Came home, looked in the thread and had to immediately watch the stage. Damn it. Contador loses for the first time a leader's jersey in a Grand Tour. In a crash. On a pointless stage of all possibilites. But then again, it will only add to the myth when he gets it back right the next day.
Porte with another huge time loss. Might get bashed for saying this, but he just misses the edge you need as a leader for a Grand Tour. Good for one-week races but the few seconds I've seen of him today he has already closed this chapter of Giro. I mean come on, after Wheelgate Porte should demand a guy next to him at all times...
What is missing for this Giro is a legendary stage, much like Fuente De, Galibier 2011 etc. but I'm sure we will get it soon enough. From tv viewer perspective, there are no filler stages. Even stages that look like it before end up with some extraordinary. I also like that the narrative of this Giro, it is always on the up, tension gets higher and higher. Completely different to Tour last year, where everything was amazing in the first week (Yorkshire, Cobblez, Crashes) and collapsed and then lots of filler and boredom.
No words for LottoNL by now. I hope Van der Poel will never join this bunch of crash magnets, they'd suck out all his amazing bike handling and replace it with something horrible dutch-lottoish that would probably ruin his talent in the long run -.-

Uran is my pick for the win, he was on antibiotics at the start, so if he can pull some time back today, I think he can do it. For Porte and Aru we'll see after the TT with their positioning.

If Porte can make the best time trial he ever had made, can he come back? |

I will make a bold prediction and say Contador will TT and take lead back. 60 kms is large distance even for some established TT specialists, and when you add 2 hills it becomes even more difficult. That too after 1 and half week of difficult racing. Only established stage racer like Contador can thrive. Let's see. |

Well yesterday I said Aru was done now he is in pink, but you can hardly say he really earned it.
Still it has added an interesting dynamic.
Uran is indeed a danger an here, possibly a chance for Cataldo maybe? Contador has the chance this weekend to put bug stamp on Astana, he could do with taking it.
Porte I feel has been a tad unlucky, but it could be worse look at poor Pozzovivo!

Greipel and Henderson out of Giro. No surprise really, though one stage win wasn't enough for Gorilla he says. At least he still stayed longer than Kittel.

EDIT Matthews and Boonen out of Giro too. Uh, Tommeke, did he even try smthg? sigh

Thank you RCS for placing a rest day instead of the Mortirolo stage on Whitmonday, when there's a holiday for me and many others... gosh. Worst thing, I was actually pretty sure for the past weeks that I could see that Giro stage in full -.-

Contador gaining 20 seconds on Aru in a TT is a bold prediction?
Quite a hard stage to call - wet and windy conditions and a TT that is longer than anything any of the riders have ever done unless they raced in the Giro 6 years ago. Stage honours depends on who is prepared to go full out for the win - someone like Kiryienka or maybe even Zakarin ( ) would be a decent shout if they went for it but I'm not sure. With regards to GC also quite unpredictable: can Uran pull out a TT like he did last year or is he not on that form? Aru is a big question mark - lost 3 minutes to Uran last year in a TT that was almost 20km shorter than this, but apparently his 'TT position has improved'... take from that what you will.
One thing's for sure, gaps will be massive. 2009 TT was of very similar length but much hillier, so the climbers will lose more time here. Landa for example could lose 4 or 5 minutes to Contador and Uran.
2009 Cinque Terre TT for reference:

Only one thing to do, then.. you somehow caught a cold over the night. Classic.
60 km ITT! I could honestly see Urán in pink which would be good for the race since Porte more or less is out now it seems. Needs the third wheel so it doesnt get too tactical between Aru and Conta. I have absolutely no clue about the stage win tho, Urán would be my best guess since there dont seem to be too many specialists in this field. |

How is that bold at all? I believe 90% of the cycling fans believes that Contador will take back Maglia Rosa after todays stage.
