Is there a point in using a doctor?

I have never had a doctor in my staff because I get two injuries per season at most. Now I've gotten one, Gadret is out til mid-april (I'm in mid-march) and I'm wondering what the doctor actually does?
Is there any point in me paying the wages for him only to fire him once Gadret is healed?

Yes. I had Danielson out till mid July, but got a doctor and had him fixed up by early June and in okay form for Le Tour.

Well, it said that he would be back around mid-April both before and after I signed a doctor, so no change there.

It depends on the fame of the doctor and the severity of the injury. But did you assign the doctor to Gadret already? |

Yeah, you actually have to assign the doctor.

Whenever one of my riders got injured the e-mail was urgent and I was forced to assign a doctor, even if I didn't have one, which meant hireing one.
This means that right now I have 2 doctors, which I am gonna fire as soon as my riders heal up. |

i hire in a top doc for the injury, then release him after the rider heals up
but otherwise, there's no point
it does decrease the time somewhat, turns a 6week injury into a month out |

Hmm, hiring a doctor only when you have injuries. Hadn't thought of that, seems a little dodgy. Do you send your rider off to a training camp after you fire the doctor?
Putting snarkiness aside, my impression is that I suffer way less injuries then other AI managed pro tour teams. Most of them seem to have 1 or 2 rider injured at any one time, I have had 1 injury over the last three seasons. Am I just lucky? Certainly would make a doctor less of a waste of money if I ever had injuries. |

Where is the problem with hiring a doctor only if you have an injury? Having a doctor in you team even if there is no injury sound more fishy to me (especially if he is called Fuentes). But as with many more "features" of the game it is rather pointless, why would I need one doctor per injury, doesn't make any sense to me. |

As mentioned, I'm in my 4th season now and this is the first injury I've seen. Keep in mind that this one injury only came about when I simmed a race. When you think about the whole staff-section of the game, it's pretty dogy to say the least, especially the trainers.
I hired a doctor becuse it seemed like the right thing to do, but I might not bother... I was going to use him in the Giro, but I have so many other climbers I can easily find replacement.

I think the doctors are really intended to represent your entire ongoing medical staff/health maintenance costs. It isn't supposed to reflect the cost of a specific injury but the ongoing cost of maintaining the teams health and conditioning.
If they meant it to be a one time cost you paid when you had an injury then it could be set up like that (Ok, maybe I give Cyanide too much credit).
So it seems to me that hiring the doctor only for the injury is dodging the intent of the game. You can't buy health insurance only when you are sick.
If you want to gamble on not having a doctor then fine but you shouldn't then get the benefits when you do have an injury.
Agreed the whole staff section is dodgy. |

The doctors in PCM are pretty poor. They can only deal with one cyclist at a time.
Do all injuries result in the rider being in intensive care, needing 24 hour support from an assigned doctor? If not, then you would think that they could deal with several injuries and it would, therefore, make sense to hire one for the year.
As it is, the game makes you sign several doctors if you have several injuries at the same time (this has happened to me) and then you get rid of them because you can't afford to keep them all.
Maybe you should just be told what the injury is and the cost of treating it. You can then pay it or not, depending on whether it will get the rider back faster than not doing it. |

You miss my point. I know the game describes it as a doctor, the doctor is symbolic of your entire potential cost. I think using a simplified concept like a doctor as a stand in for a broader concept of health costs is pretty common in pc games.

If all your captains break their legs at the same time you suffer, just as a real team would suffer if that happened. Although I acknowledge the one rider treatment limit is inconsistent with my concept but then there are many inconsistencies.
Agree with Solano, that would make more sense. Like in FM at one point, the more you pay for specialist treatment the quicker they can recover. |

Yes, FM does these kind of things much better.
If you have an injury you can usually leave it to the physios, but if it's serious you can send the player to see a specialist. |

@Ulrich Ulriksen: I understood what you are saying, but it just doesn't make sense. He is called doctor, he can be engaged like coaches and scouts and he can only heal one rider. So obviously he IS a doctor and not a health insurance. Would be a pretty expensive health insurance for one person, btw. |

Lachi: Your point about the one injury is a good one, I acknowledge that.
On the other hand you have to acknowledge that if the game really meant you to hire a doctor to treat one injury and then fire him when it is over, quoting a monthly salary and having him have a "contract" with an "extend" option is odd.
Now maybe you put that down to Cyanide's choosing to use an existing contract system rather than implementing doctors correctly under the way you are describing it. That is a possibility. I have chosen to view it under my "health insurance" lens. |
