You wanted to make the point there Mig?
He deserves it, was fantastic in the Giro.

Not entirely unexpected, he was lacking results in the classics and he probably realised he'll never win a GT. A very good rider, but so many wasted oppurtunities..
Better to go out while still competitive than pushing on for another year and being pack fodder

Purito Rodriguez, the best climber in 2012, could've won the double, but failed both times. First against Hesjedal, I cheered for him, but it was hard to see him race that conservatively.
By far the best climber in the Vuelta the same year, but fucked up again, this time around a little differently.
I will miss him. Its soon the end of the big 4 of Spanish cycling, those cyclists I've grown up and cheered for through 10 years now. Pretty sad to think about.. |

And, sadly, Spain doesn't seem to have anyone to trully replace them.
Sure, Ion Izaguirre, Jesus Herrada, Carlos Barbero, Marc Soler will all be good cyclists, but probably never GT winners. |

I have an crazy thought - Giant may not sponsor and even be bike supplier to the team in 2017. Specialized on the other hand are leaving Astana (rumoured) and we all know wherever Specialized will go, there will be.......Peter Sagan. The team may lose Giant and are certainly will lose their biggest star Degenkolb (sorry Tom), but perhaps they may be fancy for Sagan and Specialized? Imagine the prospects of Alpecin commercials starring Sagan - a hairy dude and big name draw. A match made in heaven maybe?

Nope, they really don't, but Landa and I. Izagirre have shown promising signs on the biggest scenes, so they are not completely hopeless. It looked like they would be that 2 years ago. Fernandez, Soler, Herrada etc. still have to do that, but it will be immensely hard to match those 4. |

Purito has been amazing..
Best signing for Katusha. On he's prime he managed to ride all season as top form.
Don't be worried..spaniards always have kick ass climbers. |

Sad about Purito. For a while there it seemed like the Vuelta was created for him to win stages, but somehow he never won a GT. Can't say I was rooting for him in the 2012 Giro obviously but I've always liked him a lot as a rider.
He hasn't looked bad at all so far this Tour, thought it was a promising sign but I guess he doesn't want to risk becoming completely irrelevant.

It was obvious he was going to retire either this year or next year but it's still sad to see Purito go. A great shame that he never managed to win a GT, although often he raced too conservatively for his own good, with a frustrating trio of RodrÃguez, Valverde and the Vuelta parcours trying everything they could to minimise racing before the flamme rouge, and playing his part in the unfolding of the most boring Grand Tour that I know of, the infamous Giro of Passiveness. Nevertheless he always seemed like a great character in interviews etc and he was superb in the last week of the 2013 Tour. I wonder if he's considering taking up a role in stage design, as the Andorra behemoth of last year's Vuelta was his idea, despite the fact that it didn't really suit him and he lost valuable time to Aru, showing that a good stage design appeared to be more important to him, which was great to see.

You can say that, Stromeon, but I will still always love that Vuelta 2012, about the flamme rouge, that is. Especially in the wake of Giro + Tour 2012, Purito, Contador and Valverde racing against each other on the steepish shit you could find in their prime. It really was a sight, Valverde and Contador was back, Purito was better than ever. |

Sad to see Purito retire even though I didn't see most of his prime, he's always an interesting rider to watch so hopefully his final tour can be good.

Giant are locked in as bike supplier for next season and most likely will remain a naming rights sponsor so as much fun as your idea is it's not going to happen. Alpecin have a clause in the sponsorship deal that says they can withdraw if the team changes identity so I'd expect them to be doing that now which is why Sunweb is stepping up from minor to major sponsor.

Sad to see Purito leave, but honestly i am not sad that he has not won a GT, because it happened in majority of cases because of his extreme passivity on finishing climbs. 1km to go sprints should not win you a GT.
