I read an interesting article the other day.
To win as many medals as possible, the most important factors are :
- being a large country (in terms of population)
- being a rich country (in terms of GDP per inhabitant)
- being a communist country
- being the home country
I can see where USA own Canada and Mexico here, but I can't really see why NL own Belgium that much. |

USA only meets 2 or 1 of those.

I hate USA's attitude towards the Olympics. They boast constantly about how many medals they win. Yes your athletes are good but there's nothing to be surprise by.
You're 350 millions, you have a lot of money put into sports, you have all the best training facilities and you have the NCAA. All of these things are great and other countries should do the same but it's annoying to always have an american saying: "Oh you got a silver medal? We got 5 gold today!!! MOUAHAHAHAHAHA USA USA USA! We're so much better than you"
So basically, i just wanted to say that it's just normal that the USA have more medals and it's nonsens to compare yourself to the Nertherlands (btw, they beat you by far in Medals/population ratio. Like many countries also.)
PS: Nothing personal baseballlover312 |

When you look at the size of the teams that the USA and China both sent to the Olympics then it is pretty obvious that they are 1st and 2nd in the list
If they sent lee athletes then they would be somewhere between 5th and 20th imo |

We got more gold medals than Sweden! SUCCESS!
Spoiler Yeah, yeah, I know they got 18 medals overall and we got 4. I also know they took 1 gold and we took 2, so don't bother pointing that out!

Yeah I've never really cared for medal counts. Usually the only team I keep a curious eye on are the hosts.
The performances speak volumes more than the statistics at the Olympics anyway. |

Yep, I've never seen that in Germany at least. Are there really countries that rank that way first?

The medal table usually reflects the size of the country anyway. There's a reason why the USA, China and Russia always are in the top 5 with the odd country poking its nose in.
It also helps to take like a gazillion medals in 30 different styles of gymnastics and swimming

Because Indias governmewnt gives Jack sh*t about their representation in any sports other than cricket. Thats why they put most of the sports funding into cricket and the rest is then subdivided into the other areas. And as we have seen with germany this year: If the funding isnt distributed well, you dont do to well in a variety of sports...

its true
the influence of a home crowd is never more obvious than at an olympics
Why does it matter who tops the medal table, the olympics is all about taking part and giving your all for your country ... at least its suposed to be

Probably the biggest contributing factor to the USA's medal count has been Title IX legislation. In short it means our schools have to spend equivalent money on women athletes as they spend on male athletes. Our ladies have been crushing it and they surely wouldn't be doing so well if they didn't have the opportunity to take whatever sport they are doing past high school and into college.
Until we start winning Table Tennis I won't be satisfied though. I better get started
In a few months we'll be back to ignoring our Olympians, following sports that we made up, that only we care about, calling ourselves "World Champions" when we play the finals and then complaining how "soccer" isn't a sport.

In the Netherlands you have to fight hard to even get a free track to run, or a free swimming pool to train in, without having to deal with recreational users there. Pretty pathetic... Somehow they still picked up 20 medals and 6 gold. |
