Out of the 4 sprints, it was 2-2 between him and farrar. I would consider that a success for Tyler.

Meersman never really showed himself here.
What did you expect from him? Meersman lacks top sprint speed against pure sprinters or just better ones such as Sagan.
He really need tough hills in the route to take energy out of pure sprinters or to drop them altogether.
Farrar did great, hope it's sign of things to come for him.

Well if word coming out of the Farrar camp pre-Tour of California is anything to go by he should be pleased with the victory he scored in Stage 4. Word is Farrar has gone back to doing what he was a couple of years ago training wise since the cobbled classics ended. Instead of trying to spread himself thin trying to be good at both the cobbles and hills too.

Farrar is good enough for this 2HC Tours where there is no much good sprinters, put him at Tour de France with Greipel, Cavendish, Kittel, Sagan, Viviani and Bouhanni among others and he will be last. |

Compared to other top sprinters Farrar is weak and lacks the acceleration to finish it off. Well, he's still a good sprinter at his own right. Beating other sprinters esp. Sagan in this race is quite an achievement.
A really good week for Team NetApp-Endura, who can compete w/ the big boys.

He's beaten those guys at the Tour before. However he hasn't been the same since. Maybe he can get back to it.

Nice 2nd win for Sagan and 10th in career there, slowly buiding up towards the Tour, next stop, Switzerland.
Also Sagan took the points jersey, i wonder in how many races Peter did not win a points jersey when finishing the race in his pro career, 10% max?
TJ had no opposition in Cali, easy win. Happy for König though, great achievement to win a mountain stage on such a prestigious race, even with lacking of top riders.

Successful tour for OGE. Matthews getting used to being given a leadout train, whilst Cam Meyer did well on GC. |

Things I took out of this tour:
Sagan looked beatable, which is the first time I've seen that in the last few years, perhaps he wasn't in top form for this?
Tejay doesn't look ready...period. Yeah he won the race, but the competition was abysmal. Nothing against Acevedo and König but if he intends to compete in TDF guys like those will be domestiques for their teams, and the other GC riders will put minutes into Tejay; luckily Cadel looks good again!
Perhaps Farrar was the reason for Sagan's struggles? Is he maybe back to how he was? Ever since that Giro he has seemed lost, looks like he might be coming out of it.
Riders moving up: Acevedo (Sky want another Colombian climber?), Craddock, not ready for a World Tour yet, but could move onto a bigger domestic team.
I don't think I agree with the announcers, Andy still looks to be woefully out of form, and won't finish the TDF if he goes. I think he looked better mostly because the other riders weren't that good.
Rogers seemed to hold his own fairly well and will be a tremendous help for Contador, that Saxo team is really starting to get scary now.

I think you are overestimating California race as the signal for the Tour. Why Sagan or Tejay should be in great form now? That would be a mistake from them anyway, they need top form in a month and a half, not now.
They are only starting to build for July now, so not much of an indicator. But as they are great riders, they still won stages and GC against poor opposition...

Not saying they should be in great form, well I expect Tejay was pretty close BMC clearly set this is a major objective for the season.
Sagan also values this race, and his continued success there, I'm sure he isn't peaking either but its nowhere near the dominance he had last season.

I'm glad to see Hushovd up there again in the top 6 on a couple of stages aswell as a 3rd place. I think he can do quite well if he goes to the Tour as a guy for the somewhat hilly flat stages.
Or maybe another insane climb.

Pro Cycling Stats does have the finishing results of the points classifications (at least since 2012), so looking at that + quick research on the 2011 and 2010 stage races he finished gives 11 points jersey in 19 races. Quite far from 90% but of course very impressive.

It wasn't the climb that day but the descent that was crazy, hit 112 kph in one section...
It is good to see him coming into some type of form and yeah I could see him pinching a stage win out of a breakaway at the tour
