Update on the other riders:
Barguil: broken wrist and knee pains
Walscheid: possible broken Tibia and broken hand
Sinkeldam and Ludvigsson: no serious injuries
Haga: Transported away by helicopter and underwent surgery for neck injury, condition stable.
Edit 1: Søren Kragh Andersen was the only rider able to evade the car.
Edit 2: Haga also appears to have a broken hip.

I read a report that the driver was on vacation from britain and was driving on the wrong side of the road, came to a corner and before there was even time to hit the brakes, collided with the Giant cyclists, so it wasn't exactly a lack of respect for cyclists specifically that caused this accident, but still an avoidable accident, so its unfortunate to happen.

Degenkolb's finger is quite worring. Walscheid's season is already pretty much over until June, and Haga's condition is still uncertain. |

Apparently Gaviria's injury is not as bad as it seemed before. He will be out for 3 weeks only and should be also able to take part to the Track WCs.

It was some old British lady driving the car in the Shimano crash, she's been released from police custody but charged with reckless driving after going on the wrong side of the road. I get the eyesight problems point and all, but most worryingly she apparently spends ~6 months in England and then in Spain each year.

But seriously, stupid accident and it's not nice to see seasons wrecked in such a way. It's one of the peculiarities of cycling that training accidents can be so serious and so season affecting. It's not the first time and guaranteed it won't be the last time either.

750,000 Brits might live in Spain but I'd say nearly 90% of them don't speak Spanish, Brits are crap at foreign languages.
As for the accident it's horrific and again caused by a car, horrible to see all these riders badly injured, especially Degenkolb as he's a big rider that will be forced to miss the classics and was a sure bet to take at least one of the first three monuments. Any news on how long he'll be out? |

Not decided yet. Milan San Remo is still not impossible but very unlikely according to them. And even if he is back on his bike in time, chances to perform well there are probably close to zero. Which should be the same for the cobbled classics.
Btw. you should check Chad Haga`s twitter of today. This guy is absolutely great. Making jokes all day while being in the hospital. So luckily he seems to do better already. |

Way too many riders get injured due to car drivers. In social media car drivers are looking like hateful douchebags when its about cycling on the road. They are in rage about cyclists but we are always the victims. Cyclists need more protection and tougher sentences against car drivers.

So Degenkolb's classics campaign looks in ruins, it seems like every year we lose big riders due to stupid accidents. I can kind of accept it in a race but when it happens in a freak crash like this one ........... well it's harder to accept.
Cars/bikes in general have become the nemesis of cycling in recent years, impossible to run an event without them and if the vehicles stay too far away from the riders you get poorer pictures so you can't win.
Personally I think the drivers of the vehicles need to be better selected and have better awareness of what's going on around them. It must be pretty demanding driving a vehicle for all those hours each day, so there's probably a health and safety issue here, especially given the terrain that they sometimes have to drive over and the amount of potential accidents that are always waiting to happen.
The other issue of too many riders in a race is another problem and the constant pushing to get riders into position at the start of key climbs and key points of the race also adds to the problem.
Back in the day, selections were made much earlier in races and this created less stress points for riders and vehicles in races in general.
The current issue of cars and bikes is a product of modern cycling. |

Old lady getting confused and riding on the wrong side of the road is just a freak accident, I think we're looking for too much in this tragedy. The same goes for the Goddaert crash - god bless his soul - it was a steering fault from him that led to the accident, we can't blame car drivers for everything.
Then of course we had too many incidents with collisions in race by official cars/motos, that's huge disgrace. These are supposed to be experienced professionals but yeah..
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.
