So many KOM points at stake, and then we don't bother to send a rider in the break. Instead Cataldo managed to lose more than 3 minutes while Vuillermoz was safe in the front group. I don't quite get it...
Sicard is doing amazing in these kind of stages with his attacking nature. Obviously it can also end up killing him at one point, but he's getting a HUGE amount of points he shouldn't usually be getting.
Lecuisinier in 4th is pretty good, although I need him to start collecting better points soon...

OK, Phinney has switched on beast mode and might be hard to beat in this great shape!
Nice to see Sicard attacking once again, the Frenchies love that
Too bad for Brenes to miss out on the stage win - but there will be other chances for sure!

We were in a difficult spot there. By reeling Sicard back in we provided the perfect leadout for Phinney and eventually losing time to both is far from ideal.
But I guess the alternative would've been to lose way more time to just Sicard, so I'm also glad we had the team strength to form a train in that finale.
These punchy stages were always going to be a slight liability for Madrazo, so I guess we should be content that the damage was contained to just bonus seconds.
Congrats tasta

Sicard is really impressive on these hilly stages, but luckily Phinney just managed to time it correctly. I'll have to thanks Gazelle also for keeping Sicard close, otherwise we would probably have lost the jersey.
After a so-so start, Phinney has been really good the last stages. Fingers crossed that he can keep that up. Thanks for another thrilling report, Cunego!

Pretty disappointed at that stage. Lost the KoM jerseys without attempting to defend it on a stage with so many points available and Lopez rides very annonymous, not using his terrain to climb in GC with Arndt being the only one to lose a bit of time on him and doesnt get any stage points either :/

Velits being safe there, but quite disturbing that he once again was isolated.
Dekker should be with him instead of 2min behind.
Also Boom/Koep/Paillot could be better placed sometimes.
Hopefully not costing too much energy for Velits. |

I'm not sure what to say about sending Walsleben up the road on such a stage
Hopefully we'll try to think about who the stage might suit for moving forward when we decide who we want up the road
Phinney seems to be on a roll. Congratulations, tastasol! If it comes down to a sprint on stage 9, Demare must be worried what the American can do there too, eventhough that stage looks easier than this one in general. |

Really enjoyed following the 1st week of racing at the Grand Boucle, good racing, and great reporting by cunego59 - good job sir!
Shame to see Vesuvio legend Schleck get hit hard by a puncture in terms of GC, but sure he will claw his way back up the standings and perhaps frees him up for a tilt at a stage or two in the 2nd and 3rd week. The GC remains pretty wide open for the moment which is obviously good for the neutral spectator. Demare, Sicard and Phinney have been the obvious stand-outs gaining most during week 1, lets see who steps up to challenge them going forward .

Disaster avoided for Dombrowski there but the teams classification will remain a dream, it seems.

Sicard on fire recently. Someone should go for a doping test I guess.
Woah... I’ll get you fired for crazy accusations like that.
To everyone else, I appreciate the compliments. Great start by Sicard and the team, although it would’ve been nice to have kept the jersey for longer.
Sicard’s probably not a candidate for the overall win, but so far, so good.
Appreciate the great reports. |

Nice to see Boom finally attempting it and being in the stronger half of the break. But with no teammates around it was obvious, others would be stronger in the end.
Velits as well with the favourites is good but again annoying Dekker wasn`t with him and again dropped earlier, which is weird to see him being dropped day for day.
Let`s hope this will be different in the real mountain stages, when his support is needed a lot more.
Congrats to EA Vesuvio for yet another successful break win this season and thanks for the report! |

Thought it would be an easy day with such a big group getting away, but Sicard just loves to attack. Looked like Phinney took it quite easy, but a pity to have both Stake Laengen and Nesset behind the split and therefore losing time in the teams classification. With the favourites together, it was still a good day for Phinney and not a great score for Demaré either in the fight for the green jersey.
Congrats to EA on the win! We enjoyed having the attacking spirit of Smit in our team previously, so nice to see him getting a huge win.

Good stuff to be in the break, not the best of outcomes though given our quality up there. Still a solid result.

Not really the perfect stage for Ioannidis, when having riders such as Vuillermoz and Cataldo that could have fought for atleast stage podium...
Oh well, atleast we were in the break.
Lecuisinier really not very attentive so far - He usually performs much better. I can only hope that all those attacks and energy efforts from Sicard etc. will cause them to break at some point, although I doubt that is how the game works. Lecuisinier can't have spent much effort so far in the race - although it may cost him a bit that neither Vuillermoz or Cataldo made it to the line in the front group...
The upcoming stage should be for Demare surely, unless the breakaway takes another one.
Stauff surely can't be in contention, but hopefully he can save a bit of energy for a stage 11 go... Vlatos just needs to do whatever he can to survive until the TT, but seeing how poorly he performs on stages like today I can't see him survive stage 12. Only chance is the long flat part before the mountains where he hopefully isn't dropped, and then for the stage to be fairly slowly ridden in the final part.

Argh, terrible stage. Noone in the break at all, no attempts to get back into the KoM race, controlling the pace without getting close enough to catch them back and then not getting any gaps on any other top 20 riders. This is simply terrible.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Brenes loses out twice like that, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Fresh prince winning though is good. Brenes and Konig being so active in gt breaks has been great for us. Hopefully Brenes can keep the KOM assault

Entirely expected, still very sad.
There must be bunch finishes the next two days, and we must win at least one of them.
