Vuelta a la Comunidad de Madrid
This mountain classic in Spain makes it's debut in the ManGame as one of the most prestigious in it's category for the Contintenal Tour: the C2HC classic would of course attract the divion's best climbers to take part.
175km in total, the profile ain't too challenging until the final 40-50km, where two not too long, but steep climbs await the peloton. The question is, where we will the first favorites trying to attack. Will they wait until the final steep kilometres or already on the penultimate ascend?
The Startlist
The Favorites MO | Rider | | | 79 | Arroyo | | | 78 | Iglinski | Rodrigues | | 77 | Quintero | Schwab | | 76 | Zurita | Esquivel | Txurruka | | Orozco | Kulhavy | Raisin | | Rodas | Rojas Villegas | Moreno | | Alizadeh | Castano | | 75 | Feillu | Nicácio | Camargo | | Colorado | Di Gregorio | Diniz | | Saggiorato | | |
ONCE lines up with an impressive bunch of climbers to support the top-favorite Arroyo on his clear mission to be the first winner of this race. This team looks like the one, which not only has the pressure to control the race, but also the skills to succeed.
Maloja's support for Iglinski ain't much worse though, as Schwab should be amongst the strongest here. But also Diniz and Dyadichkin (who made the Top-15 in Cartago - Irazu a few days back) will add some depth.
Siam's Rodrigues will also challenge for the win, most probably with Quintero (who did extraordinary well in Cartago, too) as the next most promising favorite on paper. His team Nutresa does also have some potential aggressive co-leaders.
Other riders like Txurruka, Moreno, Alizadeh or Zurita may hope for a Top-5 and aim for the Top-10. Let the climbing begin! |

Obviously hoping for a win by Rodrigues here. I hope the rather weak support compared to the other favourites won't be too much of a factor. |

This is our win goal.
With nat. bonus and if he is on a good day Txurruka is a match for everyone here, except Arroyo. So it will take many many things to go right if we are to take the win. However, we have seen how important the fighter stat is and few are more aggressive than Txurruka, hopefully he can put in an attack similar to what Kashechkin did in Costa Rica.
Anything below a top5 is a bad result for us here. I will be tempted to go on a little run for 5-6 miles and ditch my copy of PCM2013 if the likes of Zurita out-climb Txurruka in Madrid. |

Hopefully the Once domestiques and Schwab will sit up when Arroyo and Iglinskiy attack and won't chase down any effort Alizadeh may make to attack afterwards.
Something tells me a group of outsiders will place an early attack and get a decent gap, with one of them holding on for a top 5, with Arroyo taking the win from Iglinskiy.

Goal of top 5 looks oh so very achievable on paper, but following the trend of the season I'll be pleased with anything in the top 10, something that we will no doubt spectacularly fail at.

Duty race for us. Told our young guns: Théry Schir and Andrea Manfredi to go out and have fun with this one. Nice preview btw.

Well ONCE did alright...I guess..
Great report tsmoha, good race too although shame it wasn't tad more selective. Still most teams score about what's expected here.

ONCE with brilliant tactic. First having all riders doing the pace reducing it to the favourites only.
Then Iglinski taking over hoping to get rid of them. He can`t .
And all were waiting for an Arroyo attack but instead it`s Kulhavy and all were just looking at Arroyo.
Kulhavy already was strong in Middle East. Now also with a classic win. Really having a nice season.
A bit unlucky for Maloya that their support was not able to be as strong as ONCE`s. |

I was hoping some of the ONCE support would be dropped whilst reducing the peloton tot eh favourites but they were too strong and ended up dropping my riders instead. Still we got a 1-2 from the second group which suggests my riders had a good finish on them still and that they might have been dropped due to poor positioning rather then having nothing left tot keep up with.

Nice 1-2 for ONCE. Kulhavy was already surprisingly strong at Middle East.
Disappointed by Rodrigues 7th place to say the least. |

Mmm. Had been looking for a top 5 and scaping some additional points around 15-20th with Beltran and Masuda, so not what we had envisaged. 6th for Ochoa Quintero keeps the points ticking over, but a little underwhelmed by this result.
Congrats to ONCE on a great day out for them, and also a mention for our Colombian brothers at Alpina for a little bit of cheer in what has been proving to be a hard season.

Shame, as a goal race for us this was rather disappointing to finish outside the top 10. When the decisive move happened neither Raisin or Feillu had the legs it seems, so that was that. Was a gamble to bring both of them here to see how it would work out, but seemed like it wasn't the best idea after all.

Win goal goes up in smoke. So a climber with poor backup stats sets the pace for 5 KM and then has a burst of acceleration and takes the stage win, right. Right. Right. Right. Is there anyone on the continental level who is underperforming more than Txurruka?
Great report nevertheless tsmoha, can you keep it up? |

Thanks all for the kind words.
A kinda strange race with too passive favorites for me liking. ONCE though had the man-power to control this race, so they played it well here.

Ahh, so close... almost snatched a ranking point out of this one.
At least Remo Schuler can write in his diary: Ended same time as Swiss climbing hero Hubert Schwab. Andrea Manfredi did what he was asked for and we got out TV time (if the transmission didn't start to late).
Dominant performance by ONCE, congratulations. And nice read, thanks for the report, tsmoha!
