Good signing...and very good result with Impey.
I agree with baia! Impey´s results are quite good and your new trainee might be a great transfer Good luck for the last Giro stages!

Yes. I do not know how many variants the Tour de France have, but at least, this tour with the Arenberg-stage will return. And if this guy is really that big talent who can win the Tour, then it would be a shame if he always lost 10 minutes there...
@All
Thank you all for the comments, I am always happy seeing that you follow my story What do you think, have I signed to many young rider (Matthew Nicholson (stage races), Preben Horemans (puncheur), Georg Nennesson (Sprinter), Randolf Dreßel (Sprinter))?
Sorry, I was on the move the whole day, so the stage report will follow tomorrow I already played the stage, and I can already say that it we were not very successfull...

Yeah, I was checking now too see how much TdF contenders have on cobblestones and indeed they all have 62+.
And I hope that "not very successfull" is not related to the lose of the maglia rosa, only a few seconds =(

That is not a major problem IMO. Every time I have played this stage (in career or single stage) all the favourites have arrived in the big pack. Since none of the favourites has 70+ in cobbles, they are not able to attack out of the pack, and the favourites who have bad cobble stats (ex. Cunego, Antón...) nearly always finishes at the end of the pack or losing very small amounts of time. The only guys that can pick up time in this stage is the northern classics riders.
But that is how I have experienced it, it might be different for you.

You'll see...
@Pellizotti2
For me, it works if I make a high pace. Armstrong has a better cobblestat than most of the other GC contenders, so he do not drop as fast as the other rider... Hopefully it will also works here in the story.
Depart in Brescia.
Pisogne.

The peloton reached the Passo del Mortirolo, and after only a few kilometers, Nibali accelerated (but did not attack). Levi followed him. Behind Gruppo Maglia Rosa we see Tiago Machado, who felt very strong and rode away from the pack.
Gruppo Bellotti;
+2'37" Thomas;
+7'07" Lloyd, Fischer;
+16'07" Deignan;
+17'39" Nibali, Leipheimer;
+18'46" Machado;
+19'37" Peloton.
Nibali and Leipheimer rode hard and caught Deignan soon. And Nibali decided to attack! And now my mistake which will decide the whole stage: I believed that Levi would be able to close the gap only with 87% dot... Well, he was not...

Nibali at the downhill. We hoped that Levi would be able to roll up to Nibali at the downhill section, but this plan failed, too. Vincenzo even build up the gap... (Remember:Before todays stage, Vincenzo was 4th overall, +1'25" to Levi)
Gruppo Bellotti;
+5'47" Thomas;
+7'39" Nibali;
+9'01" Leipheimer;
+10'06" Lloyd, Fischer;
+11'31" Garzelli, Scarponi, Deignan, Spilak, Machado, Basso, Paulinho;
+12'39" Sánchez, Pozzovivo;
+14'27" Gárate, Seeldraeyers, Pinotti, Plaza, Cataldo, Moreau, Bruseghin, Mollema;
+14'52" Gruppo Wiggins-Cunego
Whats going on? Vincenzo Nibali reached the final "climb" to Aprica, nonetheless he can gain more and more ground on Leipheimer... Will he ever get tired?
Gruppo Bellotti;
+4'00" Nibali;
+6'03" Leipheimer;
+6'29" Thomas;
+9'03" Garzelli, Spilak;

+12'41" Gruppo Wiggins-Cunego-Martin
Craig Lewis opens the sprint for todays stage win.
Gruppo Bellotti;
+1'19" Nibali;
+4'03" Leipheimer;
+6'40" Thomas;
+7'00" Garzelli, Spilak, Paulinho, Machado, Scarponi, Basso;
+8'26" Pozzovivo, Deignan;
+8'59" Sánchez;
+9'41" Bruseghin, Mollema, Seeldraeyers, Pinotti;
+10'04" Moreau, Dyachenko, Plaza, Gárate, Cataldo;
+10'48" Gruppo Cunego-Wiggins-Martin
Marco Marzano wins ahead of Bellotti and Lewis. 17 seconds later, Kessiakoff, Vorganov and Wegelius came in.
The rider of the day, Vincenzo Nibali, came in with a residue of 1'13". Strong performance by him today, which will bring him La Maglia Rosa.
Leipheimer cames in, +3'47" to Marzano, +2'34" to Nibali. At the last kilometers, he even closed the gap a bit, nonetheless it does not reach to defend the jersey. After 15 successfull days with the leader jersey, Levi lost it today, probably only because I made a mistake not to caunter Nibalis attack...
Stefano Garzelli, Ivan Basso, Sérgio Paulinho,, Tiago Machado, Simon Spilak and Michele Scarponi, 6'12" after Marzano passed the line...
After Leipheimer probably the biggest loser today: Luis León Sánchez passed the line 8'11" after Marzano...

Congrats to Nibali! Bad result for us, Levi had actually a shape of 98 points, and had a daily form of +5 - there could not been better conditions to defend the jersey... Nonetheless we failed.

Great ride by the whole RadioShack team. Not easy to gain 3min on Garzelli, Basso etc.
So a shame that Nibali was even stronger and you lost your jersey.
So obviously Nibali wins the Giro in at least 3 different stories now

Arghh, I have to correct myself..it was the 19th stage so it will be pretty hard to gain over one minute to Nibali! Too bad but you never know what is going to happen...

I think that even if you had countered Nibali's move, Leipheimer would hit the wall before he and he would still build up a gap. When they start increasing the gap there's no way to get them again. I'd really love to see the AI rider energy bar in these stages...
A pity this happened when Leipheimer had +5 of daily form and fitness 98..... can someone please do another blood test on Nibali please?? If the last time trial was a bit bigger... awesome ride on the Giro so far though, 2nd and 3rd!

Thank you all
I agree, Nibali dominates in almost every story But maybe it is still not to late to stop him. If Levi has luck and gain some time, at least something about a half minute, then he has still a chance with the time trial in Verona...

Giro d'Italia
Stage 20: Bormio - Ponte di Legno/Passo del Tonale, 177,1 km
A few days ago, I said that the Zoncolan-stage is the hardest mountain stage of the Giro d'Italia 2010. Well, I was wrong. Todays stage includes two really hard and long climbs, the Forcola di Livigno (18km; 7,1%) and over the highest mountain in this years edition, the Passo di Gavia (24,9km; 5,6%). The final climb, the Passo del Tonale (12,1km; 5,2%), is not to underestimate, too. Only a really good climber can win today, and if we are confident, it will be really hard today to get the maglia rosa back, if it is not impossible.
Team goals:
- Attack and gain time on Nibali (Leipheimer)
- No time loss / Help Levi (Paulinho, Machado)
Favourites: Vincenzo Nibali, Ivan Basso, Michele Scarponi, Levi Leipheimer, Stefano Garzelli.
My tip: I really hope that Levi can gain some time, so that he has a chance to get the leader jersey back with the time trial, but if we are realistic - Vincenzo Nibali is probably unbeatable...

If you can't regain the lead with Levi, make sure Sérgio finishes in the podium.

Thank you for the support Finally, everything only get more worse... But look yourself...
Depart in Bormio.
Until now, we always see a breakaway-victory on mountain stages, so we send José Luis Rubiera in the early group, we still have not any stage win so far (except the TT, and it is also a little gift to Chechu because he has make a great job as helper in the Giro so far). Other rider in the front group: Mario Aerts (Omega Pharma), Trent Lowe (Garmin), Marco Marzano (Lampre), Ignatas Konovalovas (Cervélo), Simone Stortoni (Colnago), Björn Schröder (Milram), Adam Hansen (Colombia) and Edwin Carvajal (Miche).
Gruppo Rubiera; +33" Jorgensen, Velits, Muto, Mazzanti; +1'36" Peloton.
Forcola di Livigno.
Simone Stortoni and Marco Marzano (both have still a chance to conquer the KOM-jersey) sprinted away for the points... Stortoni wins.
Stortoni; +8" Marzano; +22" Mazzanti, Muto, Velits, Aerts, Rubiera, Lowe; +48" Konovalovas; +2'00" Carvajal; +2'55" Schröder, Hansen; +7'12" Peloton.
Spoiler
Simone Stortoni (Colnago) 10
Marco Marzano (Lampre) 6
Luca Mazzanti (Katusha) 4
Pasquale Muto (Miche) 2
Peter Velits (Colombia) 1
Passo di Eira.
The same szenario, Stortoni and Marzano fight for the mountain points.
Stortoni, Marzano; +12" Gruppo Rubiera; +1'16" Konovalovas; +3'37" Carvajal, Hansen, Schröder; +8'17" Peloton.
Spoiler
Simone Stortoni (Colnago) 5
Marco Marzano (Lampre) 3
Pasquale Muto (Miche) 1
The Passo de Foscagno. This time Marzano wins it, unfortunately it is the most unimportant mountain sprint today
Marzano, Stortoni; +35" Muto; +1'58" Konovalovas; +4'47" Carvajal, Hansen, Schröder; +8'50" Peloton.
Spoiler
Marco Marzano (Lampre) 3
Simone Stortoni (Colnago) 2
Pasquale Muto (Miche) 1
Back in Bormio, where the rider started a few hours ago.
Gruppo Rubiera; +3'02" Konovalovas; +6'15" Schröder, Hansen, Carvajal; +8'40" Peloton.
Spoiler
José Luis Rubiera (RadioShack) 8
Trent Lowe (Garmin) 6
Pasquale Muto (Miche) 4
Marco Marzano (Lampre) 3
Simone Stortoni (Colnago) 2
Passo del Gavia.
Simone Stortoni sets a high pace, every other rider in the break dropped soon. And at least, he fulfill his goal: He crosses the top of the Passo di Gavia first, so he gains enough points to take the KOM-jersey back!
Stortoni;
+27" Mazzanti, Muto;
+2'22" Spilak, Paulinho, Leipheimer, Garzelli, Marzano, Scarponi, Basso, Nibali, Rubiera, Pozzovivo, Pinotti;
+3'08" Gruppo Wiggins-Sánchez-Mollema-Cunego-Machado
Spoiler
Simone Stortoni (Colnago) 20
Luca Mazzanti (Katusha) 15
Pasquale Muto (Miche) 10
Levi Leipheimer (RadioShack) 6
Sérgio Paulinho (RadioShack) 4
Stefano Garzelli (Acqua&Sapone) 2
Ever told you that I hate downhill attacking? It is quite unrealistic... Nonetheless, Vincenzo Nibali accelerated - and come away. I tried all later - 99% dot, 99% relay, attacking... Nothing worked, this guy gain more and more ground on us.
Stortoni;
+24" Muto, Mazzanti;
+1'44" Nibali;
+1'56" Scarponi, Pozzovivo, Paulinho Leipheimer, Basso, Garzelli, Spilak.
+2'14" Pinotti, Marzano;
+2'47" Rubiera;
+3'02" Gruppo Wiggins-Sánchez-Mollema-Cunego-Machado
Now even Basso accelerated and build a gap - it seems that Liquigas wants show today which team has the best downhill rider..
Stortoni, Mazzanti, Muto; +45" Nibali; +1'03" Basso; +1'23" Scarponi, Pozzovivo, Paulinho, Leipheimer, Basso, Garzelli, Pinotti, Marzano; +2'07" Gruppo Wiggins-Sánchez-Mollema-Cunego-Machado
10km to go.
Stortoni, Mazzanti, Muto, Niibali; +20" Basso; +55" Gruppo Leipheimer; +1'24" Gruppo Wiggins-Sánchez-Mollema-Cunego-Machado
The rider reached the final climb, the Passo del Tonale.
Basso, Nibali; +16" Stortoni, Muto, Mazzanti; +49" Gruppo Leipheimer.
Levi and Sérgio still make pace - but they are getting tired. Michele Scarponi, who is probably the third best climber in the field, accelerated.
Basso, Nibali; +1'02" Scarponi; +1'16" Leipheimer.
The situation, almost 3km to the finish.
Basso, Nibali; +49" Scarponi; +1'29" Gruppo Leipheimer.
And now, he really wants to show that he is the deserved winner of the Giro d'Italia 2010! Nibali attacks again, and even Basso is not able to follow.
Nibali; +16" Basso; +51" Scarponi; +1'30" Gruppo Leipheimer.
Vincenzo pulled away at the last kilometers and can celebrate his second stage win in Italy! 38 seconds later, his teammate Ivan Basso crosses the line and makes the 1-2 for Liquigas perfect.
Scarponi, who showed an amazing solo effort about the last kilometers, finishes 3rd, +1'22" behind Nibali.
2'06" behind Nibali, Gruppo Leipheimer came in.

NO! Basso takes the last place on the podium with only 13 seconds. Of course Sérgio is the better time trialer, but 13 seconds on 15km are pretty much, it will be close at the end.

Oh NO! What a pity, you lost more time on Nibali..well, hopefully you get back the third position with Paulinho.
By the way, it´s a bit strange to see a real sprinter wearing the sprinter jersey at the Giro

@batista15
Yeah, in PCM 09 always happened that the winner of the GT also got the points and mountain jersey. It happened in the 3 GT for me one season. After that I started to put 0 points for all mountain stages and time trials. In this case it probably happened because of all the breakaways that won in mountain stages... in fact it got very realistic with a lot of breakaways winning mountain stages ^^ Usually only the favourites win, and that doesn't happen that often irl..
Come on Paulinho, you gotta get that podium back!
