Classica San Sebastian - Discussions
Imladrik
The PT peloton is back in the basque county for the Classica San Sebastian! Same route as last season, that is, nearly 210 km of the caracteristic hills of the area.

Except Simone Ponzi the two last seasons, and Valverde in the early 2010’s nobody ever won the race twice. Some returning winners will want to join him in this palmares.

Last season, the race was won by a sprint of a select group. To win, one will need strong physical abilities in the hills, as well as a good kick to the finish line.

Former winners pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Yates are back to take a prestigious win and make it in the favorite list. The former will have to do better than last year though…

But we have an obvious favorite, in the name of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez. He’s the best puncheur and climber here, and has a the kick needed to win on the line, though his team isn’t that strong.

The PCT teams also have their chances here, particularly Colombini with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Kelderman who was disappointing last season, coming only 22nd.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gesbert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Moscon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png Boswell are in this category.

But behind Lopez, Kinoshita, Kelderman, Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy.

Top 10 for Moscon would be perfect, lack of sprint porbably eliminates him from top contention no matter how good of a day hell have

I know I shouldn't hope for anything with Kinoshita, but it would be nice if we got a somewhat decent result

Fingers crossed Kelderman finally shows his price was worth it.

Its a hilly classic and Lopez is here so i obviously have high expectations. The remark about a bad support is warranted since I couldn't even send Blums here due to a lack of RDs

We obviously don't have one of the race's top favourites here. But especially Quita's result, and also the likes of Malecki, Gaudu or Narvaez finishing inside the Top 20 last year gives me some hope that Errazkin or Schmid could finish similarly strong. 20 points - equivalent to a Top 15 - is our goal, but after the surprisingly good Deutschland outcome any points here basically are a bonus.

Will be interesting to see if the pure puncheurs - i.e. sub-70 Mo - will continue to struggle; with all of that climbing before the last hill, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of them out of contention...

My money would be on Yates to win the race from a reduced bunch sprint, but I'm looking forward to compete with all these big guns anyway Smile

Good luck to all, thanks for the preview!

Luis Leon Sanchez
Could really do with a big performance from Borges here! He's got the acceleration to make the difference in the finale if he can stick with the other top favourites. Alternatively, if climbing does have a big impact, then Mas may be able to put out a big performance of his own!

Thank you for the preview and looking forward to this one Wink

Probably not the best use of 2 Eastman days but if it's very selective he might be able to finish in a small front group

Thanks for the preview and good luck all

This is a free hit for us. Most importantly the young riders get some exp. If anyone breaks into the top 20-30 then great, but I feel like I should have used up my fair share of luck by now.

Thanks for the preview.

Needing a good result for the promotion fight vs. Not making the favorites list in the preview.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Yates should be a decent favourite, Lopez may well be the top fav but it depends on if it finishes in a small bunch finish like last year. We bring a decent team here I feel so Yates will be well supported, a top 10 is a must but more would be a very welcome occurrence for us to get over the disappointment of the most recent races in Slovenia and Deutschland.

Yeah that simply was not good enough. Wasnt sure if this is the best race for Lopez but losing points to Valter and Madouas is really not that good.

Just ignore those PCT teams and we won Pfft

Probably best result of Kinoshita this season and can't fault him for not winning. Congrats Gustavovskiy!

Mauro!!! What a ride, what a result!
I was secretly (well, not really, given my frequent comparisons with Meurisse) hoping for an overperformance like this, but to really see it happen is just amazing! Even more so given that it was a PTHC race, the biggest possible (scoring) stage for a PCT rider!

I was pretty positive that this race should suit him: quite some climbing, but not too much, plus a finish after a downhilll and a short flat. I'd say he did perfectly play out his strengths - and obviously he was on a stellar day, keeping up with the guys he did, and even repeated attacking. He was probably the best suited rider for this kind of finale in the front group, with his combo of climbing, downhill and sprinting - not using as much energy as e.g. Yates on the longer climbs and in the downhill, and then just sprinting a tad faster than Kinoshita and the others.

Well, this surely is a career milestone for young Mauro, just like 2nd place in Avenir last year and 4th in Viana this year. And - looking at previous results this year - makes me wonder whether a more sprint-focused development plan would actually be the right pick for him...
But for now, we just enjoy another completely surreal result this month - that's more than 400 points scored already in August, including our first ever PTHC classic podium by a homegrown (and not yet fully developed) rider, just insane what's currently going on...

Huge congrats obviously to DuckDuckGo - I actually thought Stannard would like this race as well, but they Arndt apparently had even better legs! Decent result as well for Wilco, being the 3rd best PCT finisher here!
Also nice to see the Minions do well - survival will still be difficult to achieve, but it's a sign of life at least!
And as knockout wrote, probably not the best suited race for the top puncheurs/hybrids with a somewhat lower sprint skill, but your next chance will surely come soon Smile

Thanks for the report, enjoyed it for obvious reasons Wink

Moscon is having a season to forget thats for sure. Two in top 25 is fine I guess

Clearly the Boswell rider type's time has passed as he once again takes a back seat to the young guys who can sprint. Narvaez 12th at this level is a great outcome and Bagioli chips in as well.

Thanks for the report, I assume it was raining, the haze in all the screenshots gave it kind of an epic feel.
