It's big in australia and it's sort of like rugby. That's about the extent of my knowledge.

I remember watching it, thinking that it was more crazy than rugby.

ok so begins the lessons on Australian rules football.

first off - the basics

Overview of the game

the game is played with 22 players - 18 on the field at one time, the four substitutes may come on and off as many times as the coach wishes. The main league is the Australian Football league which contains 16 teams.
Positions on the field:

content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/4/4a/300px-Aussie_rules_ground_positions_medium.png

Scoring

the goals look like this:

www.berlin-crocodiles.de/files/goalposts.jpg

6 points if you get it through the big posts - 1 point if you hit a big post

1 point if you get it in between a big + small post - free kick to the other team if you hit a small post on the full.

The Ball

www.aussiefavourites.com.au/cornershop/images/sherrin_syn.jpg

An unusual shaped ball which makes it quite hard to handle and kick if you dont know what you are doing

interesting ball fact - used to be made of pigskin

Basic Skills

Marking

www.droppunt.com/images/sampi3.jpg
Above is a mark - they are normally not this spectular - thus marks of this calibre are called "speccies"
A regular mark is when a player on either team catches the ball which has been kicked by either team - the ball has to travel for at least 15 metres and be controlled by the receiving player.

Kicking

www.velocitysports.com.au/images/athletes/alastair%20lynch/kick_straighton_small.jpg
Various people kick the ball in different ways but the ideal kick will have the ball spinning backwards end over end.

Handballing
www.nctigers.com/images/footy101/hball3.jpg

A handball is holding the ball in one hand and "punching" it out with a closed fist. - if this is not done properly you are penalised.

Tackling

www.aflcanada.com/images/news/jr_tackle.jpg

a big part of the game - tackles must be between shoulders and knees, force cannot be exerted directly into a players back and the player must be released after he gets rid of the ball. if a player is deemed to have had prior opportunity to release the ball and has been caught in possession then the tackling team is awarded a free kick.

Rucking

www.realfooty.com.au/ffximage/2007/07/01/svPORT,0.jpg

One of the more unusual aspects - after each goal is scored and at the beginning of the game to ruckman (usually 200cm+) compete in the centre of the ground. The umpire bounces the ball so it flies into the air and the ruckmen run up and jump - the aim being to tap the ball to the advantage of their teammates.

Spoiling

www.realfooty.com.au/ffximage/2007/08/18/GALL_DONS_SS3_gallery__310x400.jpg

When playing a defensive role it is most effective to spoil your opponents mark rather then trying to mark yourself- this is usually done by punching the ball away from them

The bump/shepherd

www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2006/06/07/wbFOOTYmilburn_narrowweb__300x385,1.jpg

The AFL has tried to get this out of the game recently due to nasty head/neck injuries however it still takes place a shepherd is when a teammate of the player in possession bumps an opposing player who is chasing his teammate in this situation they can pretty much go as hard as they like.

i have a bit more stuff but ill post it later

Wouldn't the Australians beating the Irish be International Rules though, and not Australian Rules ? Sorry for the kinda late respond Pfft

I can't stand AFL (no offence Wink)
And also, I think you're all thinking of Rugby league, it's slightly different to Rugby Union and much better Smile

I can't stand rugby (no offense) but it's one of the most boring games I've ever watched, and I was drinking beer while watching it.

Eden95
Well it depends where you live in AUS to what you prefer, if in Victoria it's mainly AFL and in NSW it's NRL.

Well, to wake this thread.
The Kings of Aussie Footie Hawthorne Hawks dominated their 3rd straight Championship. Angry
Well they from eastern Melbourne, so I don't support them. but respect their dominating the sport.

WHO CARES ????

I'm a Cats fan since birth and the Hawks are probably my least favourite team tbh, but I do have to admit that three flags from four consecutive Grand Finals is a total domination. Even the reserves are on fire at the moment.

This year's NRL Grand Final was about 500x more exciting for once, never thought I'd be saying that either Rolling Eyes

I care as I watched each of those games, because quite a few of my relatives support Hawthorn (although personally I'm St. Kilda) I generally like games with St. Kilda but don't really watch other teams and since we are bad at the moment most the games are on pay tv channels so I didn't really follow it this season.

Anyway, as long as Collingwood isn't winning I'm happy (apologies to any Collingwood fans but I can't forgive 2010 Pfft Angry)

I prefer cycling, soccer, cricket, etc. to AFL, but I certainly like it better than NRL or basketball (there's something I just don't understand about them Pfft)

This year's NRL grand final was incredible, surely one of the best ever. Even despite the fact that I strongly despise both the teams that contested the final, it was amazing to watch.

Anybody else see the final? Can't believe the dogs did it, was amazing seeing them just make it last week and then beating Swans in a tight game. Smile
