Stage 4

Arguably the most decisive day today, with Ardennes style short sharp climbs, Cobbles, a strong wind, and almost 200km in length! The only blessing for the riders, is that The rains haven't arrived, but we will be hard pressed today as we have no specialist for this sort of terrain.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/s4-3.jpg

We got Bjorn Selander up the road as part of the 13man breakaway that got away very early. Skil-Shimano clearly had high hopes for the break, they had 3 men out in front!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-44.jpg

The Peloton had set a fairly lazy pace throughout the first portion of the course, and the breakaways lead was 9'46 over the first of 3 Laps of the Oude Kwaremont.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-38.jpg

Seeing the break stood a chance, Pinotti and Bak of HTC tried to bridge across the 4'20 gap as the group arrived at the second ascent, Oroz of Euskaltel and Gerdemann of Leopard tried to follow suit.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-50.jpg

The attack didn't get free, but did cause a major rip in the peloton, we managed to get 5men into the group! Phinney was riding really well, and had support in the group, from Rollin, Rodriguez, Beyer and Deeny!
Beyer and Deeny were all but spent having spent the day looking after the leaders, and now handed over to Rollin, who would try and carry his man close to the line.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-54.jpg

Thr group thinned again, after an attack from Devolder removed the remaining riders, and as we headed towards the final lap of the Kwaremont, The favourites group was sat just 1'12" behind the Break.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0011-40.jpg

Devolder was showing his strength once more, he attacked on the steepest section of the climb, though amazingly, Phinney was feeling really powerful, and followed his lead!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-50.jpg

As the Duo got to the break, Hushovd made a hugely powerful attack, he went past the break, and the Duo into the lead, Lars Boom followed him, and he and Devolder formed G2 on the Road, with Phinney and Van Dousselare of the break as G3.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0013-50.jpg

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0014-39.jpg

Hushovd shows his power here today, riding away from the rest, taking the stage victory, 49" ahead of Boom and Devolder, This lead will likely be enough assuming no major shakeups happen on the less selective days to follow.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0015-31.jpg

1'26 behind, came Phinney, and Van Dousselare, This ride was stunning, with clear daylight back to the groups that followed in, 4th place and the Under 25 Jersey for Phinney then?

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0016-32.jpg

WHAT?!?! Phinney and Van Dousselare, despite having a gap of around 16" to the pack, are awarded the same time? OUTRAGE! The DS went straight to the race organizers in disbelief, VG was 3 Groups behind, and yet is awarded the same time, meaning that Despite Phinneys huge effort, he gets no reward!

Stage 5

Today should be a quiet one, with a sprint finish, Freddie is the man today, but there are some great sprinters such as Bozic and Swift, Top 10 is the goal.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/s5-3.jpg

The day was quiet indeed, With an early break going free on the 3rd time of asking, We were without representation up front, in what was a fairly weak break.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0001-57.jpg

It looked like the break might stay away at one point, but the last remnants were reeled in with 3km to ride, and the sprinters fought out the stage. Freddie was blocked in, and was suffering on the run in, never really able to sprint, meaning a disappointing day for us, 32nd our best place.

It was a british rider 1-2 today, with Garmin's Roger Hammond beating Ben Swift to the top, followed in closely by Lars Boom of Rabo.

A very quiet day indeed for Exxon Frown

Stage 6

Today looks to be set for a reduced group finish, The course includes some challenges, such as laps of the Cauberg, but with a flat final section, It seems likely that it'll all come back together for the finish.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/s6-3.jpg

The 8 man breakaway was a late break by usual standards, After many attacks grew beyond comfortable levels and were stopped, eventually this group got clear around 50km in.

Our plan was slightly different to the other teams around us, we needed to reel the break in before the sprints, This meant we were forced to do a lot of work at the front today, as other teams were less willing to stop the break this early.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0003-49.jpg

With the break caught before the 2nd checkpoint, We set about positioning Taylor for the intermediates. Surprisingly they were uncontested, and he picked up enough bonus seconds to bunny hop to 4th in the GC, along with the Youth Jersey!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-45.jpg

With the sprints won, we had little left to contest a final burst with Freddie. The sprint was won by Rabobanks Oscar Freire, who just pipped Veelers and Eisel, rounding out the podium.

Good race for Phinney.

Nice race for Taylor, too bad his gap on Stage 4 didn't count, but in the end it didn't make much difference Wink

Great job in the youth with Phinney! The Vuelta is scary with so many race days on Chris though.

Hmmm... With Ardennes+Giro+prep, seemed like more to me... But that's good!

Stage 7

The last day before the final TT, and it should be quite hard fought! There are several short sharp hills on the route which will surely test the legs, before a cobbled sections just before the finish which will give people a chance to breakaway and possibly grab some seconds

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/s7-3.jpg

9 men got into a break at the start of the day. However, it was clear that no one really believed in its success, as most riders up there were very weak by PT standards.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0001-60.jpg

Hushovd had no intention of letting the break have the spoils today, he had his whole team up at the front pulling the break back, and making the legs hurt in the peloton whilst he was at it!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0002-43.jpg

The last man from the break was caught with 20km to go, The peloton was split into two groups of 80 as the last of the hills was cleared, but it looked likey that it would all come back together, as AG2R and Landbouwrekrediet were both pulling hard having missed the split.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0005-48.jpg

Onto the cobbles for the last time in the tour, Freire and Breschel made an attack together as the peloton juddered along, it was unclear whether Rabo were going for it with these men, or just trying to help out Lars Boom (2nd in GC)

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-41.jpg

Boom it was! It all came back together on the other side of the cobbles, and Boom was able to take the sprint in front of Hoste (Katusha) and Eisel (HTC.) We had a quiet day within the peloton, looking after Taylor in the Young Riders Jersey. He leads VG by 9" ahead of the TT, so it should be a close day tomorrow.

Good Luck with the Time Trial Wink

baggieboys32
Right guys, I'm afraid that this is being put on hold for a week until i've finished my exams, I may get the odd stage out, such as over the weekend, but no promises for the next 8days.

Regarding the future; My plan is this:

Finish the season on PCM2010

Let PCM 2012 arrive, wait for a DB to be released by Daily, then pick up where i left off, on the new PCM.

Good idea! As long as it continues... Smile

Team News

Lance Armstrong today suffered a Patellar Tendon tear, whilst out on a training ride as he winds down from a hectic season with the team.

This led him to considerations regarding his future, and he has decided to decline the optional extra 12months available in his contract. He has instead activated a second clause within his contract, and joins the team in a coaching role for next season, and will be a member on the decisions board.

In a press conference held this afternoon following the final stage of the Eneco Tour, he made this statement.

Lance: My recent injury has brought to light the fact that i'm not getting any younger, and I feel now is the right time for me to leave the racing to the younger members of the side.

We are next year to be joined by the young Tejay Van Garderen, he is a fantastic young stage race specialist, and deserves a chance to flourish in a leaders role here at Exxon.

When Mike (Our DS) asked me to return for the season, I was pleased to help out, but there was a reason, my contract was a 12month, with an option for 12 more. My age is now too big a factor in my racing, so it is with a heavy heart that I leave my sport, and will now focus my intentions solely upon coaching here at Exxon. We have made great progress, and hopefully I will be able to pass on what I have learned over the course of my career to the younger members of the team who hope to grow and develop.

The team will fully support Lance's decision, and he has today put pen to paper on a 3year contract deal, as the teams head coach, a role which he will begin upon completion of his current contract at the end of the season.

Now to get Joe Dombrowski! He's gonna be the next American tour winner, so you should. Don't think he's in the DB though.

Stage 8

The final day of the Eneco tour, a 16km TT which will be the final chance to move up or down in the GC. Phinney holds a slender lead in the -25 jersey competition, but this is his speciality, so we look well set to secure the victory.

Hushovd meanwhile, holds 25" over Lars Boom, who has been on far so far this tour, and is no slouch against the clock. Thor will have to really motor if he is to protect the leaders jersey today.

The race...

Sam Bewley has had a poor race for Radioshack so far, and was looking for a major improvement in his form. He showed his skill against the clock with a fabulous early time, of 23'59.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0001-61.jpg

This time stood until we entered the top 30, when Alex Rasmussen became the first man to dip under his time. Once more, he would not be competing for more than the stage win, but he seemed well set to take that.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-56.jpg

The pre-race favourite was HTC's TT specialist, Tony Martin. However, the German looked off colour today, fading badly in the second portion of the course, to finish 29" down, with a time equal to that of Bewley.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-51.jpg

The last of the riders competing for nothing more than a stage, was Jens Voigt, who was unfortunate to lose 1'25 in a crash on day 2, which put paid to his GC hopes, he was in no mood to hang around today however, taking a further 5" out of Rasmussen and the provisonal stage win.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0013-51.jpg

VG was no where to be seen today, losing almost a minute to take himself out of contention for the youth jersey, but Geraint Thomas of Sky, was only 16" back ahead of today, and is very strong against the clock. he came home 11" behind Voigt, meaning that Taylor had to ride hard to make sure of his win.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0014-40.jpg

Ride hard he did! He finished 2" quicker than the Sky man, meaning that he wins the -25 competition, by 18" over G, as well as putting him on the podium with 3 riders left to finish.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0017-28.jpg

The final battle of the day, was Boom vs Hushovd for the GC. Boom had to gain 25" on course, if he was to win, and showed he meant buisness, by breaking Voigts stage lead, by 5".

Hushovd had been 9" behind Boom at the intermediate checkpoint, could he hold on during the second half, to keep the lead?

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0020-16.jpg

Hushovd was giving it his all into the final corner, with the seconds counting down, he really sprinted the last few metres, and looked up anxiously at the clock to see his time...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0022-16.jpg

23'56 the board read. 26" behind Boom. He'd lost the GC by 1" after 8days in the saddle... Boom was visibly overjoyed as he climbed the podium to recieve his prizes, but you couldn't help but feel for Thor having to make do with second place.

Taylor has had a fantastic last tour of the season, picking up 4th place in the GC. He's shown he's got what it takes to fight in difficult terrain, and his reward is a contract improvement ahead of next season, from team mate, to protected rider.
