Hi, I've just started making my own races, and I was wondering if someone would play the first two I made and give me some feedback. It's a TT and a mountain stage, and my plan is to make a Scottish (future grand) tour, in the highlands, there. The TT is quite detailed, the mountain stage could use some more detail, I think, but I'm not sure. (PS the mountain stage was the first I made, the TT second)
Thanks in advance, and I appreciate any criticism.
Here you can download the .rar file! (thanks to lluuiiggii)

I'll be without internet this weekend, so I'll try them then and tell you what I think after the weekend

Well, I just took a look in the Stage Viewer, there's some things you could improve imo. First, try to almost never use spline roads. I'm not sure if you've played stages with them in PCM 11 (not classics, rather mountain stages), they kinda suck because of the solid rider model Second, try to spend some more times working on the slopes. If you uncheck "snap objects to landscape" you can use the blue arrows to change the height of the road point, and thus make more constant and better slopes. Generally, avoid the very high slopes (e.g. >10%, mainly on ascents but also on descents). Lastly, for the basics of the stage, always fill the surroundings of the whole route with fields/forests (generally flat terrain = field, mountains = forests, but sometimes it's good to vary to have less trees, sometimes too much of them can be annoying). Also in this beginning you could focus a little less on the extra graphics and more on these "key" stuff (but they're nice as well )
But I say that the best way to have feedback on your stages is if you play them yourself. I am led to believe some stagemakers don't test their stages, because sometimes you get some weird/bad to play stages (mainly in Cyanide forum to be honest ). And keep trying, the more you practice the better you get

Thanks for the feedback! I actually didn't know how to arrange slopes, so thanks for telling me about "snap objects to landscape"! Also, I have seen the "spline" button, and it's always on, but what does it do, I'm not English-speaking so I don't have that word in my vocabulary, what is the use of it?
I also have played both stages once, and I was quite happy with the gameplay, but there were indeed lots of thing that can be improved (I liked my time-trial best though)
I thought it might bother people if there wasn't an open space once in a while, but apparently it's a must?
Thanks a lot about the advice, I'll keep working and I hope I'll have finished my Tour of Scotland by the time PCM 2012 is out! |

Okay, thanks very much in advance! I can use all help, so whatever you think, you can say. I've only just started making stages (since the day before yesterday), so it would be unlikely if I already had the better of it. |

If spline is checked, then some alterations will be applied to the whole road of that point (e.g. changing the road markers, road color, road voies (wideness), etc).
As for open spaces, you can do it with the forests setting "grass&flowers". That will at least give some flowers and bushes around the road which looks much better than nothing.
Another thing which is good is take a look in stages by the best stage makers in the stage viewer. You'll rarely see an area without anything at all. You can see several things as well, like the use of narrow/wide roads (wide roads are usually good in the beginning of a stage, so that it's less annoying to position the human riders in the P, and in the end of stages which could have a group sprint finish, so that there's space for everybody to move around), the slopes, etc. Also if you find a .zcts file of them, it's always worth taking a look to see details you normally wouldn't see in the normal viewer.

I play on low graphic settings, so I don't really care about the backround, but I agree with the slopes. Otherwise, good stages! Better than I could ever make.

I'll try to work on them in the weekend (or make new ones altogether), keeping in mind what you've all said. Thanks a lot for helping me out, it's not that easy, making a flawless stage which is also creative and interesting to play, especially when there is some specific vocabulary that I don't understand.
But I do hope you've enjoyed both the stages, in spite of the flaws! |

Stage profile for Mountain Stage in attachement
btw there's got to be an easier way to upload more screenshots in one post?

I don't think it's easier, but the only way to upload more than one screen in a post is uploading them to a host site (like photobucket or imageshack) and using the image code to paste the direct link of the picture, like this:

To be a first try, I think you did a good job with the slopes. In most other first stages I've seen, the profile has been completely uneven, with steep, short climbs and similar descents all the time, even though it should be flat.
Therefore I think you've got potential to create some quality stages.

I'd like to thanks everyone for their honest opinion. I've already made a much better stage. However, it seems that I won't be having too much time in the near future.
Exams approach, and then I have to prepare myself for a test to get admitted into the film university of Brussels. So I won't be making too many stages (I have to choose between playing PCM 2012 and making stages, can't do both). Though I'll keep practicing whenever I have the time, and later I'll try to make some great stages and upload them for everyone to play. Thanks a lot for the feedback! |

A bit late perhaps, but I played the stages as well. I don't really have something new to say, the second hill in the mountain stage was very annoying but the finish was cool to play.
I'll test the new ones once you release them

Can I ask why it was annoying? Because of the steep hill? |

No, but there wasn't really a long slope to attack and get a minute before a new downhill started. And the middle section was a bit too flat to get a lead.
