchkin this time, who will probably try to recuperate all the energies he lost during the Vuelta – Tour double-header. However, last year’s dominator Andy Schleck is here once again trying to defend his title and should be considered the main favorite, considering how better than everyone else he was in the Giro mountains. Madrazo and Spilak are also here, and the first knows the race pretty well, having won the inaugural edition, while the latter has never had the chance to take part to it.
Even though the biggest favorites were already named, there are some other riders who have the chance to win this race on a good day and surely shouldn’t be forgotten. Here’s a quick look on the startlist and the other main contenders:
Rider | MOU | STA | RES | ACC | Angel Madrazo | 85 | 81 | 80 | 72 | Simon Spilak | 85 | 80 | 81 | 74 | Andy Schleck | 85 | 77 | 82 | 79 | Stefan Denifl | 84 | 75 | 71 | 65 | Jose Alarcon | 84 | 71 | 74 | 78 | Peter Velits | 83 | 75 | 74 | 68 | Romain Sicard | 82 | 80 | 79 | 70 | Vincenzo Nibali | 82 | 78 | 77 | 59 | Timofey Kritskiy | 82 | 78 | 76 | 67 | Joseph Dombrowski | 82 | 78 | 76 | 74 | Damiano Cunego | 82 | 77 | 81 | 77 | Daniel Martin | 82 | 77 | 78 | 76 | Sergio Luis Henao Montoya | 82 | 75 | 79 | 73 | Rasmus Guldhammer | 81 | 74 | 75 | 76 | Lachlan Morton | 80 | 77 | 76 | 65 | Thibaut Pinot | 80 | 76 | 79 | 69 |
As said, Madrazo, Schleck and Spilak come here as the main riders to watch out for.
Nevertheless, mountain goat stereotype Alarcon can be really dangerous on a decent enough day, and he also won the Vuelta in a magnificent way last year.
On the other hand, Denifl and Velits, who haven’t had a really exciting year thus far, will try to get some glory out of this. The Slovakian came third here last year, so he knows what to do and how to do it.
Cunego is not as good as he used to be on the big mountains, yet he comes from a win in 2013 and a second place in 2014. Hence why he shouldn’t be discounted either, also taking into account that he’s had an overwhelmingly good year so far.
Nibali stands out as the best descender in here, and could try to rely on that, but he doesn’t have a good explosiveness on his side for sure. Aker’s combo of Martin and Guldhammer does though. Other threats include the likes of Dombrowski, Henao, Kritskiy, Sicard, Marquez, Morton and Pinot. They are all really solid climbers, and even though they have less hopes of a victory, they can always delight their managers with a top 10.

I need to do better than Vesuvio here to have a shot at winning the PT, but that will be extremely hard to achieve. Fingers are crossed all the way!

The only race this season featuring both Martin and Guldhammer. Really hoping that results in something, as we need a good race here considering the fight for a top 5 overall. A bad race and we're in serious trouble.
Though, admittedly a top 10 has to be the goal looking at the startlist, and then it will be a bonus if Guldhammer tries something surprisingly early. |

No expectations except Morton at least tumbling in around 15 or something. Only a lucky move/split could lead to a Top-10, which is highly unlikely here. Breakaway attempt is welcome, even though it probably won't lead to anything with our guys here

It would be perfect if Velits could repeat his result from the last season. The realistic hope is at least a top 10 result though. We need something better to keep a chance to beat Festina or Vesuvio though.

Bring two 80 climbers and everyone on the squad is 71 rated or above. But, we are expected to do nothing... It's times like this I wish I was still in the PCT.
Denifl steps up to the challenge, we might be back there pretty soon.

If we should have a rider in top50, there is a brand new Dacia ready for every other PT manager.
But dont be looking forward to that new ride, because we wont finish in top50.
Loanee Salinas from Azteca got a special chance to lead the team in this race, as the gift for his great services during La Vuelta and Le Tour.

Yeah top 5 is hoped for but could be difficult if stamina has any part to play.
Good luck all and may the crappy teams grovel in the broomwagon.

Faiers or Keinath into successful breakaway, please
Frankly, regarding to my team I have very low expectations from this race, but that doesn´t mean I´m not looking forward to thrilling report!

I'd love to see Cunego up there, but it's hard to see past the top 3 of Madrazo, Spilak and Schleck. Perhaps Alarcon can spoil the party...

Top 40, on a good day, for Cattaneo is my reckoning.
I do wonder if he'll ever prove useful...

Forgot I sent Cunego here. Hope for a Top 10, but its a really strong field as expected, so Im not sure that will happen.

As said, a Dombrowski top 10 would delight me but we've got a fair bit of strength in depth here so I'm interested to see what kind of result the entire team put out.

Pretty good race with Henao in 6th. Also, nice to see Stancu so high in rankings.
But, what a ride by Majka

Wow, even more dominant than last year, Andy just loves Liechtenstein! Incredible result, by him, but also Kirsch in 17th, and others in the team finishing well too.
Very happy with that. Thanks for the report matt!
A shame if that puts a dampener on the potential PT title fight though. Some unexplainably bad performances from some riders in particular. Almost 5 minutes on Spilak is just mad.

Poor Alexis Dulin spend 9 hours and a quarter of an hour on his bike today.
Luckily our team was not here, or we'd have a sick bay full of riders
Amazing report, though! |
