Haig bounced back from a disappointment, that's nice to see. Now please don't throw it away in the next key stages.

Sagiv gave it a try on stage 2, but sadly he wasn't benefitting from the lead as much as he would've needed to.
Still, he took two jerseys into the TT, and emerges with the KoM lead which he's guaranteed to keep for another day to make it a total 7 daily jersey classification leads, an incredible haul for a single breakaway effort.
Congrats Croatia, you're on track for great scoring.

That looked like a somewhat exhausting sprint stage, but very nice to see Swift able to win it. The legend still knows how to do it Congratulations, fintas!
Fingers crossed Aranburu is up for trying on the next two stages, as I hope he can race aggressive there. Maybe stage 6 is the one that suits him the most thinking of breakaway hopes and looking at the profiles, but we'll take any try we're given |

Hmm... Kastrantas trying - but far too late. Oh well, in a stage where it doesn't amount to anything I guess it doesn't matter, but we sure doesn't perform very well.

Great sprint by Liepins. One of few times where an Evonik sprinter perfected positioning this season.

Not sure why I brought Quintana here, and not Shikai (and Quintana to Suisse). Quintana looks alright for now, but I'm sure he'll get passed in the GC in the next two stages and thus have terrible race day condition for the final mountain stage, and this race will be bad again.
Still not a bad stage, beating Alarcon and Haig is promising.

Not happy with Haig's climbing performances so far. The TT was great,
but other than that, it feels like he lost significant time on similar strong climbers.

Oh dear. This definately isn't going well...
Next stage is the one and only chance we have to make this race count for anything whatsoever. And with riders like Boily, Budyak and Kastrantas our riders must be idiots if they don't throw themselves out there. With Boily in 26th as our best GC rider there really are no excuses.

Great job, especially with Kozhatayev pulling the strong riders back before the final climb.

This must have been one of the greatest stages by Olivier ever. Was very worried that his team mates did such great job for nothing or a late top10 only. But apparently it was all due to a big plan.
With his TT skills hurting him a lot here, such climbing is fantastic and much needed. Was expecting to gain in the hills, gaining big on mountains is even better.
Thanks for the fantastic report. |

Congrats Croatia part 3.
Absolutely brilliant stage for Evonik. Chiarello with an absolutely incredible ride here, moving up all the way to 4th here (though some like Haig look set to overtake him later again) and Tvetcov also had a strong day, still staying in 12th position in GC as well. Most impressive is how they can always finish these stages after attacking so much at the bottom of the climb. Surely some of the most aggressive climbers around this season...
Curious to see how the next hilly stage impacts the GC. On paper, it should suit both of my two guys quite well so if we can gap some of the better time triallists (e.g. Eastman, Amador, etc) around us, that could be very useful.
Great report Ulrich!

Not so good stage for our youngsters Sivakov and Mamykin. For tomorrow's stage it would be nice for Chernetskiy (our best puncheur) to try to join the breakaway.

Congrats again Croatia. It's like a playground for Phinney this.
Interesting to see Stake Laengen in the break, but it probably wasn't the best today and looks like he missed some energy in the final.
Würtz did well to hang on for so long, but don't think that was smart either! Hope he didn't empty the tank completly and certainly hope that he can recover a bit tomorrow before the TT.

Good try from us to send Quintana in the breakaway. Aranburu seemed to do his maximum to the finish in the peloton, though, fingers crossed he still has some energy to try for the breakaway tomorrow.
Congratulations again, Croatia! This is too easy for Phinney |

Good efforts of our riders to get into the breaks, even if it ultimately ended up fruitless.
Sagiv would've loved to add some sprint points to his tally on stage 4 to get second in that classification for one more day, but sadly the peloton did their stupid overchasing thing there.
Today, I loved seeing Madouas give it yet another try, but he's not quite there yet. Mager in that group might've been able to collect some KoM points.
Egger up in 25th on that stage is insanely good, although it would've been way better to have Helme achieve that...one of our 75mo guys has a decent TT and is U25-eligible, and Egger is not the one.
But there's one more moutain stage to go anyway, and it would be harsh to fault Egger for overperforming like this just because Helme didn't!
Tomorrow might go to the break, so we need to be in it.

Can't ask for more than Sosa trying. Hoped to see Aranburu up there too, as he felt like our best bet for a stage result looking at previous stages this race and the stats. Fingers crossed we can continue to try our luck in breakaways. With no ambitions elsewhere in the race, at least we can be hopeful
Thank you for the reports, Ulrich. I'll be offline for the final stages, but will catch up again on Sunday/late Saturday. Looking forward to seeing what's in store then |

Bad stage and tactics by the team.
The hill stage was needed to drop Eastman and other low hill good TT riders....instead Zardini attacks and isolates Olivier behind, who didn`t have the best day neither.
Now it`s very difficult to remain in a decent top10 position as the TT will see him lose 3-4 minutes minimum to some of the best TT riders.
Hopefully the last mountain stage then will see him on a good day again. |
