Good to see Borges near the front on stage 1. Yet anything can happen in the next couple of stages.
Thanks for all the reports jph!

Well, now I'm actually glad Claeys got in the break. If he can hang on to tenth the race won't end badly after all, but I have a feeling he won't be allowed in the break tomorrow

How the hell does Juul-Jensen get dropped that early even from the break? I know he's overperformed in the past and was due for the opposite this year, but I just can't explain this level of incompetence. He's not even with the other punchers, so it's not a hill/mtn issue. Gautier for instance has worse backup stats and worse mountain, so if those were the issue, JJ should be competing with him. His mountain was better than most of those punchers ahead of him in the break today. All of his backups are above average for peers near his hill level and above it in the DB. Not to even mention that guys like Fiorelli survived, who are literally the same rider type, but far worse. It just doesn't make any sense to me how he can be this consistently bad across all races this year.
I'm glad Fabbro got the top 5 by some miracle, so we avoid a zero pointer, but damn. On what planet should he be that much better than JJ on a stage like this? Literally the only thing he's got on JJ is mountain, but by the winners we can deduce that wasn't the deciding factor today. Every other backup and hill stat he is much worse. So what the heck was it?
5th on a stage is fine I guess. If I had seen it before I opened the report I'd be pretty happy to salvage anything. But when you get 3 guys of that caliber in the successful break on a hilly stage, I guess you usually expect a bit more. Not that I did, knowing how bad these guys have been, but it's still disappointing.

It's not gonna happen for Kelderman, is it? Not going our way at all this season.
Decent stuff from Bovenhuis on Stage 2 to join the successful break.

Just absolutely dumbfounding display by the AI there. Why would they let riders of that skill to get in the breakaway AND stay away AND gain enough time that they will likely win the GC now. Just makes no sense.

Difficult to comprehend what is going on here?
19 rider break gets away without the yellow jersey team represented (or my team)!
Flugel (80 HIL) comes in surrounded by teammates 9 minutes down and only 21 seconds ahead of our sprinter Haller (65 HIL).
I can only think this is a cunning ploy to get into the break tomorrow and win the stage by 15 mins

I was excited to see Borges back to his previous self. But it was short lived it seems.
Congrats on the win Valio!

Well that was shit, wasn't it!
Nobody willing to control a breakaway that strong is weird. Gautier rightly takes advantage, congrats to Valio
Haven't seen Beltran being particulary active so far, so hopefully he's saved the strength for the last stage. Gautier has a nice gap over us and will probably be on a high with the leaders jersey. Still not all is lost I think, he might be slightly weaker with this breakaway effort and the final climb might be the toughest one of the entire race. We might see some bigger gaps open up there.
On the other hand Beltran has to be careful also. Slagter, Boily, Kelderman, Izagirre, Grmay and Oomen all on the same time are huge threats. Minimum expectation is to hold on to 3rd in GC, but if possible I'd like to see us attack Gautier and/or Kinoshita.

6th is a very good ride from Grmay and gives us a decent dollop of points as we look to outrun a potential fall back into the scrum escaping the relegation fight, that plus the stage placing from Higuita on day 2 makes for a happy race for us. Grmay certainly putting his hand up for more trust next season to do it himself, he's unlucky to fill the exact niche Bennett does but perhaps I could book him his own race or two - certainly food for thought. Areruya in the U25 to a certain extent and the lack of breaks on the hill stages is a disappointment but can be forgiven as it's clear they were helping out Grmay, Dyrnes isn't really a disappointment as he is just plainly useless sadly.
Outside of us it's good to see Kelderman on the podium, plus congrats to Kinoshita who seems to (from my hazy memory) get up for Beijing quite often! Not great for us as (though I doubt it will be so in the final rankings) we are currently top 10 rivals with Rakuten I guess

Very cool results, especially the Top3. Oomen the surprise (as was Grmay), some big points in the relegation battle for many teams. Hopefully this was the turning point for Philips.

Oomen guiding us to safety. I don't even want to think about what this would've given on the original course. Good to see Beltran finish 2nd though, as they were probably hit that hardest with the route change.
Congrats Rakuten and thanks for the reports!

I thought Beltran would be the clear race favourite before the profile change, so I'm happy we finished 2nd behind Kinoshita, who is an excellent rider as well
Some interesting results overall Kelderman looks like was good, but same as Beltran didn't have the form to challenge Kinoshita. Oomen and Grmay up there is a slight suprise, Gautier hanging on to 5th is a good result in my opinion, even Claeys in 9th is pretty good with some of the weaknesses he's showed.
Despite some "what could've been moments" this month, between Kenya, Nantahala and Beijing we have had some nice scoring that should continue see us above the relegation line
Congrats to valverde on win and thanks to jph for all the reports

This victory in the last stage serves as a consulation for another disastrous race.
As predicted, Vogt was once again a complete nullity, and although it did not harm Paulinho's possibilities it was still a disappointment.
Congrats to Rakuten and thanks for the report

You can leave Bellis in China after that one
He was probably due a dud race but I feel that our promotion cushion and then some has been eroded away...

Claeys with ninth and the KoM in the end, cannot be too unhappy with that. Turns out our DS did know what he was doing after all by sending Claeys in the break.
Congrats Rakuten and thanks jph for the reports!

That was a wild race if ever there was one. Not too sure with the breakaway AI though!
At long last Kelderman lives up to his potential in a stage race this season. It is probably too late now anyway, but we've got to keep trying till the season ends.
Congrats to valverde on the win and thanks for the great reports jph

4 guys left in a successful break. Which one will get dropped and completely passed by the peloton to not get a stage result? This guy!
The aggressiveness in the final two stages is something. But ultimately, we are in a relegation battle. It's a points game. And scoring point exclusively from a 5th place on one stage is clearly not going to be enough in our current situation. Our opponents scored well and gained precious ground on us. We can't keep doing this.
Great reports jph! Thank you! Congrats to valv on the win.
