It's a real shame Gesink couldn't get a gap in stage 16.
But it's really good that he didn't miss out on the move in stage 17. Also, this is the second time we join a breakaway and it doesn't make to the finish line. If the first time, Gesink won the stage and it didn't matter, now I feel like I've been robbed.
A bit disappointed that Brambilla seems to be riding here 100% for Gesink and doesn't seem to have any ambitions of his own. I think he should have been able to finish in the top 20.

A real shame Tenorio didn't go with the big attack, but atleast he didn't crack completely and limited the losses. Keeping first place was always going to be a hard task. Hopefully he can hold off Amador/Gesink. Especially Gesink with the remaining hilly stage.

Pluchkin, you beauty.
Second stage win, closing on Swift in points competiton and especially a GC lead, superb stage, whate a strike from Aleksandr. Now to survive the three crucial stages, because as we can see anything can happen to GT leader, as Smowz pointed out. Hopefully Pluchkin will turn this unhappy trend around as the clearly strongest rider in the race so far.
Thanks for the congrats and also for another nice report, it is great to have a two pieces to read every day!

Next stage looks absolutely epic indeed, how many riders will miss the cut?

After a rather quite first two weeks this has been a relatively successful Vuelta for us since. Weird to see De la Cruz higher in GC than Contador.
Congrats to Avin, perhaps we have finally seen the winning move.

Nice performance by Lecuisinier to keep his 13th here, and take some time on the riders coming from behind. No real gaps to the riders infront though, but 13th is a good GC for us.
I hope that he will be bold enough to give it a go from well out on one of the stages to come though, as I really need to get atleast one nice stage result. I lack that very much. Koretzky had a decent one, but it really gives us no points. We are FAR down compared to Vesuvio here. They are likely to outscore us by 400-500 points here.

Congrats Avin. I'm glad Amador didn't lose time, but this podium battle is really tight. It is still very unpredictable, even for the win, although Pluchkin has a clear advantage now.

Nice for Cunego to essentially be in the front group, until the end when Pluchkin sprinted away for the victory. Great win for him btw, congrats Avin. 8th in GC looks like Cunego's worst possible placing now, unless he has a horrible day. Phinney likely catches or gets very close on the final day.

Pliuchkin was bound to be the strongest, but i'm still disappointed that Tenorio (and Amador) can't make gaps with +2/+3 MO stats to other climbers on such a hard stage. Tenorio still not in the safe zone for the podium, but the chances for the others are getting slimmer.

Brenes make a freaking move you utter dick..at least that wanker Cicero is out of the race, not seeing his name in results is the only positive thing now.

What a win for Pinot.
And nooooo... Maksimov. The Vuelta was 3 stages too long.

Looks like Gesink will have to concentrate on defending the 4th spot rather than trying to go for the podium.
Brambilla with another disappointing result. He'd better be preparing for a win on Angliru.

I'm going to throw up soon. Lecuisinier you deserve a kick in the face you lazy cunt!
Of course these late breaks mean that he will fuck up his chances at 12th-13th in the GC aswell......................

Amazing win for Pinot.
A shame that the real favs waited for the final climb as this stage could have produced huge gaps |

Great stage.
This made me laugh though:
"[Pinot] delivers on home soil and makes the crowd go crazy."
The crowd are looking the other way in the background.
Great report though.

Pluchkin with another statement there, no doubts he's the best climber in the race. The race for third place is just getting more intense though! Gesink must look forward to the next "hilly" stage, which on paper should be his great chance.
Again solid from Guldhammer, and he looks set for a top 10 now if nothing really special happens on the final three stages. Kritskiy is still a possible challenger for 9th, I think with the TT ending the race, but hopefully Guldhammer can defend his big gap, and I must admit I will be slightly disappointed if he doesn't, looking at what he has done so far. |

Would have liked Cunego to extend the gap to Phinney a bit, but a Top 10 is looking good. Shame to see my entire sprint train dnf today.

What a fantastic victory for us. Any stage win is good, but it's even sweeter on home soil. Now to hope Pinot or Vuillermoz can take home the KoM jersey and this Vuelta will be a huge success. |
