Welcome to our first monument of the season with ofcourse Milano San Remo. We are looking for a successor to Caleb Ewan (ISA-Hexacta). The Australian isn't here to defend his title as ISA relegated from PT and they didn't get/took a wildcard.
The same can be said for runner-up Bryan Coquard, this year active for PCT's Manada Coyote. So the guy with the last podium spot, Fernando Gaviria (Moser - Sygic), is the favourite for this 2024 edition. Gaviria warmed up in Qatar, where he got a stage and GC win and a bunch of fine results finishing 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th in the other stages.
One of the challengers is Dylan Groenewegen who moved from Fastned to Aker - MOT in the offseason. He didn't perform in Qatar as he would like, but he atleast got a stage win in Paris-Nice. Salem Kemboi (Lidl Cycling) took off with a podium spot in the Tour of Tasmania's flat stage, but didn't deliver big since. Alberto Dainese (Assa Abloy) is another one who didn't got the confidence that he needed from his preparation, in the Tour of Qatar. Although who knows with all Italian tifosi behind him? Norwegian Kristoffer Halvorsen traded DK Zalgiris for Oxxo - Frisby. He landed fifth in Tour of Qatar GC in his first outing. Then we reach our first PCT contender with Stanislaw Aniolkowski (Team Popo4Ever p/b Morshynska).
His manager will be delighted so far with wins (in Tour of Qatar and Tirreno-Adriatico) that early in the season. Fabio Jakobsen (ZARA - Irizar) ends our list of challengers. The Dutchman was consistent in Tour of Qatar which resulted in 4th overall.
Then we have a bunch of outsiders which start with Kaden Groves (Jura GIANTS). He got a fourth place in a Qatar sprint, but most of his results in Qatar and Tirreno were disappointing so far.
On the other hand we have Eduard Grosu (Rabobank) who finished 10th last year in MSR. The Romanian started the season on a high with a stage win and 2nd in GC in Qatar.
Jasper Philipsen (Polar) is another one who performed well last edition (6th). His performances aren't as promising this season, already finishing 4 times out of the top 15.
Max Kanter (Team Puma - SAP) had his consistency on par in 2024: he got four top 10's in five Qatar sprints.
We finish our preview with honourable mentions for Gabriel Cullaigh (9th in two Qatar sprints), Mads Pedersen, Artem Samolenkov (8th in Qatar GC), Arnaud Demare (5th last year), Matti Manninen (6th in Qatar GC) and Alexandr Ovsyannikov.

The list of puncheurs present looks almost as stacked as in any PT classic
Gidich, Mohoric, Gesbert, Aranburu, Lutsenko, Vansevenant, Higuita to name a few - obviously many other teams took the same approach as we did when sending Schmid in addition to our sprinter Groves.
And as much as I appreciate the preview (thanks to Laurens), I think looking at the winner list makes it clear that it's not really enough to only look at sprinters here. Many scenarios are possible - and in particular with how aggressive the young puncheurs have been so far this year (Vansevenant, Pidcock, partly Schmid) I wouldn't be surprised at all to not see a bunch sprint.
But we'll see - hopefully we'll do well either way Top 10 would be great for us, and Groves' good punch will hopefully help him get the right position for once. And I wouldn't mind Schmid going for it, either
Good luck to all!

Monument time!
Obviously a huge race for us. Decided to send Groenewegen here in the end, after his good performance last year. Though, having seen how Qatar went, I fear for our leadout, as it's the same leadout here. If it comes down to a sprint, I really hope the short distance from finishing the descent of Poggio to the finish line can play in our favour, if we manage to put lots of riders near the front in a train.
If we get a completely different scenario, I hope Kragh, Peak and Anderberg all have license to follow attacks or even start the attacks, as they should be very capable on such a course.
Super excited to see how this one plays out! Definitely hopeful of a great race result wise, especially seeing Groenewegen's brilliancy in Paris-Nice, but this is admittedly quite a different game. |

I didnt really enjoy the last couple of editions with a lack of action on the Poggio, hopefully we see a more active race this year again. Would love to see someone like Pidcock come out on top!
From an Evonik POV, there is no real leader here but we have a few mediocre cards to play. Kurianov probably the best one of them as a rouleur/sprinter but also Blums could get a decent result. And with decent i have to admit that a top 20 finish is good enough for us in a race like this.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

It's nice to look back at the historic podiums - heavy Italian presence in those early seasons!
With Van der Lijke have always hoped for a reduced sprint, but he doesn't even get to feature in a sprint focused preview, so perhaps need to hope it shifts the other way towards Mohoric - but would need even more luck for that to come off.

Sprinters win here, but our sprinters have not done well here before. AKA's hill is disqualifying, so we sent Walls this time, who is likely too slow against this competition and isn't even a good climber himself. We also sent Aranburu since he has two race days left, and Per as our fighter attacker. Kind of just slinging stuff at the wall and oping it sticks. I doubt any of them can finish top 20, but we'll hope to not be completely forgotten and soak up some points because losing out completely on monument scoring would not be good.
Thanks for the preview!

Thank you for the nice preview, Laurens
In recent history indeed mostly sprinters and rouleurs did well here. We were happy with Manninen being 7th in 2022 and would be very happy if Halvorsen could repeat that, but I'd rate riders like Manninen and Groves etc. a bit higher due to better mtn/hill and physicals. Top-10 with Halvorsen or rouleur Ruiz would be more than fine. Higuita indeed also here just in case, but if a puncher is actually successfull I'd assume it would be a pidcock/schmid type

Its a race where we have always seemed to struggle I feel even when we have had the likes of Bellis and Yates race here in previous editions so we've committed to choosing a pure sprinter as leader option and I really hope that will give us a decent result here.
Would be nice to get a monument win but beating Grosu or Gaviria seems unlikely. Good luck everyone!

Can Pedersen strike "back"? Hoping that he can, and for some attacks over the last hills. Let's go!

I have to root for Demare here. He's had the worst luck all season and I really hope that he can find his form. Otherwise, Pidcock might be my outside pick for the day.
Would love to see Vermaerke make the breakaway in his first monument experience. Always love to see my Turtles on loan getting to race the coolest races on the planet.

Really hoping Jakobsen can live up to his tag as one of the favourites to finish in the Top 5 but cautious that there are a lot of quality sprinters here. Cosnefroy may find the opportunity for a late attack while we don't have much in the form of Puncheurs. Interesting to see how this one plays out!

I have a few options here. Hsu should be able to handle Cipressa and Poggio better than most sprinters. For Quita and his combination of strong flat, hill and sprint stat the profile suits very well. And of course Gidich is here in case it gets selective. I hope I we can place these three riders in the top 30, with one of them maybe aiming a bit higher! Thanks for the preview! |

Very entertaining edition and i'm super happy for jandal to see Pidcock winning. Big middle finger for all the haters who thought jandal had ruined him with the development choices
Skujins on the podium is also very lovely to see. Cool to see that PCM can still create this sort of scenario here
Evonik gets almost nothing out of this. 3 top 50 finishes is at least a tiny bit more than a minimum score. Still, we had bad positioning all the way through the race which is something i really dont like to see. At least we finally joined the break.
Spoiler Thanks for the report. Was a pretty good one but ideally make it slightly more obvious that the break gets caught when group Konychev attacks before the Cipressa. Confused me for a bit when the gaps were given since the break was still visibly ahead on the attack picture.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Literally couldn't have gone worse. Could tell very early on that our team just wasn't competing here in any way. Lots of puncheurs near the front, but Aranburu's in 111th. Catastrophic result in the race category with the most depth scoring available.

Poor. With results like this in races we really need to score well my team is in a huge risk to go down this year.
Thanks for the report, Imladrik and congrats to jandal.

Sure, get top 10s in monuments and win stages in PT races whilst absolutely doing nothing in races we can actually score points... At this moment I'm convinced I would stay up as a PT team whilst going down in PCT... Wonderful..

Well done by Groenewegen to be in contention and fight for the podium. Looking at the screenshots, he looks to have come from far behind too. Must admit I’m also disappointed we didn’t put several riders near the front of the main group, as Kragh, Peak, Anderberg and even Veyhe should all be capable on such a course, but looked like we weren’t favoured by the AI. And seeing what kind of riders AI put near the front of the main group, it was definitely a mistake to not bring Valter. We take notes for next year!
Big congratulations to jandal! What a win and way to do it that was That surely must be what trademark Pidcock will look like in a couple of seasons. Taking advantage of undulating terrain and being to difficult to catch/beat when in contention for the win… |
