News in January

Hi all

Bit of shameless self-promoting but the 2018 Velogames Championship thread has been opened. Would be nice to get the participation numbers up this year to increase the level of competition. I'll probably send out intermittent reminders in the news thread throughout the early part of the season.

You don't need to enter every race to take part however if you want to challenge for the overall title it will be good to get involved from the start. The early season races are usually a good place to pick up easier points.

If you have any questions then please go over to the above thread where they can be answered without clogging up the news thread. I won't respond to any queries in this thread.

Cheers

I don't like the whole thing where the national champ jersey is just the usual team kit slightly modified with a flash of another colour.

Stupid idea. It's like using national teams only.

I don't understand your response. What do you mean "It's like using national teams only"?

THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS DON'T FEEL SPECIAL ANYMORE!

That's the problem - they've turned into glorified training sessions for other major races (mainly the Tour) and riders don't give a damn if they will wear some silly jersey or not. It's not like when Eddy Merckx could win the nationals, 1-2 GT's, some classics and the Worlds in a single year. Some national champions aren't even relevant during the season or are domestiques with some notable exceptions like Tom Dumoulin who won the Dutch TT and went on to win the Worlds TTT (With Sunweb) and TT.

The National champions have to be the best riders in their nations, which in most cases IS NOT. I haven't seen Bardet or Pinot wearing French NC jersey or Chris Froome being British NC

But cycling is about fitness and peaking just as much as it is about ability. If the best rider won every race there would be no point in racing. The best rider in May is not the best rider in July and again not the best rider in September. Realistically not many top riders are going to train to peak at the nationals when the Tour is a week or two later, so the National Champs is very rarely going to be won by the "best" rider. Basically any race other than the Classics, the grand tours and the WC's are glorified training rides for most top level riders.

Also, cycling has that many disciplines who is to say who is the best rider in a country? Who is the better rider, Mark Cavendish or Chris Froome?

Pinot was ITT NC in 2016.
In 2017 major riders to win NC's included: Rohan Dennis, Oliver Naesen, Sergio Henao, Zdenek Stybar, Mads Pedersen, Arnaud Demare, Pierre Latour, Tony Martin, Fabio Aru, Bob Jungles, Michal Kwiatkowski, Silvan Dillier...
Yeah, totally unknown NC winners all the time Pfft

And how is Froome supposed to win an NC in the UK when we don't have any mountains?

Damn Herradass jersey is a thing of beauty! Love it. 100x times better than the Movistar-jersey, unfortunately....

Getting hyped for cycling slowly these days, looking forward to Down Under now and the first racing, then Valenciania and Andalucia which always are good early season races (televised and Valverde participates!) and then the first REAL racing in the Belgian opener. Damn, long winter as always when you don't really care about anything else than the road.

Apparently Aru's jersey was 'just a draft' and will be changed: https://cyclingti...ntos-tour/

Don't know how much better it will get though. Pfft

What's funny is that these teams are receiving so much backlash for jerseys like these and still won't learn. Dimension Data I'm pretty sure had to do the same as UAE 2 years ago for EBH's NC. I don't know how Movistar gets away with their bullshit however.

I get it you need to please sponsors, but is it really a jersey that will get them to make more money? I for one have never desired to visit Abu Dhabi or to Fly Emirates after I've seen Ulissi and Rui Costa raise their hands in celebration, and honestly I don't think I'm alone.

Never underestimate a beautiful and iconic jersey. Even an ugly one will be remembered if the team does well. Just look at Mapei.

You might not think about it but many of the sponsors are doing this for marketing and brand exposure and we'll indirectly get attached to these brands.
Just look at Skoda. Their market share in Denmark raised ALOT when they started sponsering cycling.

But if they keep it up with the team in 10 years time you might think of UAE as "the country behind the cool cycling team" rather than "that arabian dictatorship with shitloads of oil"

No, they were known as "the terrorists who wanted to bring Spain and France down".

Back to the NC topic - in order to serve any purpose at all, how about making them a madnatory event to participate in World Championships and you have to finish in Top 25 to make it in the big list of your nation

But you can make visible the brand on the jersey also with national colours, I think it's even better like marketing move having a national champion jersey

True that but many brands have their own CI which make it difficult to change colors because they dictate the design.
You never see a pink Apple logo for example..

Also many sponsors in cycling are country specific. You don't get too many major international companies. Why would a French sponsor with no international business care that they have the champion of Ireland on their team? They just want their logo and their corporate colours to be seen in France.

Maybe they don't care about the Spanish Champion either Smile

At the end of the day Movistar are not cycling fans. They are a company using cycling as a vehicle to promote themselves. They probably don't see the national jersey as important in comparison to the main objective of getting their brand seen.

Not saying it's right. It's just business unfortunately.
