Wasn't the smaller field size supposed to cut down on crashes? Is it just me or have there been an increase in crashes in this TDF?

not sure if there is an increase, but actually not a decrease
remembering the year of tony martin/cancellara in yellow there were a lot of crashes in first week that's always nervous

btw is utopian to think that 176 vs 198 you can have less incidents, I suppose it is more for teams predominance

Some people thought that the reduced team size had an effect in the Giro, because there weren't a lot of crashes.
Probably just better bike handlers at the Giro because I wouldn't say that the Italian roads are any better than the French, probably vice-versa. |

And we can't deny the fact that it is such a nervous race.. in a sprint finish we can see like 10 GC men trying to be in front, and 10/15 sprinters, plus all the leadout men with all of them.. It's such a tense race before the first mountain stage, it's always been like that and will always be, this year it's just been more accentuated

Actually riders are more doped with painkillers and stuff compared to other races and thus cant feel the bike.
Today, obvious Sagan win is obvious.

Ah, almost too easy for Sagan. Quickstep should have done better but not so much they can do with Sagan and Colbrelli surviving. Gilbert and even Ala coming for yellow.

The stage was ridden too slow for Sagan not to win it. |

but looking at it again, Gilbert probably was the strongest. starts sprinting at over 800m to go and finished 3rd.

Alaphilippe burned his legs for the bonus second and had no to spend in the finish...very bad managing imo
