Croatia(14) playing the long game: make his name on the forum a different country who are much better at football many years ago so he is ready to pretend to be Croatian and not German come Russia 2018
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Denmark were unlucky. They played their way into the game, Croatia didn’t really go for them and Schmeichel was desperately unlucky.
Not convinced there is any foul play at work with Russia: just think they’re an average side who have been thumped by the first decent team they’ve played. Then against Spain, they got a lucky penalty, equalised, then sat in their own box while Spain passed in front of them until the penalty shoot out.

Ohh boy do I have some mental hangovers today, after that loss against Croatia last night.
Being clear underdog we went into the game Denmark vs. Nigeria '98 style getting a quick 1-0. Unfortunately also a quick 1-1 and Croatia all over the game for the first half. Then we ate our way back and was decent before the break. After the break and throughout the overtime we were by far the better team, despite Christian Eriksen being absolutely nowhere. Lasse Schøne (who has played shit all tournament) came in and stepped up, and really performed, whereas Michael Krohn-Dehli came in and almost lost the match for us with a horrible loss to counter - much like when he lost us the qualification against Italy some years back!
Luckily, Mathias "Zanka" Jørgensen did a heroic "Suarez" by cracking down the opponent after dribbling Schmeichel to save our chances. With old rules he should have been sent off, but the new one says no, and he was able to help us to the shoot-out. I honestly believed he would kick our 4th kick, but unfortuately no.
Every kid in the neighbourhood was awakened when Schmeichel made that overtime penalty save. What a moment!!
Only to see our best penalty kick takers, Eriksen, Schøne and Jørgensen, miss their kicks to send us home. Dreadful!
Looking back on the tournament, Croatia definately deserves a quarterfinal more than us, but solely on the game, definately not. I believe they will be kicked out by Russia - unfortunately. For us, this was a golden opportunity to get to a WC semifinal. Something we will never get close to again for 20-30 years - if ever. So today we are hurting!
Tomorrow we look forward and hope to qualify for the euro 2020, with an even better team!

Imo even with new rules he should have been sent off to be honest.
Rules basically say that if it`s a fight for the ball, it can be a yellow only.
But in this scenario the goalkeeper was already passed and the forward just needed to get to the ball first to make an easy goal.
The tackle came from behind and, yes, while obviously also being a fight for the ball, it was in first part a last opportunity to avoid the goal.
So a very, very tough decision but in my understanding of the new rule, still a potential red card, which would have been given 9/10 times I think.
In the end a great fight and a weird penalty shooting with Modric close to 2 bad shots.
Except for Kjaer this were some shit shootings. |

During the penalties it became very clear that Jorgensen, Eriksen and Schone all play(ed) in the Netherlands
Not too surprised Jorgensen missed his penalty, doesn't take the penalties at Feyenoord anymore either after missing

Totally agree with that.
Feel sorry for Mexico today, they played decent but Brasil was on another level. Lookin' forward seeing Brazil vs Belgium.
Meanwhile, what do you think guys about England? Will they pass Colombia? |

I guess Japan knows how Sweden felt vs Germany.
Tactical error on Japan on that corner. They went for it and no cover back and a long corner. Why not a short and keep the ball.
Kind of classic ending with Europeans vs Asians I guess. Three corners decided it.
But when will Belgium really play up to their quality of players ? This their golden generation loaded with class players, but it's a team sport.
I must say Vertoghens header was really cool. Did he really mean to put it in the net ?

May sound like a stupid question, but do you think Hareide’s improved the team from the Olsen years?

I don't think he did. But that was a huge mistake by the Japan's keeper. However, Vertoghen played rly bad today in my opinion.
Yet, well played Japan. At least they were eliminated by playing with dignity and had huge balls against one of the greatest Belgium squads in the last 2-3 decades.
To be honest, Japan played an enthusiastic and smart football, much more fun to watch in comparison with football played by Argentina, Portugal, or even England.
And yet again, this world cup shows us that anything is possible Great game tonight. |

Great match. Japan masterfully blocked De Bruyne’s influence in Belgium’s style of play and were very well organized. Pity that a hasty decision sealed their fate. Brazil-Belgium can either be a bore or a fun game to watch, but may the unpredictability stay. |

Come on England. We're never going to have another chance like this to get to the final. No easy games at the world Cup but I don't think any team could hope for a better run than Colombia, Sweden and then Croatia or Russia to get to the final. Don't mess it up as usual.

Yes, most definately. We played well for a long time under Morten Olsen, but we were constantly too naive, and lost important games because of it.
Åge brought us out of the previous millenium, which have been good. He changed Eriksen from anonymous to a match winner, and while he had a bad WC, it is nothing compared to those 50 odd matches with Olsen.
We don’t play great football, but honestly we shouldn’t. We are no longer among the 15 Best teams in the World, so it was about damm time we started acting our level.

Penalty shootout and England.
YES
FINALLY they did it.
The GHOST is gone (perhaps) , but heaven knows if they can win over Sweden.
England collapsed in second half like a balloon that lost all air. Insecure and nervous. Sweden are playing a hideous disciplined game and no team gets this far being bad. Sweden have a team of no-names that play collective with enormous believe in what they can do. England showed that they could doubt themselve and that final Dier penalty might have been taken by Ospina.
