Its a formidable idea, but not downhill. 10-13 uphill segments on the hardest and most important climbs of the race would not only better, but I bet it would be a lot more prestigious as I can't see a lot of riders targeting this prize or whatever it is. The KoM doesn't really determine who the best climber in the race is at this point (you can argue the pink jersey does), so I would really welcome such a competition. That would be pretty intriguing, I think.

That said, Im not necessarily super much against this. The riders are professionals, I assume they know what they are doing. But imagine time taken on all those climbs, kinda like the old intergiro (a GC within the GC practially), just not favouring the break, altho you could include some climbs on the more tradiotional break-stages or include more passes early on where the best climbers necessarily won't race full on. But I imagine something like this:

Etna, stage 4
Blockhaus, stage 9
Paaso della Consuma, stage 11
Oropa, stage 14
Mortirolo, Stelvio, Stelvio2 (Umbrailpass), stage 16
Pordoi, Pontives stage 18
Piancavallo, stage 19
Grappa, Foza, stage 20

Who can seriously be against something like that? But it just so happens that Pirelli is the sponsor, so I guess it makes sense for them to want a downhill competition instead of an uphill competition (as irresponsible as that is).

Also keep in mind that, in spite of how tragical WW108's death was, Tom Simpson died on a mountain, so if you follow your logic, you should not include KoM's either. Smile

Tom died due to drug use, so following TMM's logic, they were right by banning doping...

Well RSC gotta hold its ground against an encroching ASO so they need new ideas. But that's just horribly stupid. Effing horribly stupid.

Ski cross with roadbikes and skinsuits on tarmac
sounds like harebrained, batshit crazy idea.

Downhill ITT, would be ok. Maybe not counting for the GC time tho.

We have some good news with Keagan Girdlestone making his return to racing in the Australian NRS at the Grafton to Inverell for Team Ultra Racing. Great to see him back after what were horrible injuries last year, he's lucky to be alive let alone racing again.

The correct decision has been made.

I think we all agree that descending is a key skill in cycling and one which should be applauded. But I think to encourage competition in the most dangerous part of any cycling race is simply irresponsible and in very bad taste following the death of Wouter Weylandts only a handful of years ago on a descent at this very race.

People have argued that descenders deserve to be recognised. My argument to that is that their is no such thing as a specialist descender, it's just something everyone needs to do, and so there is no reason for a descenders prize like there is a sprinters prize for specialist sprinters, and KOM prize for specialist climbers and tt stages for specialist tt riders.

People have also argued that sprints are just as dangerous. But a sprint is the end of a race. The very nature of a race means that if more than one person gets to the finish line at the same time, they will sprint. There is no way to avoid this. There is however a way to avoid riders "sprinting" down descents and that is not to make it a competition.

It's the equivalent of the football world cup holding a "best tackle" competition which would encourage defenders to make more unnecessary tackles and so add more of a risk to players getting injured.

There is no such a prize for specialist sprinters, only points competition for best consistent rider of the race. Smile

But apart from that, i agree with your post.
I'll be back

Well, they have been forced to withdrawn due to UCI politics of multiple doping case in the same team during 12 months. They face at least a 15-day sanction of no racing

Well technically it has to go through the Disciplinary Commission first, so the UCI has not banned Bardini at this point in time.
If they can get through the process by the end of tomorrow then the UCI ban will apply for Giro start. If it takes longer Bardini would be able to take the start of the Giro because the Commission tends to not work over a weekend.
