Brilliant move by a "surprisingly" now former sporting director of the team to let Ianetti attack so that Van Winden is completely out of the GC battle!
Zabriskie did at least keep himself in contention, barely.. I really fear for stage 3 now, though I wouldn't be surprised if he loses time on stage 2 and the way Cornu performed is quite disturbing.
Nice win for Alstom, and thanks for the report Smowz!

Hey what a freaky stage. I had anticipated a tedious drag to the finish with a mass sprint, according to the tendency with the previous reports on other races. But this is much more pleasant even though I thought Santos could have a go at this one. Now I'm much more excited for the next couple of stages.
That's also a nice victory from Alstom. Unlucky of Adira to have Mehr-Wenige in that position and losing the stage like that. Nice report as well Smowz, bring in the others

Too bad Mehr-Wenige couldn't hold of the others. I'm really becoming a fan of his. Especially in C1 races, a bit less in C2 classics

And Cardoso is also worth something on this level, awesome!
Daniel Hoelgaard also did a good job in the break.

big stage and many were already apart of the fight for the first places that our goal is optimal. If this profile is able to make some differences then the next two stages should undergo further difficulties.
Too bad Martin Irvine has lost so long now hopefully try is luck on next stages, Mehr-Wenige did well and deserved undoubtedly the stage victory, it was still important to hold the 2nd place and win a few seconds they can do any difference in the end. Hopefully he can achieve victory in one of the next two stages.

Hopefully Costa was saving his energy for the next two stages because he usually performs better during bunch sprints on hilly stages.

As you said I was hoping that Feillu could perform better but Cornu gives me heart.

Nice selective stage, with 4 our riders in the bunch. Shame that Vitoria came from so far back, i thought this stage could suit him and it could have been much better than 7th he finished on. Maybe he will have next chance in the next stage.
I hope the selection continues, while our Popkov and Pakthusov hold there, we need to drop likes of Cornu and Zabriskie before the TT.
Congrats to Boily and his team, great win!
Edit: Oh and i almost forgot to please the breakaway effort of Haijun Ma, collecting some first proper KOM points this year for us, maybe he can go the other day too?

How did this happen???
My team is chasing, which normally means a good position. Then all my riders being dropped...
There goes my win goal...Shame. I think ING will feel the same.
Good news for Costa, Gerdemann, Kirienka and obviously Cornu of course. |

Well that sucks for quite a few other teams. They really don't deserve that. I mean, it works out well for me but it isn't quite the same as winning on the road.
Also great to see the CT teams really sticking it to the PCT ones here.

Costa got blocked in hard core... Probably could have got a podium and bonus seconds with speed he showed out of nowhere.
That said, Zabriskie and Boom lost time! I'm thinking with the home bonus Costa could dominate the ITT like he did Volta a Portugal last season.

Don't rule out homeboy Fonte yet, he also has a decent time trial in his legs
Oh and today Cunha in the break, atleast we show our colours

Great result with our 4 main guys up in the main peleton and with two of them being some of the best TT riders here we could have a great race! |

The nationality bonus would have to make up for his -5 TT compared to Cornu so if that happens I will smash something.
Still have to get through this next hilltop finish though...

Probably not as good as Cornu but if he is within 30-45 seconds of say guys like Zabriskie and Cornu then I'll be happy. Which means Cornu needs to lose time tomorrow or else I'm afraid a Belgium wins here in Portugal.

This race is getting crazier by the stage, I'm astonished with what happened there today. Zabriskie, Nicácio and even Boom (wtf?!) being dropped today is a shocker. For me it's hilarious too have my sprinter in the front group and my leader in the second one, but I guess I won't laugh so hard when the TT comes.
Anyway it looks like there are another couple of great stages ahead. Plenty of candidates for tomorrow's stage and to the overall. Regardless of what happens tomorrow though it seems pretty obvious Alstom is going to score heavily. However at this point I believe the victory will either go to CSC or Bpost.
Fingers crossed for Mendes and Oliveira tomorrow.

Hope for my riders being aggressive tomorrow. A stage win could at least give me a bit back, now with the goal already failed. And maybe Boom is even able to get a top10 in the end at least... |
