Back to back!

We returned to Italy for the second edition of Roma Maxima having won the first edition last year. Again Kenneth Vanbilsen would be our main guy and had the support of the entire team. Biermans and Van Aert rolled in every move that was made midrace.

Next we had Louis Verhelst really thinning out the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Roma/12.jpg

And finaly Stijn Joseph showed his value in his last season for the team. Once the team leader, now the perfect lieutenant. The hammer was brought down and most riders realised at this point, it wouldn't be for today.

And then it was up to out leader!

Yes, he makes it 2/2, turning our Italian co-sponsor estatic! We are in talks with the race organisation to rename the race Pizza Ullo presents: Roma Maxima, but maybe we need a few more wins for that. Either way, it's a victory we need to open the 2019 count!

Amerika ist wunderbar!

The first time we entered this race and it didn't disappoint. Only for Fernando Gaviria it was a bit of a bummer, as he came really close to his first win but always just fell short.

Manuel Senni won stage 9 after an impressive uphill sprint and would eventually finish inside the top 10, a great race for him!

Then there's good ol' Daniele Dall'Oste. He came here with his usual free role and gave us two stage wins and the mountain jersey. Another extraordinary performance from him!

All in all this was the great performance we needed to keep us another year in the Pro Continental Tour!

Normally I try to do everything in character, but I'm just so pissed off at Gaviria's wage demands I don't care anymore. A rider that has yet to deliver a win for us, only scored 127 points last year suddenly wants to be payed like a superstar. I can understand where his 600K demand comes from if you're looking at his stats only, but completely disregarding his total lack of results is ridiculous. Combine this with Oomen and a few others maxing out (but he actually has the results to back up his 350K wage), and you can see I'm pretty much bankrupt. So to any new manager I can only say, don't play the long game, the system punishes you for raising your own riders.

So anyway, Lierse - Pizza Ullo is forced to trade all of the following riders for useless 50K riders:
Josef Cerny
Danielle Dall'Oste, the legend
Gianni Moscon
Matteo Pelucchi
Tom Van Asbroeck
Zico Waeytens

I can see your frustration, but to be honest, Gaviria is the only rider with 79+ OVL that's under 500k in wage. He's a superstar in the making and all sprinters seems to have had high demands in the renewals this time around. Having so many good riders on a PCT budget is hard, but I hope you can turn it around and have a great season with many newly maxed riders. With so many great riders it would be awesome if you could push for a spot in PT.

Just sell Gaviria if his demands are too high.

I thought the system saved you when you relegated to CT?

So you want that because you developed those riders, you don't have to pay their value?

Again, I can understand it looking at his stats only, but being just maxed out and having done nothing last season, it's just too high. You pay a rider for the results he gets, not the results he can have in the future.

Here's some stuff I looked up, comparing to Gaviria's 490K:
- He wanted double of what my star riders Vanbilsen and Van Asbroeck get, despite those two having scored so much for me in the past.
- Aside from the mutants Bewley and Demare, Gaviria with 81 has a higher wage than every 82 sprinter, while all of them outscored him massively.
- Guarnieri settled for 360K, despite his great sprint performances for Delvaux
- Ben Swift, the great MG legend Ben Swift with 83SPR, settled for 440K
- Kump, ex WC and 77 hill for the same SPR stat, only 420K
- Lo Cicero at 84 SPR, only 375K

There really no way you can defend this system, completely missing the balance between stats and results.

If you do a regression model on OVL and wage, the model predicts Gaviria's wage to be above 550K, so this probably isn't as bad a wage as you think.

I beg to differ. Remember that the resale value of a rider is probably at it's peak when he is newly maxed, and if you were to sign Gaviria from FA now, you'd probably have to offer a much, much higher wage than 490K.

Anyway, it got a bit lost but the main news is that these riders are available for trading:

Josef Cerny
Danielle Dall'Oste
Gianni Moscon
Matteo Pelucchi
Tom Van Asbroeck
Zico Waeytens

Selling Gaviria is not really an option after setting my goals, but thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah, as a team that has won the PT with their three best scoring riders having been signed at lvl1 (who then immediately had to sell one of them to clear cap space...), there surely is a way to make it work, and I still believe you're not far off that path if you can play it right going forward.
One of the main factors in that is being confident in your decisions in the past and stick to the plan through tough times.

Gaviria can become the dominating sprinter of the next generation with that natural 84acc, and the pieces you'll be able to keep around him can absolutely help you get to PT eventually. Keep believing! Smile

I think I might throw in a not completely uselesse 50/55k rider for a trade... Let's wait and see Smile

Sounds to me like MG Gaviria is following the lead of RL Gaviria, who has been already earning 2mn at Quick Step when the only thing he did was beat Cav in a bunch sprint in Colombia in the early season

I am sure Pizza Ullo will prevail and manage fine despite their overpaid sprinters, best of luck

Exactly... IMO, building from the bottom-up is the way to go. But the difficult part is parting ways with talents you (in your head) saw leading your team to make room for the more obvious leaders. In my situation I had to let go of Jens Keukeleire, Laurent Pichon and Yoann Paillot because they maxed out - despite having done nothing particularly. I also had to let go of Ricco who was 4th in the Giro the season before. And honestly - they were replaced with scaps to get to the minimum amount of riders.

Unfortunately it has always been difficult to keep a big amount of maxing riders in the same season - especially for those teams planning to promote and then missing the cut.

Your case is extreme because over half a team maxed at the same time. THAT is probably not the best solution, but looking at the wages of your team I honestly can't see any major issues. I would say Dall'Oste and Waeytens aswell as your sprinters Bonifazio, Pelucchi and Mareczko are much worse than Gaviria.

The latter couldn't be picked up from the FA pool for less than his current wage - I'm pretty sure the others could.

To be fair, it's a lot easier to manage great young riders maxing in your wage cap as a PT team, so I wouldn't take the teams you guys are listing as evidence of replicable success. From that position, it's definitely worth it because it's easy to still build a competing team around them. Harder for a PCT team and impossible for a CT team.

Knowing that OVL trumps all else in renewals, I don't think his wage is necessarily out of this world high. But it's certainly extremely difficult to manage and build around, and will mean sacrificing elsewhere, which is unfortunate. That you will be losing other good talents is especially heartbreaking.

Best of luck making sense of this all in transfers!
