A hilly-ish stage is not where I expected Formolo to lose more than 6 minutes.

Cool to see Sosa so active! A shame he wasn't allowed a bigger gap towards the end. |

Mixed feelings about stage 14; great to have 5 riders (Rikunov, Mamykin, Foliforov, Vlasov and Sivakov) finishing in the first group of 23.
Too bad we couldn't turn it into something useful, in fact we let our best of the rest main rivals (Latour and Wellens) take valuable bonus seconds... Strong ride by both of them though, congrats!

Bonus seconds gained on Kudus, but I have to be disappointed with the way Herklotz rode that climb.
Any push from him could've done enough to be in better contention, and even without that, just being at the front of the group like he literally is every single second from kilometre 0 to 170 would've given him a much better shot at the win. No reason to hang around in the latter half ever, much less right when it matters.
Still, a good day overall, and congrats to Latour for taking advantage of the situation!

Good to see Van Poucke in the breakaway! Also encouraging that he was third strongest. These are the stages I think that are our best chances for more stage glory, as the mountain stages towards the end will probably see much better riders join the breakaway, seeing Van Poucke, Roman and Preidler outclassed, I expect.
Strong riding by Latour! What a rider he is, always overperforming his main stats, which isn't surprising at all looking at his secondary stats. Congratulations, beagle!
Hoping we go again for the breakaway on that very difficult looking next stage, and maybe even with more than just one rider. That would be very cool to see! |

Vosekalns is also out of energy. Will be a tough end to the Vuelta

Real bad day for Quintana. Near the back for a while and just broke. Might just be that he's unable to stay in the 3rd week of a GT with his poor backups. But I hope it means he'll get some free reign to attack in the last few days. I think the breakaay elastic is gonna snap really soon.

Carapaz is an absolute joke. Losing more than 13 minutes. Why?

Thank you for the report, UU! And congratulations again, cio
Good to see Preidler in the breakaway. Not so good to see him outclassed, but that was to be expected in this final week. Happy to see us continue trying, hopefully we do the same when we get to the final four mountain stages too.
And now, for the most important stage there is left for us this Vuelta. Really hope Prasad and the team can get the sprint right! |

I'll be bitterly disappointed if Wellens doesn't finish this race in at least 4th in the GC. He shouldn't be losing time to Sivakov there but good that he gained on Latour.
I'm confident that we'll get that 4th and, to be honest, with a great day could even knock Morton off the podium. Conci proving his worth here for sure! What a rider he is. Between him and Rodriguez, I expect we'll have the strength over the next week to get the result we want!
For tomorrow, the last chance for Thijssen to take a stage win so fingers crossed he can get it done!

Wasn't expecting Formolo to be fight for KoM, but here we are. A stage win would be nice too to make up for the fact that we will be missing the top 10 overall.

A nice effort by TGH in what looked like a pretty hard mountain stage. Still a long ways to go if he wants to fight for that last top 10 spot.

Really great report UU, I enjoyed that! Decent stage from an AI perspective, too, I think. Herklotz should have this wrapped up, as mostly expected, but I don't think the points jersey will be in play. I hope the KoM jersey won't, either, given the pretty cool battle from the breakaway guys. Vosekalns might not have the legs for it, but Warchol and Formolo both are excellent options.

Good to get Eenkhoorn into the break but it still looks like this is gonna be a super low scoring race for us.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Another quality report Ulrich, really showcasing the exciting stage we saw!
First and foremost, again thank you to Tinkoff and Zara for the chasing efforts.
I think we really gave our best to keep things in check for the GC, but to even make the catch and go for the stage win in the end wasn't expected and not down to our work, gotta be honest about that.
It looks like both of you got something out of that as well, with Sivakov and Wellens gapping most of their Top 5 opponents by quite significant margins.
Again, it's great points and cements Herklotz' legacy, but the time gap is still very much within reach on a bad day or just with one bad decision being made.
The toughest stages on paper are over, but it's exactly that mindset which could prove fatal in the end.
Particularly the penultimate stage up the Bola del Mundo could see drama, with that flat bit in the middle which could sap a lot of energy required for the steep finale if Silvio hits the wind too much out of an abundance of confidence. There are easily minutes in that stage alone if approached wrong.

Nice to see Warchol go for the KoM. Shame he didn't always have the punch to score a lot of points, but glad he's still in the jersey.

The team tries. Can't fault them for that. Vosekalns still in with a shot of the KoM though the competition is fierce. But him, Slagter and Rubio have more opportunities for the breakaway

Just a bad sprint by AKA there. Didn't go too early or too late, just was too far back and never built up speed. Wasn't a horrible race for him because of the stage win, but still well below what we hoped for. That's PCM sprinting though. Not much else to say.
Thanks for the report, and good win for Demare.

A final Herklotz-Demare show
Tomorrow's stage doesn't look challenging enough to cause big changes, but the short length means the climbs are actually harder than they appear.
It's day one of 4 we have to keep breaks in check, I hope everyone's ready to give it their all.

Thank you for the report, UU!
4th place is great by Prasad! Especially as it gives him a very healthy looking lead in the points classification starting the brutal final days in this Vuelta. All men on deck to push him through the mountains inside the time limits
Agree with UU in the report, it really should be Prasad’s jersey to loose now, although, there’s definitely the time limits to worry about. And who knows, maybe even Demare does something crazy on stage 18, with the downhill and flat finish?
For the mountains to come, I only hope we try to put more than 1 guy in the breakaway on each stage. Suspect that’s our only chance to last deep into the final, seeing how we struggled with Van Poucke, Roman and Preidler on the recent mountain stages. |
