The Giro ended today, with Hesjendal hopping over Rodriguez, taking the GC. Many people found it a boring Giro, personally, I quite enjoyed it, especially the win of Rabotinni, that one km was just so exciting! And the great win of The Gendt was a beauty to watch (considering I'm from Belgium, and I love riders who attack from far out).
Kind of feel sory for Cavendish, one of the only sprinters who rides the entire 21 days, and then losing the jersey by one point, that's got to hurt. Rodriguez deserves it though, if you ask me.
What was your experience of Giro D'Italia 2012 and what would you do differently, as a rider/ as organizer?

At least one more long time trial (50km). Could've been at any time before the final mountains. Then we'd have seen attacks from further out.
Apart from the last three stages, I didn't enjoy this Giro much at all.

The Giro was crap. The worst I remember.
It needed a +50km ITT, either instead of the TTT or instead one of the flat stages in the first week.
The route, in general, was too backended, there should have been 1/2 high mountain stages before.
The final ITT should have been before the Dolomites (although I do understand why do they put it the last, even if a blind monkey can see it is detrimental for good racing) and longer.
As for the riders, they just need a TUE for testosterone, so they can grow a bigger cojones.

I share the idea of the final time-trial being before the Dolomites. Then, finish this with a criterium around Milan.

Then the favourites would wait even longer to attack, knowing that they don't need to distance their rivals in actual time. Everyone would act like Valverde.
Definitely no bonuses if you ask me.

Worst GT ive seen in my life.
And tour would be not better i think. Its crap.
Bring back bonifications. Or do 1 TT (25-30 km) with 1 MTT (Plan de Corones)

Make a tradition of Zoncolan... And about the sprint points thing.
I think it has something special that GC men can compete for points jersey.
And offcourse add boni's.

Far more TT kms, and all of them before the mountains.
That way people have to attack.
As proven by the GTs of the last decade, less TT kms means nobody attacks because they're close on GC and have too much to lose.

I think one of the mistakes from RCS was that stage 19 and 20 was so hard. They (the riders) just waited and waited.. and waited.. and waited. And then when they finally got there they was just too tired/not strong enough to do something - besides some few riders (like De Gendt).
Everybody was just waiting for those 2 stages.. and then they was not even good. failness.

I agree completely. That was the other thing I was about to post. It was just like the 2009 Tour: Ventoux on the last "real" stage = 3 weeks of waiting around.

Extremly boring Giro. One of the worst in the last thirty years of what i hear others are saying.
They should definitely have the last time trial before the last one or two mountain stages. I wouldn't mind seeing a longer TTT of 50-60 km's aswell.
The Tour should be much more fun then the Giro this year.

That's because all the climbing "specialists" attack only in the last 2 kilometers and they don't win enough time on guys that are clearly better in TT.

Because I started watching cycling in mid 2008, let's say I haven't got a lot of experience, but from 2009 onwards, this was by far the worst Giro. But fixing it is easy:
1. Zoncolan every year.
2. Gravel roads stage.
3. 50k+ hilly TT, like the one in 2009.
All of these in the first two weeks (with bonifications on every stage, obviously), and then let them bomb it during the last week for the win.

There was a gravel roads stage? They just decided not to race it. And disagree with the bonifications.

What TT specialists anyway?
Giro:
2009-> Menchov OK
2010-> Basso, not exactly a TTist, huh?
2011-> Scarponit, again, not the best against the clock
2012-> Hesjedal, bit better than Basso and Scarponi, but not a super TTist either
Tour:
2009-> Contador OK, but he's Contador, he dominated the mountains too
2010-> Schleck, super TTist, eh?
2011-> Evans, OK
Vuelta:
2009-> Valverde, a sprinter
2010-> Nibbles, not a super TTist either
2011-> Cobo, won it on the Angliru, beating the TTer Froome
So, out of the last 10 GTs, you have 2 of them (3 with AC 2009) won by the stronger TTists. Such a domination, eh?

more mountains in the beginning, longer and more ITT, but BEFORE the mountains, so the climbers have to attack sooner.
Definately this was the most boring giro in years because they put the most difficult stages at the end. 2,5 weeks boredom for 2 stages of fun |
