UPDATE
PLATINUM Members, we want to inform you that the Russian riders that were transfer listed, are as good as gone; 3 Belarusians left!
Really enjoyed the 2014 team launch Oleg, presentation excellent as always from you, and a great event on the day . We wish you good luck as you step up to the PT challenge.
While we are stopping by, I also wanted to extend thanks to you for the professionalism of your dealings with Grupo Nutresa around transfer season. We are very pleased to welcome Kolobnev as our lead puncheur, and his entourage of Tatarinov and Chernetskiy (loan) will help him quickly settle in. We look forward to their endevours on the road in our colours.

Saint Petersburg, Russia, 20th of March 2014, Tinkoff's Brewery Restaurant
After 25 minutes of promo films and introductions of the sponsors, Vera Viktorovna Galushka opened the press conference. Five men entered the room and sat down behind a huge oak-wood desk, Vera introduced them one by one:
“Russian banking mogul, #1210 Forbes.com, owner of Tinkoff Sport and Tinkoff Credit Systems Bank; General Manager, Oleg Tinkov."
"Owner of Fiat dealerships in Lombardy, Italy; Sports Director, Evgueni Berzin."
"Owner of a 3-star hotel in Cordoba, Spain; Assistant Sports Director, Pavel Tonkov."
"Third season rider Petr Ignatenko and the newest star of the team Yuri Trofimov!"
Tinkov continued; "Finally, thanks to my private and sponsor money, my dream comes true. I have my 100% Russian team at top level, I have two top sport directors and I have the best Russian riders.
100% Russian by coincidence, because early in the tranfer season, Kiryenka (almost at the end of his sport career) told me he wanted to be part of a new Belarussian Cycling Project, so after a meeting with BelarusBank's manager Ste117, Kiryenka (BLR NC TT), Klimiankou (Talent) and Sakalou (BLR NC) were transfered to BelarusBank Pro Cycling."

"Also to make room for our new signings and to make sure our talents can develop themselves at the right level, we had meetings with Kazzinc's manager Pellizotti2 and Ameriabank's manager Selwink, deals were made, Sulimov to Kazzinc Procycling and Foliforov to Team Ameriabank-Novatek."

Tonkov continued; "Now that we are a ProTour team, we can't just rely on our super star Kritskiy anymore and with Kolobnev leaving the team, we of course needed to sign Russia's finest: Yuri Trofimov!
Trofimov: 'The day I signed with Tinkoff was a great day for me and my family and I will say it was actually a day I have been dreaming of for a very long time'. A short Q&A with Trofimov and Ignatenko followed after that which was quite boring. Ignatenko told the press that he wants to ride all 3 Grand Tours, but, of course, that decision is up to management."

At the end of the press conference, Berzin also had some things to say: "At Tinkoff, we, of course, follow (Bela)Russian riders. So for all you lazy-wannabe-twitter-journalists, here's an overview of the 2014 Transfermarket. Now let us drink, budem zdorovy!"
Last year roturn and Smowz predicted Tinkoff 8th and 4th for the 2013 Professional Continental Rankings; We became 1st... So, on to this year's predictions:
Tinkoff won the PCT quite easily last year and it was Timofey Kritskiy won the individual rankings by just over 300 points. He was utterly instrumental in them securing the title last year. He was immensely dominant but now that he has stepped up to the PT... he just looks almost mediocre. There are a number of riders of his skill level or roughly his level and this means that his point scoring ability will be somewhat limited. He will pull in a lot of top 10s and certainly is capable of a top 6 in a GT (maybe not the TDF) but I just can’t see him pulling in a really big win. He would need a race that focuses on climbing and the ITT alone, and even then there are better riders for those races. Sergei Kolesnikov and Aleksij Kunshin are his two biggest helpers in the mountains and both should score a few points of their own but are generally too one-dimensional for that.
Yuri Trofimov on the other hand is anything but one-dimensional. He is primarily a puncheur with a strong sprint but he can climb well enough to make him into a strong stage racer too. Not only that but he can time trial with the best of them – he has showed in GTs in the past that this is a deadly combination and can be used to seize early stages and leader’s jerseys. Certainly he was a great investment and should be the most successful rider on the team. He may suffer somewhat in the Ardennes, however, with EBH and Bakelants both better than him on paper. Not only that but the classics are always a bit of a gamble, so one or two bad races and suddenly he is a big waste of money. He does have a huge depth of punchy talent behind him to help him get to the end, however.
Unfortunately, that is pretty much where I see the point scoring stopping. There is some climbing depth and some depth in puncheurs, as mentioned, but none of these domestiques are going to score a lot in their own right (maybe Kolesnikov could get lucky with his decent sprint stat?). Leonid Krasnov is the best sprinter here and certainly cannot cut it at this level. Dmitri Kozontchuk is the only cobbler here and once again can’t cut it here. Anton Vorobev leads a TTT squad that is only decent if both of the leaders are in it too, and that is just clearly unlikely to happen.
In Summary:
A bit of a two-trick pony and when one of those tricks relies on the gambles of hilly classics, it is a potentially huge problem.
Count’s Call:
I think it will be a tough year for Tinkoff, who didn’t seem to strengthen enough after promotion, and I think they will relegate:
Tinkoff did not lose the most important riders as Kolobnev and Kiryenka both were ageing. That said, they had good value last season. But it`s nothing in comparison to their star transfer. Yuri Trofimov joins the team and directly makes them a greater team as he belongs to the very best in the Man Game. He should be able to take several wins in hilly races or even in more mountaineous. He almost can do everything on any terrain.
Together with Kritskiy they have a very strong point scoring duo. Both might be able to top10 in any GT even though Trofimov most likely will go for the less mountaineous one week races and Kritskiy goes for top5-10 in GT`s.
Kolesnikov, Kunshin, Belkov and Ignatenko will help them a lot and eventually even get the chance to lead a team in some races. Same goes for Rovny, Rybakov and Zakarin. Last unfortunately wasn`t used a lot in the right races, so he stagnated a bit and is not as good as he could have been to replace Kiryenko to 100%.
Time trialing and Cobbles are not the very best races for the team. While first is still decent with some support for the leaders, the cobbles are just for Kozontchuk to eventually get a surprising result.
Sprints also are not the main focus even though the depth is pretty good there and most important quite talented as in 1-2 years they should have quite a few good sprinters. This season it`s all about top10`s here and there.
Something that must be mentioned is the incredible 100% Russian Way. All riders are from Russia and with the abandon of Lukoil the team has some kind of monopol there even though some teams started to focus that area.
So what do we have? One of the very best puncheurs, a pretty good climber and some solid support. Only the point scoring backup in all races without those two is missing a bit. So the team won`t be able to enter the top10. But they could be the strongest of the promoted teams in the end and will finish somewhere between 10-15.
Being the new kid on the block, it was hard to predict how successful our first ProTour races of the season would be. Trofimov was aiming for a podium at Badaling, he finished 6th in a 10 man groupsprint, a decent result. Brutt managed to get 14th overall at Qatar, mainly thanks to intermediate bonus seconds collected at the third stage. In a strong field Ovechkin rode a good time trial in Herbiers; 28th, 3 minutes behind Coppel.
The 3 February Stage Races turned out perfect for Tinkoff: Rovny did alright in Italy (Tirreno); 42nd, Kolesnikov was outstanding in France (Nice); 14th, and two stage wins (2 and 4) and Trofimov secured our first ProTour victory in Spain (Catalunya); 1st GC, 1st Points, and two stage wins (4 and 5), and by winning the General Ranking, Trofimov earned us our first and probably hardest season goal: Win Volta Ciclista a Catalunya!
For the next couple of races we don't expect much, maybe Rovny and Kozontchuk can get a suprising result at Milan San Remo, other than that any points at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, East Midlands Cicle Classic, Rund um Koln and Gent - Wevelgem are all bonus. Our next big race/goal is Vuelta al Pais Vasco!
After a promising start of the season, Tinkoff continued to suprise: Rovny kicked off the spring classic series by finishing 19th during Milano San Remo. For the cobble races we didn't expect much, but Zubov outdone himself by getting in the break of the day during Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and finishing 9th. Kozontchuk did something simular during Gent - Wevelgem, a mid stage attack -> 7th. Kozontchuk however couldn't do much as our leader at the other classics East Midlands Cicle, Rund um Koln, Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris - Roubaix: 35th, 37th, 47th and 66th.
During the cobble classics our focus was on Trofimov to deliver another sponsor goal: Top-3 Vuelta al Pais Vasco, and of course he did, he won the GC without winning a stage! He then continued his already awesome season in the Ardennes -> Trofimov won the Amstel Gold Race, a 3rd place at Fleche Wallone and sprinted to a 2nd place at Liege- Bastogne - Liege (a photo finish was needed to decide who had won the race and we still believe that we won it, not Bakelandts!).
Thanks to Trofimov we now have 3 out of 3 of our sponsor goals. And more good news; next race (Tour of Romandie) will be Kritskiy's first race of the season, it will be a good measurement point to see how Kritskiy came out of the winter/training, and see what needs to be done to get him ready for his Vuelta/Tour double. But first the Giro d'Italia, where Trofimov will be hunting for stages and maybe a Maglia Rossa, Azzurra or Rosa!
Hero of the season Trofimov was our leader during the Giro d'Italia, he won Stage 10, wore the Point, Mountain and Leader jersey for a few days, had numerous podium places and in the end finished 5th overall! Co-Leader Kolesnikov also won a stage; the final mountain stage (Stage 20) solo!
After the Giro d'Italia it was time for Trofimov to take a break and time for Kunshin to ride the Tour of California in preparation of the Vuelta a Espana, he finished 12th in California and continued his good form during the Vuelta a Espana where he won Stage 17 and finishing 17th in GC. Still using his Vuelta form Kunshin also rode the Criterium Dauphine Libere (14th in GC).
So 4 out of 5 sponsor goals this season, but (considering the TDF-crash and the fact that this is our first year in the ProTour) it's 4.9 out of 5 for us, therefore all riders will receive full bonuses this season!
The season is almost done, but we still have some championships to be raced. All of our riders will be riding the Russian National Championships, we hope to get our hands on at least one Russian National Championship Jersey, but history shows that being the dominant team during NC races isn't a guarantee for good results.
Of course we also dream about the Rainbow Jersey and although this year's World Championship route (flat) isn't perfect for our riders, we believe that we have a chance if the race is turned in to an endurance battle. The Russian line-up is of course mostly Tinkoff, but 4 very strong riders will join from other teams; Ignatiev for the Road Race, ITT and TTT / Gusev for both the Road Race and the TTT / Kovalev and Yatsevich for the TTT.
Russia has 3 captains for the road race; Ignatiev, Gusev and Trofimov as leaders / Kritskiy as luxury teammate / Kolesnikov and Kozontchuk for a mid race attack / Brutt and Rovny for the early breakaway.

The last months of the season were (as expected) mediocre; After 8 stages Rovny finished 31st at the Tour of Norway, Trusov was our best sprinter (16th) at the GP Moscow, Kritskiy had a solid ride at the Vuelta a Colombia he finished 12th overall, Belkov was in the BotD and finished 18th at the mountainous GP Liechtenstein,
More mediocre results in September; Kunshin was our leader during the Deutschland Tour 19th overall, Kozontchuk tried to avoid a mass sprint at the Lisbon Classic but was unlucky and finished 20th, after that he also rode the Tour of Northern Europe were he ended 14th overall (not bad).
October was good/better again; the Team Time Trail in Denmark (Copenhagen - Malmo TTT) went quite alright for Tinkoff; 7th (29 seconds behind the winner the Oz Cycling Project), Krasnov couldn't do much during at Praha - Karlovy Vary - Praha no mass sprint -> 50th place for him, Trofimov made sure he won the Individual Protour Rankings during the Tour of Tasmania - he won the hilly second stage, General Ranking and Point jersey, and at the last ProTour race of the season (Giro di Lombardia) Trofimov just missed the podium, he finished 4th in a group sprint - 2 minutes behind good old Cunego.
The World Championships in Hamilton, Canada were quite unlucky for Tinkoff/Russia; Russia finished 2nd in the Team Time Trial (only 2 seconds slower than The Netherlands), Kritskiy rode a really good Individual Time Trial, he finished 6th (54 seconds behind Taylor Phinney) and we still believe Trofimov won the Road Race but he was forced to accept a 2nd place (the Australian Race Commissioner gave 1st place to Matthew Goss, but the finish photo was never released publicly...)
We ended the season on a high though, Sakalou won the Belarussian ITT NC, Kritskiy the Russian ITT NC and Novikov the Russian NC. And last but not least Trofimov won the Rider of the Year Award!
Now that the 2014 racing season is done and over with we, at Tinkoff, are welcoming back our loaned out riders. We would like to thank: BelarusBank Pro Cycling (Ste117) for loaning Sakalou, Grupo Nutresa (Scorchio) for loaning Chernetskiy, Kazzinc Procycling (Pellizotti2) for loaning Sulimov and Team Ameriabank-Novatek (Selwink) for loaning Foliforov.
All riders have learned a lot during this year and had some good results as well, Chernetskiy won the Russian National Championship, Sakalou won the Belarussian National Championship, Foliforov attacked almost every race during the whole season and even became 2nd during the 5th Stage of the Tour de Bretagne and Sulimov had the best result in an HC race; 21th at the Tour of the Battenkill.
Next to our loaned out riders, we also had Vorobev, Zakarin, Korzh, Pomoshnikov, Novikov, Ignatenko and Porsev showing lots of improments. Here are the trainers reports:

Chernetskiy's year report by Scorchio
Spoiler
Sergey was part of the complex deal to bring Kolobnev to the CT, arriving on loan from Tinkoff for 2014. He experienced many race days, and was well liked by both management and his team-mates at Nutresa for his selfless work for the team and boundless enthusiasm for getting into the BoTD. Although none of his breaks hung on to fight for victory, it did assist him in picking up sprint and KoM points in various stage races. This tactic was most successfully demonstrated at the 12-day Middle East Tour, where he managed to secure 2nd overall in the KoM competition, having hung onto the jersey for multiple days until the final summit finishes enabled the GC contenders to close in. Although he had no top 10 stage or overall performances to reward his efforts, he did deliver a useful haul of 28 points to the Nutresa total through his endeavours chasing KoM jerseys. Sergey completed his season with his only point scoring GC result, grabbing 19th on home soil in the hilly 1-day GP Yekaterinburg, backing this up with a fine 5th at the National Championship in Russia. Noteworthy results; 2nd KoM: Tour of the Middle East, 8th KoM and 7th Youth: Tour de Langkawi.
Chernetskiy in the break (again!) valiantly defending his KoM jersey, Stage 7, Tour of the Middle East
Sergey has already returned home to his base in Russia and comrades at the power-house Tinkoff PT team. With all that he has learned in the past season in the CT, he is well placed to take up a roster position with his parent team, or to step into a PCT loan to continue to maximise his development potential. Sergey will be a much missed figure when Nutresa rolls put in 2015. We fully expect to be reading bout and witnessing his cycle racing exploits throughout the next decade.
Trofimov with 9,5 millions in wage? I know that Oleg Tinkov is managerial magician, but this is too much!.
I am longtime fan of your team and provisional squad for 2015 looks great, it will be a pleasure to meet you in the PT.

Wow, getting Trofimov down to 950 is some serious negotiating. Don't want to know what he would've gone for on this year's FA market. You've got a knack for choosing just the right goals. You were so unlucky not to get 5/5 there with Kritskiy having some bad luck. Nonetheless, I look forward to seeing what magic you've worked this transfer season.
