Giro del Trentino
The Giro del Trentino goes into it's sixth edition and has been "downgraded" to C2HC status this year: quite a honour roll so far, with names like Riccardo Ricco (2011), Domenico Pozzovivo (2012, 2013) and Janez Brajkovic (2014) as previous winners. This tough race will now become one of the most prestigious in the CT and with 23 teams in this band, we can expect a strong startlist.
The opening TTT probably won't be the key for GC-contenders, but it's of course an opportunity to already gain seconds and maybe slip into yellow early on. Already on second day, we do have something like the queen stage here: finishing up the 'Monte Bondone' (20km, 7% average slopes), we will probably see the wheat separated from the chaff.
One flat and two more mountain stages will follow and so nothing's lost in this queen stage - in case you do not sit up in the bunch, of course..
The Startlist
The Favorites Leaders | MO | TTT rating | Other climbers | MO | Anacona | 79 | ** | Rienda Segura | 76 | Atapuma | 78 | * | Nieve | 76 | Martinez | 76 | ** | Zurita | 76 | Novak | 76 | ** | Hardy | 75 | Nakane | 76 | * | Weber | 75 | Kulhavy | 76 | * | Feillu | 75 | Berard | 76 | * | Løvik | 75 | Bagot | 76 | * | Malacarne | 75 | Sinelobov | 76 | * | Montenegro | 75 | Ndbri | 76 | * | Rudaskov | 75 | Soler | 76 | * | Landa | 75 | Hirt | 75 | ** | Chawchiangkuang | 74 | Peterson | 75 | ** | Simantirakis | 74 | Girardi | 75 | *** | Hasanovic | 74 | Koep | 75 | * | Rosa | 74 | Domagalski | 75 | * | Colex | 74 | De Greef | 74 | * | Rolland | 74 | Wang | 74 | ** | Morabito | 74 | Bontenackels | 72 | *** | | |
Two clear favorites: the "A class" - if you want so. Anacona and Atapuma as the best climbers, it's their race to lose. Behind those two, it's a pretty open fight, it seems.
Novak, Soler, Martinez or Bagot as the most promising names maybe. Of course there's also Kulhavy, who had a breakthrough year in 2014 - also Hirt already proved his strength in the Middle East Tour this year. Girardi probably with the best TTT-squad as his support, so the big goal to take the race lead on first day.
AkzoNobel with the best TTT-squad, but lacking any outstanding climber. Bontenackles/Wilman as their best GC-options, both would need some very special days to hang on with the best.
The Sprinters Sprinters | SP | ACC | Matthews | 79 | 79 | Sonnery | 78 | 73 | Volikakis | 78 | 82 | Davis | 77 | 74 | Sabatini | 77 | 74 | Sutton | 77 | 77 | Giacoppo | 77 | 75 | Franczak | 76 | 76 | Belletti | 76 | 77 | Balykin | 76 | 75 |
One stage for the sprinters, so a few notable names did decide to participate: Matthews, Sonnery and Volikakis as the favorites for stage three. They all will need this stage to be controlled by their teams. Otherwise they did go for five wasted race days.
Davis/Giacoppo with a rare opportunity to be amongst Top-5 contenders, same goes for Sabatini or Belletti.

Big race for those teams with eyes on the CT title here, big points on offer with it being a C2HC. DeLaval, Indosat and Alpina are the ones with strength in depth for this GC of the title contenders for me.
--
This has to be said - Massive screw up by Compal - Merida with the planning here? Yes it truly is MASSIVE! I guess they thought it was a flat race?
I haven't see the rankings yet but I am already feeling for the_hoyle's hopes of avoiding the bottom spot, as I see the Greeks scoring some points here and I haven't seen his team score much if anything this season.
--
Will make some predictions:
S1: AkzoNobel - Statoil
S2: Anacona
S3: Break (Bissinger or Strava rider)
S4: Soler
S5: Atapuma
Great Preview, the ideal blueprint, tsmoha. |

Martinez for podium, please. That'd be a great result for us given the startlist.
Great preview tsmoha

Anacona is huge favourite obviously but should be an interesting fight nonetheless. It would have been interesting see Signorini here on home soil but when Eden already have Atapuma here it might just backfire aswell. The ttt is really short though so doubt it will have much impact on the final GC.

Hopefully novak shows up during this race, and maybe a nice sprint by sonnery is awaiting us? |

Nah, not really. I had to decide between more depth or more quality during the transfer season, and I chose the latter. So with only 15 riders, and sometimes two or three clashing races elsewhere, there are always going to be some races where our squad seems weird for someone else, but I had to prioritize and with a limited amount of climbers, and many other climbing days to come, I chose to save them for more important races (for us) in Asia. I don't have that many flat races in my calendar, so Matthews, Sutton and the others are going to get many new chances.
That's why I strongly warned people about ranking me 1st or 2nd, cause it was a pain in the ass to assemble the race allocations. Even to get 6 in every race was hard, and I had to put a stage racier in a sprinter classic f.ex. In the end, I think we'll be fine anyway, hopefully a top 5, my only regret is that I didn't sign any stagiares to fill up my quota in every race and make it a lot easier for our planning.
So that's the reason, but I do agree it looks horrible on paper
-------
So, about the race, interesting preview tsoma, and we're really looking forward to stage 3 |

So Stage 3 is our main goal for this race. Giacoppo and Davis can do well. They just need to stay out of trouble and be at the front for the end.
Roe could get a top 15 maybe top 10 on GC which will be really good.

I'm really wondering that other teams brought such strong sprinters here.. I thought this would be a chance for Balykin to grab a podium once
Not really hoping for much at all, maybe Hirt can go for a Top10 given his latest performances - but if he fails that's totally ok with me as he overperformed in the last two races.
It would be nice to see Hasanovic in a break.

Being both our only March-race and Anaconas stage raace debut for us this is a highly anticipated race.
I expect the boys to make a good result, though I might have overestimated the importance of the TTT a bit when setting the team and prioritizing pure TT'ers over pure climbers.

Sent some alright riders, we could have some luck and do okay, but knowing my luck, probably some decent results but nothing special, still we don't have many climbers and I'm not expecting much from Domagalski.
Also bought Franczak here as I needed someone to fill the last spot and was hoping other people didn't bring sprinters.

Bjartne - You say that but didn't you send Gilanipoor and Lowe, both, to the ToME?
Well, anyway, I do think it is refreshing that you prioritise races such as the ToME over races which offer more ranking points.
Atlantius - Surely the TTT won't have any impact on the GC with that mammoth stage 2. |

Should be a very interesting race. Our first big goal of the season, hoping for a top 5 GC. Atapuma has some ok support and some alright TTers around him as well. Hoping we have enough depth to control the race, but I'm sure Alpina will want to as well. Best of luck to the other teams
And another lovely write up!

Yes I did, cause ToME was among our team goals this season, hence why I wrote "More important races in Asia for us" |

I really hope to get my first points here But the TTT will probably send Elta quite far behind the other favorites for the GC :/

We are DEFINITELY going to win the team time trial, and hoping to snap into the top 10 gc somehow. Hopefully this one is going to be break-free as we've had enough and my boyz never enter any. But yeah Belletti won't have chances in the 3rd stage anyway. Anacona for the win?
Thanks for the fantastic preview tsmoha

Our least important race of March. Still, Sinelobov is a good climber who I hope sneaks into the GC top-10. I do quite regret not bringing Velits though
