Tour de l'Avenir Discussion
jph27
Not a single Level 4 rider for us here and yet we still have 3 of the Top 10 climbers, a top 10 puncheur and 2 of the top 10 sprinters. Unfortunately the presence of Herklotz, Mohoric and Ewan makes that worth very little, but this should still be one of our better races Pfft

Hoping for a podium from Carthy, with Ranaweera in the midst of the top 5 and Sembukutti and Dulanjana in the 10th-15th range. Kemboi has a shot at the leader's jersey early on with his prologue skills, bonus seconds permitting - and in Silva he has a strong leadout if PCM deems him worthy of one. Turgis could do something on the hilly stage perhaps, while Kumara is just here for XP really.

Come on Repsol/Campari youngsters get some spotlight here.

All to lose for Herklotz.

If Puma controls the race, easy win.

They should not let the breakaway take it big.

Normally Herklotz is by far best in the mountains and has shown in the past to challenge riders like Mohoric on hills as well. Could become a win fest for him here.

For my own team it`s about setting up Bauhaus here. He showed class in the sprinter classic and hopefully can take a stage win somehow.

Without Herklotz, a real close battle could have been happened here between similar climbers and Mohoric. Now it`s probably for rest of the podium.

We actually have a shot at a decent GC with FÃ¥glum Karlsson.
Hope to see some active racing from the Valio jerseys.

With just two loaned in riders racing in different colors, I can't say there's much for Reddit to be excited about. Will be nice to follow this race nevertheless.

I get the XP which is all i care for in this race. Didnt even realize that Lopez has podium chances.

Wondering if Zouzou can fight for a top 10, if Lutsyshyn can compete in the sprints and if Padun can be a useful asset for Herklotz. At least my riders may have some prominent roles Smile

Hoping Shirota can be active and finish in the Top 10

With 3 riders (plus a loanee) i feel we have a really good presence and it'll be interesting to watch what they can do, alongside trying to set up Baska for a sprint if possible.
I wish Roman and Fintas the best of luck! For all the others no disasters

I feel the combined team with Tastasol here got a chance on every stage, and could possibly podium with our loanie Borisaljevic. Should be an exciting Avenir for us! Even though my guess is the sprint stages will be mostly breakaways with only one team really wanting to chase, while the climbs will be won by Herklotz

Avenir is always worth looking forward to, a rare occurrence of all 3 divisions being brough together Smile.

WCC's youngsters are teamed up with our compadres from Carlsberg here. A very inexperienced line-up, even in u23 terms, so limited expectations to be fighting for the jerseys. Contreras has had a couple of good outings at the U23 one-day races, and hopefully will participate in any bunch sprints that might occur. He shouldn't reckon to be among the top favourites though, so hopefully all our riders get the chance to showcase themselves at some point in the breaks.

Hard to think of any other race this season where the overall winner is such a foregone conclusion pre-race, but this should be the last year where a 'dominator' signs-up for Avenir given more recent MGUCI moves to limit riders turning pro too early in the last couple of years Smile.

+1 Pfft

Herklotz for the win in the easiest way, like winning 5 stages

Not really true unfortunately, I know Padun will have an Avenir at top or near-top level at the very least and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the same for any others.

I don't recall the conclusion of early-season discussion, but I though there had been moves afoot to stop on-loan riders from moving lvl1-3 in one season. How did this conclude? Padun as a lvl 3 at 23 y/o would be a major favourite, but there likely be other contenders like Schleck and van Nierkirk to name a couple of options to make a competitive race. If lvl 4 though he may well look quite over-powered in an U23 field I agree.

Schleck (and Schomber and Jams and Kennett) next year in a level three and below only field <3

11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Yeah, it'd probably be fair to prevent Level 1-3 for loan riders, but for this season I chose to get Padun up to lvl 3 anyway, so he'll be level 4 when he's 23. In any case, I don't think it's right that the small handful of Level 4+ (or maybe even Level 3) riders can always beat up all the Level 1-2 talents, we'd get way more exciting racing with weaker riders.

For example if Level 3+ riders weren't in this edition, we'd have 10 riders on 70-71 MO and at least able to contest it against the hot favourite of Lopez (73 Mo) though Per would also be an interesting favourite with high TT. While all other fields aside from TT (where Wurtz would dominate) would have a good balance and even if it were only Level 4 riders excluded, At least other riders could contest the podium behind Carthy and Seboka and other fields aside from TT (again Wurtz) would be balanced enough for good racing.

Yep, Padun will ride Avenir as a level 4.00 in 2 years, granted he won't win by accident next year already. I think it's fair to have these guys in this race, ultimately, with recent balancing, I am sure there will always be 4-5 really strong riders contesting the win here in future seasons, which is fair in my opinion. Padun may become a tiny bit overpowered as a level 4, sure, but there certainly will be more riders with 76+ MO and possibly better TT than Padun.

This is the first time I have a rider competitve in any field of the Tour de l'Avenir. I see Leung is the second best prologue rider present. I hope he can achieve a result according to that in the opening stage. Smile

Bikex
I think a win would have been possible for Leung on a very good day, but I can't complain about 3rd and a very good team performance with also Bohli in the top 10 and the provisional lead in the teams classification. This was probably already our best stage, but I am still looking forward to the rest of the race. Smile
