Rund um den Eschborn-Frankfurt
The C2 HC calendar will have a day in Germany to please the sprinters… or maybe not. This race slightly resembles the profile of the more reknowned Milano – San Remo, only with ~100km less and the climbs appearing much sooner on the day.
Despite the almost unpronounceable name, this race has managed to hold itself in the MG for 6 times already, which is rather impressive. It’s actually somewhat confusing to follow its history, since it has had different ratings and raced in different divisions. Not only that but after being named Rund um den Henninger Turm, in the first 2 editions (2008 and 2010), it is currently called Rund um den Eschborn-Frankfurt, which loosely translates as Route of the escape porn and Frankenstein, true story .
2008 | C1 | Hilly | | Fabian Wegmann (Tinkoff) | 2010 | C1 | Hilly | | Angel Vicioso (Energie - Diesel) | 2011 | C1 | Hilly | | Philippe Gilbert (Pendelton’s Twicer) | 2012 | C1 | Hilly | | Fabian Wegmann (Trilux - Falke) | 2013 | C2 | Plain | | Manuel Belletti (Magna - Ryanair) | 2014 | C2 | Plain | | Lluis Mas (Bonsucro) |
As you can see only the last two editions are comparable to this year’s. Anyway, with a mass sprint and a breakaway win in the past two editions having decided the winner, you can tell that this isn't going to be a pacific day in the saddle for the heroes of the peloton. Nevertheless, let’s see who the top candidates are this year:
Name | HI | SP | Blaise Sonnery | 70 | 78 | Elia Favilli | 75 | 76 | Grega Bole | 74 | 76 | Bartlomiej Matysiak | 73 | 76 | Kazushige Kuboki | 72 | 76 | Kirill Pozdnyakov | 73 | 75 | Michael Mørkøv | 74 | 74 | Ioannis Tamouridis | 70 | 74 | Angelo Tulik | 72 | 73 | Simon Galle | 72 | 73 | Wes Sulzberger | 70 | 73 | Frantisek Rabon | 76 | 72 | Julien Simon | 76 | 72 | Vyacheslav Kuznetsov | 70 | 72 | Josef Cerny | 70 | 72 | Matej Jurco | 72 | 71 | Anton Varabei | 70 | 71 | Clemens Fankhauser | 75 | 70 | Mauro Finetto | 74 | 70 | Gracjan Lejman | 77 | 59 | Juan Pablo Forero | 61 | 80 | Anthony Lavoine | 60 | 80 | Cameron Meyer | 60 | 80 |
On paper Elia Favilli should be favourite, at least in my book. He combines the two main disciplines within his attributes and should be the rider to beat in case we have that sort of hard race but still for the sprinters event. In that scenario, though he’ll face tough opposition Grega Bole, Kirill Pozdnyakov and others. But the race can as well be ridden in favour of the less hilly-prone sprinters in which case Juan Pablo Forero, Anthony Lavoine and Cameron Meyer will become the riders to watch out for. In case of a break the favouritism gets more distributed. Obviously anyone can win this if the right circumstances occur, but Gracjan Lejman or Marc De Maar for instance could become dark horses.

Feared this race had been forgotten
Got so many options here and made sure to cover each scenario. Gonna be interesting to see what the AI does
Thanks for reporting this race

De Maar 100 km solo escape win in a 70 km/h crosswind by over 5 minutes.
Calling it.

nice to see that sonnery has the highest sprint stat, still surprised that he isnt considered a favorite considering his 71 in the mountains to back up his 70 hill stat and 78 sprint
but knowing my team, the race'll probably be a let down for us anyways |

@sgdanny: tbh I thought this event was only meant to be reported a couple of days later. It's a good thing I opened the calendar file today
@tsmoha: thanks mate, you're always there when we need you
@maxime: the favouritism is really arbitrary in this race imo. This could either go to a pure sprinter or a punchy sprinter if the hills are ridden hardly enough. The selection of the candidates was based on my perspective of things before the race. Also if you look to the bottom of the list you'll find three 80 SPR riders. Nevermind my lack of organisation.

A bit of a filler race for us. Little to no expectations at all.
So we better win!

Finally back to racing for Strava after the recent stage races. Nice to see Favilli named as a favourite, a win surely would help set the record in June. Langeveld has delivered when it mattered, I think Favilli can do well. Podium must be the goal.
Thanks for the preview, looking forward to the race!

Great German translation skills Gustav.
This has the feel of a breakaway win, but it is one of those roll the dice and see what happens type of races.

Nice that Cerny gets a mention, but we're going for Pelucchi (I hope!)
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Hoping that the hills drop the pure sprinters so that Simon can grab a solid result |

Apparently De Maar took my call a bit too seriously and forgot he wasn't actually capable of doing it.

This is a painful one, I had high expectations here and Pelucchi doesn't even sprint. Not to mention he was completely isolated. It's races like this that will cost me promotion
We need another one of those small buttons to rate posts: "Thanks for the great report, but f*ck this sh*t!"

Another great sprint from Forero there.
Time to forget about this and move on to the next race from the team perspective, but thanks for the report anyway

Didn't remember I was there.
With that field I honestly expected Moser to do something better than 8th but well... Ratto useless as ever etc. etc.
My team is always underperforming in the 1-day races...
Thanks anyway for the report Gustavo!

Novatek are freaking gods at classics and they don't seem to want to share
The team was controlling the race from the start and made sure Lavoine was in the right position. Sadly we must take what is our third 4th place in a classic, first Cristobal, then Zimnyanya and now here in Frankfurt.
Thanks for the report and liked it very much

Nice report though

I'm baffled but thrilled as to how Sarabia and Cioban managed to score top 10's in this one. Really did not see that coming
Thanks for a nice report
