FC BARCELONA
FC Barcelona is one of the most important multisport clubs in the world. Founded in 1898 by the Swiss born and Catalan adopted Hans “Joan” Gamper this is the third time the club tries in the world of cycling.
The first time FCB set a cycling team was in 1927. At that time they had a first class team with Mariano Cañardo Lacasta (winner of the Volta Catalunya eight times), Juan de Juan and Mucio Joseph Emmanuel Miquel (Spanish national champion in 1927). The team lasted for about 10 years because on 1939 all the Spanish competitions stopped because of the Civil war and at 1943 the team finally closes down.
In 2004 the idea of a cycling team was brought back to set a team of u-23 with the objective of competing the Tour de France in 5 years under the management of Melicior Mauri, winner of la Vuelta on 1991 and runner up of the WCRI on 1998. This stage didn’t end because in 2007 after some economic discrepancies and a doping scandal of some of the riders of the team, the team was disbanded.
Now on 2013 a new era starts for this historic section of the club. With a new management an a new methodology, this team wants to me the springboard of all the riders of the area and, given the time, a reference in the world of cycling.

@SotD
You know, back in 2004 when they set a new team I thought that this would increase the presence of cycling in the area. Catalonia despite of us having good riders now and then it’s not a powerful region because the lack of important teams (mostly because there is no companies interested) but a good background in amateur cycling. The problem is that most of the riders stuck in the amateur/semi-professional level or have to go to other regions to win their beans (tell that to a 18 yo who doesn’t really know what to do to his life...). So it was a pity that the team disbanded in 2007. This game now for me is a way to make my dream real.
@Vien
I will try to follow the FCB methodology in all the sports. Try to build the team from the bottom with Catalan riders, try to sign all the best Spanish riders available to solve the weakness of the team and finally if there is no other option, sign foreigners. Regarding foreigners, I don’t target any nationality in concrete.
@Mresuperstar
Thanks for the warm welcome! We will see each other on the TP then

Well, we dont have any Argentinian teams so you could have a good opportunity to try and find Cycling's version of Messi there!

I’m very happy to show you today the FCB goals for the upcoming season.
Some might think that is an aberration that the Barcelona Classic wasn’t included but, as you can see from the other goals, it didn’t suit our orientation at all. To the organization just let him know that our participation in the race is granted.
Seeing our three first goals you can be sure that we are willing to be a mountain powerhouse in the CT. Other areas of interest are the hilly races and some short GTs. We are currently evaluating the possibility of investing on one or two riders with some sprinting ability.
About the last two goals we think that are pretty connected. If we are able to secure on rider able to win the three first races, he will be able to secure a top 5 in the CT standings. The same applies to the team, if it can be lead by a potential Top 5 rider we might be able to compete to be in the Top 10.

It'll be hard to acquire a (CT-)dominating mountain rider this season with many promoted teams in need of a good moutain squad and with many pretty equal sub-par riders available, but this is a really likeable approach!

@TheManxMissile
Thanks!
@cio93
We'll do the best we can in the transfer period. It's true there isn't any go-to guy affordable for the CT teams but we want a rider able to be there in the critical moments.
@aidanvn13
We'll if you or me takes the tour... or a third one
@Spilak23
We have a similar approach and the same country. I preview a real fight for some transfer targets and also a clash in most of our calendar races. Good luck, you'll need it (muahhahahaha)

Squad Overview:
We have a bitter sour feeling about the output of the transfer season. We entered into it with three goals.
The first one was to have at least a 50% of the riders from the sponsor region. We feel we succeeded in this goal because 9 out of the 17 riders of the teams are home based.
The second goal was clearly signing Purito Rodriguez as a team leader. He is the star rider of the area and we really wanted to have him to lead this project. As the bidding went quite crazy we reconsidered our position and we signed Denis Menchov who is better than Purito in the mountains and stage races but we lost some power in the hilly stages. We are disappointed about not having him in the team but the outcome wasn't a real setback.
The third and last goal was to give our leader good riders to support him in all the terrains. We think that we have strong riders to compete in the mountains but we lack of a punchy bastion. We hope that this will be solved with our depth in this terrain.
As a conclusion, we are disappointed that we could get a real sprinter for the team think that will hurt us a lot during the season and also we feel we were too confident when shortlisting the young prospects. We don’t feel that we targeted high profile riders but at the end they were quite popular.
We might be kind of one dimensional team but we think that we are capable to surprise in most of the races we will participate.
And now, here it comes our team.
Riders presentation:
Jorge Abreu / 23 years / Youngster / Fighter
Jorge is not bad in any terrain but excel in none. His main virtue is his fighting spirit. We will use his fire and versatility in all the possible races waiting for his real potential to come up in the following days. We expect him to be a good help for the leaders and show himself in the right situations.
Adel Barbari / 23 years / Youngster / Fighter
This youngster from Algeria is also a good fighter. He doesn't have any favourite terrain but he's got a good punch for the last km of the race. We hope he will be able to slip in some breakaways during the season.
David Bartl / 22 years / Youngster / Climber
David is a well rounded rider. We are really confident that David will become a good rider when the road faces the sky. This season he will help our leaders in the pursuit of good results.
Sylvain Calzati / 34 years / Free element / Puncheur
Sylvain will bring some experience and fighting spirit to the team. He will have the necessary freedom to try to search for a victory at his own but also will have to help the leader if they need him at his side.
David De la Cruz / 24 years / Youngster / Climber
David is the future of this team. Born in Catalonia, he will become the soul of this team in the coming years. This year he will be helping our leaders in all the stages races and also he might have some opportunities to shine at his own.
Juan-Antonio Flecha / 36 years / Domestique / Cobbled classics
The team captain. He might be old but we truly think that his positive attitude in the road will help our team in archiving great results. He will also have the opportunity to shine in some cobbled races.
Xavier Florencio / 34 years / Domestique / Cobbled classics
Flecha’s brother of blood and a great domestique. The two are similar riders that will share the galons on the cobbles. Also he will be a great domestique in all terrains.
Eduardo Gonzalo / 30 years / Luxury domestique / Climber
Eduardo is a rider with a great experience, coming from the PT his role in the team will be to support our riders until the latest possible in every mountain stage. Also in certain races and situations he will have the opportunity to search for a victory at his own.
Jordi Grau / 32 years / Luxury domestique / Puncheur
Jordi ability in th short climbs is something we really appreciate in the team. He will have to support the leaders in the middle mountain races, but he will also have the necessary freedom to shine at his own in some races or stages.
Soufiane Haddi / 22 years / Youngster / Sprinter
Soufiane is our sprinting project. He will help Geoffroy in the massive arrivals and also we hope he will learn a lot from this professional riding experience.
Geoffroy Lequatre / 32 years / Free element / Fighter
This year we will give Geoffroy all the liberty possible in order to achieve some results in the races he participate. Either in massive arrivals or trying to win a stage from early attacks.
Denis Menchov / 35 years / Absolute leader / Climber
Our absolute leader in all the races he participate. Denis will be our main card to achieve our goals. His excellent climbing ability and his good TT competence, this well rounded with really good secondary stats and his vast experience will have to bring all the objectives closer to our hands.
Mikel Nieve / 29 years / Leader / Climber
Mikel will have to help Denis in some races being his lieutenant but he will have the chance try to get results in most of the races he participate. Excellent climber, we really hope he can get some nice results.
Eric Pedrosa / 23 years / Youngster / Fighter
Eric was really surprised to receive our call to be part of our team this season. We don’t expect much from him but he will learn a lot from the experience.
Alberto Rodriguez Oliver / 31 years / Domestique / Puncheur
Purito younger brother. He was recruited to the team for this punchy ability. He’s really capable to help our leaders in some middle mountain stages and why not, try to search for a victory at his own.
Jaume Rovira / 34 years / Domestique / Puncheur
Jaume has a great experience in cycling, he will help our team in the puncheur stages.
Jordi Simon / 23 years / Youngster / Climber
One of the best prospects in the team. He and De la Cruz are the future of the team. This season will be helping in the mountain stages and learning from the veterans.

Because the first races of the calendar have been played we start our monthly overview. This post will be updated once all the planners have been sent in.
The season is about to start and the races in January will help to enlighten the world about how the season will continue. FCB - Estrella Damm will participate in four races. The first one will be Clasico San Cristobal in Cuba, we will move closer to our base to participate in the Tour d'Algerie, then a long travel to Nepal to take part in the GP Kathmandu and finally returning to Spain, we will go to Valencia and participate in the Trofeo Luis Puig.
Clasico San Cristobal
Analysis:
The premiere in the history of this team will take place in Cuba. January is a good month to visit tropical islands. We expect high temperatures and humidity during the day and chilly and tasty mojitos at night.
The road of the course that will take place in the Artemisa province in the western part of the island is a hilly criterium of 187 km. To complete the course, the pack will have to go trough 5 laps in a circuit of 40 km with two hills. The goal is set at the top of the 2nd one, a hill of about 5 km around the 5% of slope. We think there will be a lot of breakaway attempts and there are chances that, if it’s composed of the right riders, arrives first at the line. If the pack is able to control the race, I think the real attacks won’t start until the last climb. It’s long and hard enough to provide the necessary difficulty to see some of them succeed. At the end, if a group arrives at the line together a tough uphill sprint will take place but I don’t think we’ll see a group of more than 5 riders fighting for the win.
Nieve and Grau will share the responsibility to have a nice result in this race. Grau with the explosiveness and Nieve with this good combination of MO/HI stat. At least one of them is expected to finish inside the top 10 riders.
Our team:
| Jorge Abreu | | Adel Barbari | | David Bartl | | Sylvain Calzati | | David De la Cruz | | Jordi Grau | | Mikel Nieve |
Tour d'Algerie
Analysis:
Tour d’Algerie it's a 5 days stage race. We really think that will be a lot of surprises in this flattish on the paper SR. The four first stages are marked as flat but we really think that the only one that will have a proper sprint will be stage number 3.
Stage 1 is marked as flat but having a 1st class mountain at 40 km of the line and almost all the rest of the race is a descent, we truly believe that the breakaway of the day will arrive first at the goal.
Same opinion we have about stage number 2, we think that most of the sprinters will be out of competition for the sprint because of the colosus of stage and the teams present won’t have the capacity to organize a reliable chase of the BA of the day.
The third stage of the race starts with the climb of a (on the paper) quite a difficult climb but maybe we are overrating the mountain because is marked as a 2nd cat climb. Even though, we think that there will be enough km to restructure the pack and organize the chase for the 2nd part of the stage.
The 4th stage has a 3 cat climb at about 50km to the end. You can consider it something that might not trouble the sprinting teams but a course is full of little climbs and this one can be the one that breaks the pack. Also, after this climb, almost all the km until the line are downhill so the chase will be a hard task.
The last stage is a no brainer. The strongest climber will be the first in the line and it will configure the overall classification of the race.
In conclusion I think that the race will be won by the first rider who arrives on the line of the 5th stage but the winners of the other 4 stages are a mystery and the sprinters will have a tough job to control the race.
Nieve will be our main card for the overall victory. A top 10 is a real possibility.
Our team:
| Adel Barbari | | Sylvain Calzati | | David De la Cruz | | Xavier Florencio | | Soufiane Haddi | | Mikel Nieve | | Jordi Simon |
GP Kathmandu
Analysis:
Kathmandu can be the place of one of the most epic battles of all the continental season. This hilly race is like a trip to the hell where every rider in it will try to play his card at the right moment. This criterium is held on a circuit of about 23 km and the riders will cross the line 11 times to complete the 254 km of this classic. We truly don’t know what to expect from this race because both hill and stamina rating will have a great importance in the output.
For this race we think that Grau is capable to achieve a top 10 place.
Our team:
| Jorge Abreu | | Adel Barbari | | David Bartl | | Sylvain Calzati | | David De la Cruz | | Jordi Grau | | Mikel Nieve |
Trofeo Luis Puig
Analysis:
Trofeo Luis Puig is a strange classic where everything can happen. The incredible mountain at the start of the course will allow a big group of riders to take off and tire the sprinters that might not arrive at the line with the fresh legs they hope. We think that a late attack from one of the best roulers of the peloton can do some damage if the sprinters are not able to control the race.
We think that Lequatre’s flat, sprint and fighter combination can provide some results if he can perform a successful late attack.
Our team:
