"One of the shortest stages in the 99thedition. But riders beware, it is a tough one! The course is simple: after the first thirteen kilometres from Albertville, the peloton will be hard pressed to find a single inch of flat terrain! The cyclists will tackle La Madeleine, La Croix de Fer and Le Mollard one after the other before the final climb up La Toussuire. Let me tell you, the final podium will start to take shape on the finish line here! Those who falter in this stage will get no second chances. The winner will not be known yet, but the losers certainly will."

Oh... I didn't realise the final kilometres weren't that steep.

Well, ASO at least did a good job in picking some mountains that do not favor pure time trialists.. but it doesn't matter, Wiggins is the freaking best TT in the world and the best climber in the race right.

Probably best stage this year? Maybe the one with Aspin, Tourmalet and Aubsique.
Anyway, should be good, with some more attacks hopefully.

Voeckler in the break again, for mountian points (why else would Rolland have attacked?)
is this the same side they climbed the Madeleine from in '10? |

Indeed. La Touissure is a perfect climb for Wiggins. Not really going beyond 10% at all, and that's what Wiggins like - constant pace and constant gradients.
Still should be fun hopefully
Adding to that, that puncture for Rogers got him 1h free ride. Should be fresh for tomorrow which is good for Sky again.

This could've been an awesome stage, if the final climb was something harder than this. La Toussuire is a really lame climb to finish the Tour's most mountainous stage on.
Remember the stage that finished atop here in the Dauphiné last year? Purito attacked out of a ~10 man group and gained a couple of seconds. In the second group, celebrating overall victory, was Bradley Wiggins.
They couldn't crack him here then, and there's no way they'll do it now. The climb is just too easy. Porte will be there a long way up the road, neutralizing every attack. Someone like Van den Broeck may once again gain a small piece of time, but we wont see any huge battle.

For you.

Talking about stage design or racing wise?

Day off tomorrow to watch it - hoping for some early attacks to keep it exciting throughout. Sounds like a good stage today though I only caught the excellent run in. |

If we ignored the riders and current situation, it is a good stage to look at, so stage design. I didn't really notice how weak the final ascent was.

On the other hand, the fact that La Touissuire is 'lame' should encourage riders to attack at Croix de Fer, maybe even Madeleine. At least I think that's the thought from ASO, exactly like today's easy climb and descent after Grand Columbier.
But I agree. Kind off lame. But we have seen Landis crack here and lose his Tour, so that's a possibility.

Gotta disagree then. Stage 17 of the Giro was possibly the best of the year. A bit better than the 4th stage of the Tirreno - Adriatico (if they hadn't cancelled the Passo Lanciano).

I'm pretty sure ASO made this route for Wiggins.
Economically they gain alot if a they earn a lot of attention in the UK. It's a relatively new market for them and they are now trying to milk it.
This is also why we shouldn't expect SKY to get caught. The economy in cycling needs the UK now just like it needed US back then.
If Rasmussen was Wiggins he would have won the tour. But because neither The Netherlands nor Denmark is a big market it was best to cut him out.

Would like to see Wiggins actually ride on the front himself and put the power down. See what damage he can do in the last 3km or so |

Usually I'd agree, but this is too good not to quote
I'm not going to Sky's-uh.....the winner's victory party on Sunday
- Pat McQuaid
The preceding post is ISSO 9001 certified
"I love him, I think he's great. He's transformed the sport in so many ways. Every person in cycling has benefitted from Lance Armstrong, perhaps not financially but in some sense" - Bradley Wiggins on Lance Armstrong
