Tour de San Luis Preview
February 6-12, 2013 : America C1 : Argentina
7 Stages of almost everything, the only thing missing is a mountain but stages 3 and 5 do have a nice uphill finish though. The 4 flat stages should give the sprinters a good battle for the points jersey. But probably the most crucial stage of them all comes directly in the middle, the stage 4 20kms ITT.
The Top 5 Climbers/Punchuers:
Rubén Plaza starts his season by testing his legs on the hills and not the mountains, but he surely gets a leg up on everybody else when it comes time for the time trial. If all goes well Plaza could find himself on the top step with the the help of his teammate Jose Mendes.
Hollistar brings arguable the best team with a whole host of punchuers in Ion Izagirre, Alessandro Proni, and Carlos Betancourt. They are clearly the favourite to run away with the team classification, but it remains seen how they will work together throughout the course of the race.
Linus Gerdemann, fits the ideal package for this type of stage race. A top 5 should easily be in reach if all goes as planned for the Sram rider.
Carlos Barredo normally would be happy with top 15's but since none of the really great punchuers wanted to waste 7 race days, Barredo has a shot at a possible top 5 for AMEX. The same could be said about Kristijan Durasek who poses a bigger threat against the clock then Barredo. It's good race planning by both teams but now their riders need to execute as well.
Mikayil Krasnoperov can best be described as the wildcard, a pure climber by nature will try and prove the climbs are too hard for the traditional punchuers. Will be interesting to see how he fares.
The Top 5 Sprinters:
André Greipel, after a strong start to the season by winning Down Under Classic he is now on everybody's watch list now. Can he handle the pressure to preform?
Allan Davis, is on the other side of the story. After finish 3rd in the DUC he continued his podium run through the Tour Down Under and is still looking to break out the champagne for his first victory of the season.
Mirko Lorenzetto, isn't the fastest but he sure is the toughest. Speed bumps shouldn't slow him down at all so the harder sprint stages, like stage 6, should be in his favour.
Óscar Avelino, not only did Prio-Porto bring Plaza and Mendes, they make it a triple threat with Avelino. He will look to build on his win from stage 3 of the Vuelta al Tachira.
Danilo Kupfernagel, with the help of Jake Keough should be able to show the black and blue of the AMEX jersey near the front of the sprints as well.
The Top 3 TT Specialists:
ING are putting everything they got into this time trial by bringing USA TT legend David Zabriskie along with Dennis Van Winden. And if the climbs aren't that hard then Zabriskie could realistically be a threat to steal the overall victory as well.
Dominique Cornu is in the same boat as Zabriskie, if the cards align right then the Belgium could actually find himself on the podium with a great time trial. If not, well any points he picks up from the TT might not be worth the 7 race days.
Zakkari Dempster completes the very strong squad sent by Hollistar. If this team doesn't leave Argentina with a boatload of points then something had to go horrible wrong. This team on paper should be at the front of the race of every single stage.

Ouch. Not even been mentioned here.
I actually hope that Geschke will do well on stages 3,5,6 and 7. I hope he won`t have to wait for Cucinotta on the two flatter stages there.
At least I think these might be too hard for many sprinters. Davis and Lorenzetto might be the top favourites there.
My time trialists are supposed to get a top15 overall s I don`t expect big selection on the hills.
So goal must be 1-2 in the top15 and maybe even one in the top10 and 1 stage win.
EDIT: That said, I will most likely fail to even make a top20. ;P
First I had Boom in my roster, but it was the last race to fall out of his schedule when selecting other/more important races.

If Durasek and maybe Morabito can get a good GC i will be happy as i could do with some for my America Tour goal. |

Surprised to see Krasnoperov present, as he'll probably suffer on these short climbs. I might underestimate the MO ratio, though.
Hollister to dominate I think.

Stronger sprinters than i had hoped but it's looking good for Gerdemann. Top5 at least, maybe even a podium and a Top15 for Hudecek is the goal.

The only positive thing about this race, is that we can only surprise. It´s going to be tough, but we are going to try, and get the best out of this as possible.. |

Looks like the smart money is on a time trial expert - Cornu and Zabriskie are certainly decent enough for these types of hills.
But Plaza could be a dangerous wild card with the very luke warm bunch of hilly riders (seemingly in South Africa). The time trial though is relatively long so I feel he needs a bit more than the odd time bonus.
We shall see, we have had some unpredicatable racing in the PCT races so far.

Have quite high hopes for this race, a stage win is a must and I hope that Zabriskie don't fail too much on the hilly stages, so that he and the team and come home with a good overall result.

AMEXpc looks to get thier season started after a flame-out in Austrailia. This race looks to be a question of how selective the hilly stages will be compared to the TT stage. Many of the top PCT punchuers will not travel to Agrentina, this opens the door for American Dave Zabriski to use stage 4's time trial to launch him to a podium with Dominique Curnu right up there with him. Any of 3 or 4 decent punchuers could join them, including AMEXpc's Carlos Barredo.
Hollister has packed thier squad with point earning punchuers as they continue thier defense of the Americas Tour. With 4 flat stages several of the PCT top sprinters are in attendance but only Allan Davis and Danilo Kupfernagel brought alone leadout men. Will Aguilar or Keough be able to launcher thier man over the already proven, but without support, Andre Greipel.
AMEXpc sees Barredo as a top 5 threat for the GC and with the right situation he could just flat our steal stage 3 if he get into the day's breakaway. Kupfernagel with some solid pacing and two leadout men should be chanllenging for a podium spot on all of the four flat stages.
Stage four TT will be a rest day for all of the AMEX riders except Patrick Gretsch who will be shooting for a top 8, point earning, finish.

Cornu should be able to podium here of all places. If he can't do that then I don't hold out much hope for him this season. The hills don't appear to hold much danger and there aren't enough top puncheurs to really threaten.

Looking forward to this race, our GC leader Popkov is similar rider to mentioned Durasek and with good day in the TT and hills, he can maybe fight for late top 10, but top 15 is the goal. Together with some nice placements of our main sprinter Vasylyuk, maybe some podium, if the form is good.
Good luck to all

I have a stage win goal here. So that is a must for our team. Greipel will hopefully manage to pull that one in. Otherwise, the other riders will hopefully perform decently.

What a weird sprint this was. Thanks to Kaupas I guess.
And awesome 4th by Cucinotta. My mid level sprinters so far deliver this season. |

Just as I expected we weren´t able to do anything in the final sprint. But a breakaway like this, is were we supposed to be, so that´s quite disappointing. |

It is the wrong Eislers representing me!
I have Ingus Eislers, not Sandis...

That is a pretty good first day for me, I didn't expect Machado to get into the top 5 in the flat stages. Hopefully he can maintain this form into the slightly hilly, but sprint stages. Its going to be an interesting race, especially to see how much time is gained on the time-trial, and how difficult the hills actually are.

A disappointing stage #1 for AMEXpc. Kupfurnagel is lef to his own as AMEX cannot get thier sprint train formed. Kupfurnagel finishes 10th and out of the daily points.
Where the hell was Jake Keough? He was suppose to lead out Danilo but he's half way back in the pack.
Tommorow is another sprint day and we will need to perform better.
