IMPOSSIBLEEE PHILIPPEEEE! Grin

Also, what a stage. I disliked Contador before the season started, but since I watched a few interviews and watched him race this season, there is no doubt for me, that he is the GT racer of the post-Armstrong era. That was really payback time today.

Also Hesjedal and Krujijiswijijk doing well.

Have you ever thought he wasnt? I mean, GT-riders have pretty much come and went ever since: Vino, Basso, Evans, Wiggins, Andy etc., but none of them have had close to the consistency as Conta. Only one in terms of that is Nibali, but Contador is at least one class above imo.

If you know why Armstrong was the GT rider of a decade, it does not shed a favourable light on Contador though. So I am not sure what I have to make with your comment as you started with not liking Conta.

Just caught up with today's stage, really entertaining one which had me guessing all the way through.

Astana really getting their cummupance here in a big way. Of course they are unfortunate they are up against Contador at his best. Top performance from him no doubt and entertaining too.

However cannot help but think this Giro what a shame it is that we will see a tired Bertie at the Tour, the excuses from the Conta sycophants will already be stocked up. let us remember he is older than Froome, Nibali, Quintana, Aru so comparisons of career stats at this stage is a little worthless.

Hesjedal asks Contador to come through and do some work when he has a teammate on the front

To be fair, Hesjedal and Villela were relaying, so Hesjedal was working too. Wink

Wow, Hesjedal has been the king of pacing himself this Giro. Even last year when he was supposed to share leadership with Martin and his form was bad, he would always come back after being dropped. i remember the stage with Quintana.

The reason he's been unsuccessful in the race has been mostly due to lackadaisical riding in the first week, getting caught out in splits. And it didn't help his cause that Garmin were working for Formolo for a while after that.

I really, really love the racing int his Giro so far. Even on breakaway stages I cans it and watch it on my DVR after school without fast forwarding. Even though Contador has been the best, it's completely different from Froome domination. He does it himself, not using a train. The favorites are never afraid to attack, and the outsiders can stick with them on a good day. It's going to be hard for the Tour and Vuelta to beat this.

That Monte Ologno climb was incredibly beautiful to watch. Hesjedal really impressive, it's a shame he (got) ruined his chance for the podium in the two past Giros in the first week already. Not a supporter of him but he's really always an inspiration in the Giro.

I love it when Contador does his long range attacks. <3

The stage has started, but it's never too late for a late preview Pfft

Stage 19 is upon us, and takes us on a scenic tour through the Valle d'Aosta, an area not visited since the riders climbed Cervinia in 2012 and really very underused in general. The winner that day was Andrey Amador, who now finds himself in a completely different position, fighting for at least a top 5 GC place if not a podium if things go well, although this is probably unlikely. However, today's stage is much harder and better designed that the borefest we saw in 2012, with three long typical Alpine climbs. First, the riders will have to negotiate 150km of flat roads before they hit the climbs, long enough to be a stage in its own right! The first climb of the day is Saint-Barthélemy and it starts of very steep indeed before leveling out a bit to reach a 6.7% average gradient in its 16.5km. However the average gradient is diluted by some flattish sections and even some descent, and there are several kilometres at 8%. It is certainly a tough climb and we shall probably see quite a reduced peloton at the top of it, judging by the way the race has been ridden so far.

Almost straight off the descent we come onto the Col de Saint-Pantaléon, exactly the same length as Saint-Barthélemy but with a slightly higher average gradient - 7.2%. This is a more consistent climb, despite a little patch of 12% about 3/4 of the way up, and is the only climb today that is steep near the top. With the top of the climb only 28km from the finish (7km closer than the Mortirolo was to the finish on Tuesday) we could well see some attacks, if not necessarily from the big guns, near the top of this climb.

A short descent brings us almost immediately to the foot of the climb to Cervinia (in fact, a bit of the way up the climb, compare today's profile with that of 2012, where it was tackled all the way from the Aosta valley, today we join the climb about 8km in at Antey-St.André. The climb to Cervinia itself is long and boring, 19.2km long but only averaging 5%. Nevertheless there are some steep sections in the middle which could be conducive to attacks, and since the last 2km are basically flat, one will need to attack beforehand to gain time. Hwever if we see the riders waiting until the last 2km on a profile like this we are back at 2012 levels of racing, and that's unlikely judging by the way this Giro has gone! Although the first 150km are boring, the last 86km are well-designed, with barely any of the dreaded valley roads in evidence, meaning the climbs follow quickly one after the other. At 236km in total, today's stage is the second-longest of the Giro, and coming after such tiring racing as we've had, is sure to find some riders out. Should be an exciting stage.

Thoughts on the race itself and the riders? Although many people are probably looking towards tomorrow's stage today is equally important and I foresee fairly large gaps. Of course we will see the latest development in the interesting situation at Astana, whether they decide to work for Landa, Aru or both - we saw that they appeared confused yesterday. Amador will be a rider to follow - can he be urged on by the memories of three years ago and take a step towards an unexpected podium place? And Hesjedal too, he would be a safe bet for 2nd place in this race if he had half a brain, but no, he is seemingly lacking in this capacity and so languishes 13 minutes behind. Personally I think the KoM battle these last days should be fascinating to watch - Kruijswijk has just 1 point advantage over Intxausti, and 19 over Landa, all three of them are in with a great shout and much will depend on how many points they can secure today. But if someone goes over the top of all three climbs in first today despite not having scored a point yet they would surge to the top of the leaderboard!

Really? I don't understand that

While I, on the other hand, don't understand those who goes on about doping all the time. Do you really believe that the only ones who are doping are those who test positive?

Unless you believe this, it makes no sense to complain about the likes of Contador while cheering for other elite riders.
